Japanese or English audio? Which do you think is the definitive way to play the game?

While I'm sure Japanese is the superior version my nostalgia refuses me to accept a version of Shenmue in my life without the hilarious English dub.

Suzuki actually liked the English dub so much that he released the English version of the game in Japan. If the original creator prefers the English dub, why don't you?
>>
Depends.
I like the voices in english more, even though the acting is not much.
That awkward Ryo is part of the fun.
But for the sake of continuity, the japanese voices are better. I remember playing Shenmue 2 and having to adjust to the japanese voices.
>>
>>3398427
The Xbox version of 2 has English voices.
>>
The cheesy amateurish voice acting is somehow fitting if you grew up watching cheesy english anime dubs from the late 80s and 90s. Considering the time period the game is set on, it somehow seems very fitting, though obviously unintentional.
Just like if you're going to watch a cheesy 70s kung fu movie you justa gotta listen to those retarded hong kong dubs.
>>
You know I've never actually played this game
>>
I always got a kick out of how NPCs would pronounce Ryo's name so wildly different, just based off of how comfortable the VA was with Japanese pronunciation. You'd get Ryo with a hard R, Lyo with a hard L, a slightly rolled R, and even a few that sounded more like Leo, Theo, or Dio.
>>
I hope Shenmue III keeps Ryo as autistic as he was in the first games.

it'll probably have much better acting given that it's now the 2010's and we have certain expectations about that.

Maybe it will go modern anime VA style and have the same 5 people that are in every show.

Why would the Japaneses care about a foreign dubbed version of a game set in their own country? It's not like MGS Integral, where having the game dubbed in English actually made sense.

Japanese. The dub is unlistenable. Anyone defending it is retarded. There's no "cheesy" ironic quality to it, it's just bad. The game takes itself seriously to a point where you need decent VAs to experience it properly.

>cheezy 70's movie vibe

Where is everyone getting this meme that Shenmue is intended to be some cornball kung fu movie experience? If you play the game at all you can tell it wants you to take it very seriously, at least in the Japanese version. The English sounds "corny" because it's a legitimately bad dub. As in, the people producing it didn't know what the fuck they were doing because the game's development was a clusterfuck and Yu Suzuki wanted absolute control over every aspect of its production, including how the game would be presented in English, despite not knowing English himself.
>>
>>3398410
elevens barely have any understanding of the english language - so stop pretending one eleven 'liking' a dub makes it good
>>
>>3398410
>Suzuki actually liked the English dub so much

People who translated Shenmue confirmed Suzuki like most Japs barely knows any English. That doesn't sound like an endorsement for the shitty dub.

What is comedic charm? If your autism occludes you from finding any charm or comedic value from bad dubs (see RE1 and House of the Dead 2) in your super srs medium, then I pity you.

>>3405958

And I've said before, not an excuse because it isn't a comedic game. Shenmue wants to be a giant sprawling epic, not a brain dead light gun game like HotD or an exploitative zombie flick like RE. I'm sorry, but you sound like a retard who thinks actively paying attention is being autistic. Go talk to your doctor.

I didn't say they were bad, but they're games that aren't meant to be taken seriously from story point of view

>And it's not some super serious existential drama that you make it out to be.
You really are retarded, because I didn't that it was like that. Shenmue isn't existential pretentious Envangelion bullshit. What it is a sprawling epic with minute details including having shit like voices for every single character, primarily for the sake of immersion and world building. Fuck, the first game is subtitled CHAPTER ONE: YOKOSUKA, as in it's the first chapter in what was intended to be a lengthy series of games, all starting with some no-name town in Japan and then by the second game the story expands into the big ass city of Hong Kong and beyond.

Point is, Yu Suzuki wanted Shenmue to grow into this big epic adventure while keeping every single detail into account at the same time. Voices are part of that, and having shitty acting in that important facet is a flaw.

>not playing the subbed version is tantamount to illiteracy or a short attention span.
So what other excuse do you for enjoying shitty acting? Are you blind and need audio so you need to hear the whole game? That's understandable I guess,

>>3406856
>it's pure camp
Yeah, the dub is pure shitty le ironic xd im so cool camp. Thankfully I'm not a fag who uses that tired excuse when it's obvious something is shit.

>>3406739
>s-s-s-sperglord heh i showed him!
Adorable
>>
>>3407283
>and having shitty acting in that important facet is a flaw.

In your opinion. I think the bad dub (unintentionally) adds a charm to the game and elevates it to an almost Kung Pow-like farce. Some people like it, and some people don't. Guess we'll just have to agree to disagree. I apologize for any insults, by the way.
>>
>>3404216
You're an idiot if you think appreciation of cheesy dialogue is "ironic". Don't be that fat fuck who berates his friends for not taking video games seriously.
>>
>>3407283
It doesn't matter if the low quality of Shenmue's voice acting is an objective flaw or not. Many people still find value in the comedic qualities that it entails. I think it makes the game infinitely more interesting to play. Realistic voice acting often comes across as dull, especially when applied to the often mediocre writing of video game dialogue.

It's not a matter of right or wrong to enjoy specific aspects of video games. Ironically, it is wrong to assume that humans can't appreciate awkward voice acting. Yu Suzuki's personal vision is completely irrelevant in that context.
>>
>>3407418
To each his own then

>>3407629
>Realistic voice acting often comes across as dull
Funny, because one the reasons why the Shenmue's dub eats raw ass is because half the characters sound dull. Nozomi, Mark, you name it, some of the characters barely emote.

Yeah, alright. I asked a stupid question there. What is confusing me about that post is this:

What I really should be asking is what is wrong with the DC version that makes this guy only phrase it only as an exception instead of just saying
>Yes, thing exists.
Obviously there must be a problem or he wouldn't have phrased it that way.

Shenmue 2 came late enough in the dreamcasts life cycle that Sega felt there was no point in porting it to the US due to lack of dreamcast sales. Sega used that as an opportunity and in seeking better relations with Microsoft gave Microsoft the exclusive NA rights for the game to make an XBOX port. This version of the game only had the English Dub.

That game is a tragedy, and one of the worst humanity has ever suffered. But it is NOT as bad as Shenmue.
>>
>>3404216
That's cool, but even if shenmue with the original voice tracks was the greatest thing I'd ever experience I'm not going to spend the next several years becoming fluent in Japanese to experience it. I could use subtitles, but that kind of defeats the purpose. I could put any voice track in Japanese and not be able to tell a difference.
