I like the voices in english more, even though the acting is not much.
That awkward Ryo is part of the fun.
But for the sake of continuity, the japanese voices are better. I remember playing Shenmue 2 and having to adjust to the japanese voices.

The cheesy amateurish voice acting is somehow fitting if you grew up watching cheesy english anime dubs from the late 80s and 90s. Considering the time period the game is set on, it somehow seems very fitting, though obviously unintentional.

I always got a kick out of how NPCs would pronounce Ryo's name so wildly different, just based off of how comfortable the VA was with Japanese pronunciation. You'd get Ryo with a hard R, Lyo with a hard L, a slightly rolled R, and even a few that sounded more like Leo, Theo, or Dio.

I hope Shenmue III keeps Ryo as autistic as he was in the first games.

Where is everyone getting this meme that Shenmue is intended to be some cornball kung fu movie experience? If you play the game at all you can tell it wants you to take it very seriously, at least in the Japanese version. The English sounds "corny" because it's a legitimately bad dub. As in, the people producing it didn't know what the fuck they were doing because the game's development was a clusterfuck and Yu Suzuki wanted absolute control over every aspect of its production, including how the game would be presented in English, despite not knowing English himself.

What it is a sprawling epic with minute details including having shit like voices for every single character, primarily for the sake of immersion and world building. Fuck, the first game is subtitled CHAPTER ONE: YOKOSUKA, as in it's the first chapter in what was intended to be a lengthy series of games, all starting with some no-name town in Japan and then by the second game the story expands into the big ass city of Hong Kong and beyond.

Point is, Yu Suzuki wanted Shenmue to grow into this big epic adventure while keeping every single detail into account at the same time. Voices are part of that, and having shitty acting in that important facet is a flaw.
