Why did they call it the Genesis in USA if it was Sega's

Because the name Mega Drive was already taken.
Also it was their third console after the Mark 3 and the SG-1000.

The motherboards call them M3 and M4, and Genesis is M5. Whatever way you spin it, Megadrive was called internally as Mark V, while the SMS was Mark IV.

The Mark III is not just a revision of the SG-1000, it's actually more advanced than the original SG-1000 and the SG-1000 Mark II. You have to keep in mind that companies didn't have console generations quite figured out yet back then.
