Also you can now get programs like oblige to generate levels for you, so you dont even need to download anything if you just want something random to play through. They're still randomly generated so have their ups and downs.

Very true, it includes every WAD I ever released. I'm not sure if you're (OP) trying to be Doom's Werner Herzog or something, but I don't think much is to be gained from playing every throwaway goof level made by a bored 14 year old over summer break.

I've been dooming for more than 20 years, and still can't believe the astounding quality content produced by the community. Year after year, month after month, there's releases almost every week!

Once I tried to make my own collection with the best of the best of the best. I gave up after 500 wads/megawads.

Trust me on this, there's so much top quality wads to last you for years, no need to check mediocre content(anything below 6/10).

Find an FTP mirror and recursively download the directory you want (in a graphical client like Windows Explorer, a drag and drop should do it) and learn the true meaning of regret. Because you're gonna run out of space, you jig?

You have to set your clock to the 30'th of October (so it ticks over at midnight) for that to work.

You guys overestimate the size of all this. I did a download of most of the Doom stuff on idgames (mainly level wads for Doom and Doom II and a few other things like graphics and music) not too long ago and it ended up being around 16GB.

Download Filezilla:

Once installed, click on File>Site Manager and click New Site. Put ftp.fu-berlin.de (or ftp.gamers.org) under Host. Then click Connect.

What should be showing on the main window is the Local Site (your computer) file listing to the left and the Remote Site (FTP server) file listing to the right. If you used ftp.fu-berlin.de, double-click the pc folder, then the games folder in the right window. You should now see the idgames folder. Double-click it and take whatever you want. The level wads for Doom and Doom II, among other Doom engine games, are in the levels folder.

Also, under Edit>Settings, if you change the File Exists Action for Downloads to "Overwrite if size differs or source is newer" and if you turn "Preserve timestamps of transferred files" on in the Transfer menu, this will make updating your collection faster and easier after the initial mass download.
