It's actually Mega Drive, two words, but yeah, it was because of trademark issues. It's not like Sega didn't want to keep the name in North America.

Also, it's not like Nintendo was exempt from the changing the names of their consoles outside Japan, seeing how the NES was originally the Famicom and thus, the Super Famicom became the Super NES. Hell, I wish they would bring back this practice of changing console names, seeing how retarded the Wii U and New Nintendo 3DS names were.
