Here's my way of doing things:

I got an original PS1, and dug out all my old games I still had (only like 6 of them). After that, I wrote out a long ass list of all the games I wanted to buy, and started on the cheap ones. Like $50 worth of cheapies at a time. Next year's tax refund (which should be like $7K) will be at least partially spent on all the pricier games I want, all at once. Like $1000 at a time, maybe 2.
In this way, by maybe 2018, I intend on completing my perfect 200 game PS1 collection. And I don't just want them to have them either. I'm beating them as I buy them weekly, and intend on at least trying to do the same with the larger buying binges.

And yes, the ps1 has 200 games that I actually want to own and enjoy playing. N64fags can just stfu before they even start with their shit.

Yeah basically when I started collecting it was mostly for my youtube channel and later streaming.

My idea was that I'd buy a game, then I'd beat it on stream maybe a few times, then I'd raffle it off to my subscribers/followers

Obviously once I saw the prices that went out the window pretty quick.

I decided I wanted to focus on PS1, then after awhile of PS1 I got out my old SNES, N64, GC, PS2, etc and started buying for those again. I had a sizable collection before.

Right now I'm into arcade stuff. It's actually really interesting and fun to learn about how the different boards are wired and it's gotten me to actually learn about circuitry and develop some skills besides just playing games.

I think Arcade stuff has a barrier to entry for sure. It can be really intimidating.

But at the same time, it's never been more accessible. Everyone thinks you need a cabinet but you really don't.

You can get a SuperGun from Windygaming riht now for 250, it's a preorder atm. Which is wired for standard jamma and has a CPS2 kick harness.

There are also those chink Pandora's boxes that are essentially just arcade board flash carts that wire into standard jamma.

There are a lot of games that are "standard jamma" but require kick harnesses for additional buttons like Tekken and what not, but if you're a bit clever you can sometimes just add jumpers to to the jamma connector and get the additional buttons with out the kick harness. Obviously thats for only a few games that have one or two extra buttons, you'd definitely need a kick harness for stuff like Capcom Fighters, or if you just straight up get more characters like in Turtles or Sunset Riders.

Theres a lot of cool things and they're actually deceptively simple. They just have the illusion of being challenging. I'm going to make some arcade sticks for the supergun I'm getting in a couple months so that should be a fun experience as well.
