So the latest version (3.6) was released last December, but NetHack is still retro, right?
Can we have a thread dedicated to how great this game is?
Everybody I know refuses to play this game. They dismiss it as too difficult, or claim it has shitty graphics (even with tilesets).

Time to rob this store blind.
Nethack is an alright game, but it's archaic for archaic's sake. Dungeon Crawl Stone Soup is a much better iteration of the roguelike genre.
I used to play Nethack, and loved Castle of the Winds as a kid, but it just isn't as good now that we have better alternatives.

Stole a bunch of spellbooks from the shop. As I was reading them, my kitten started fighting a gnome lord and got itself killed. Charmed the gnome lord and made him my new slave.
>>3397481
Stone Soup is good, too. I also like Linley's Dungeon Crawl, especially since Stone Soup doesn't run well on old machines.
>>3397489
>>3397491
Nearly everything I stole from the store.
>>3397503
BUC-identified my shit on the altar, and sacrificed enough corpses to get Magicbane.
So far, so good.
>>3397517
Found the entrance to the Gnomish Mines, but first...
Gnome Lord vs. Gnome Lord
Who will win?
>>3397530
Take that!
>>3397534
Oh shit, I'm totally fucked now.
>tiles
>>3397548
>still playing in ASCII
Ok, grandpa.
>>3397546
Managed to escape upstairs and zap a wand of digging 3 floors down to minetown.
>>3397548
This tbhfam
>>3397564
After killing about 20 killer bees, I charmed some mobs in order to exterminate every lifeform in minetown.
>>3397596
Kicked open a locked door and somehow a watchman saw me.
Good thing I stashed my shit in a box earlier.
It's the only game i play on my phone, but i worry I am too stupid for it. The only class i ever get any sort of far with is samurai.
>>3397664
Knight is easy too. You can get excalibur very early in the game, and #jump is actually really useful.
>>3397664
Also being able to master ride is actually pretty sweet. riding dragons and shit at the end game.
>>3397669
Is there any sort of decent beginner guide? I've been playing it for like 5 years, but i still feel like i have no idea as to what the fuck is going on half of the time.
>>3397673
Make notes.
No offense OP, but documenting your game and showing it off to the uninitiated is against the Prime Directive.
I've managed to ascend 2 or 3 times. Took me about 2 years and 2000+ lines of notes. I've got a strategy that gets me through with my trusty Valk, but I really ought to branch out and try different roles or find a new strategy that doesn't involvefarming shit tons of holy water.

>Dungeon Crawl Stone Soup is a much better iteration of the roguelike genre.
I think they both aim for different things, really - Nethack is a lot more "simulationist" whereas Stone Soup is more of a "numbers crunching game"
That being said - play Dynahack for a better interface
>>3397780
Is unnethack decent? I recently downloaded it from the play store but it is kind of a bit too mixed up I wanna say.
>>3397780
Also I'm not op :D. How exactly does jump work btw?
>>3397804
Type #jump as a knight. You can move like a chess knight because nethack humor.
>>3397329
wait last I heard nethack's last version was something like 2007?it has tiles now!?
>>3399626
Is ADOM any good? I've played a lot of Elona, which apparently took inspiration from ADOM.
>>3399636
it's great but expect to die A LOT when first starting out & you'll be fine
>>3397329
wait wait wait
they actually released a new nethack version?
what's new?
>>3399636
ADOM has nice world-building and the areas/dungeons are conceptually interesting.
It also has pretty terrible balance (such as the Healing skill being practically mandatory if you want to win) and some rather autistic mechanics like the Cat Lord sidequest.
>>3397481
I can't figure out if you're trolling or what, but no.
>>3399880
Not trolling. I just don't have the patience for Nethack anymore. DCSS is streamlined, yeah, but it's something I can sit down and spend a half-hour playing and then move on to something else. It's a good lunch break sort of thing.
The last time I played Nethack it took hours before I finally got my stupid self killed. At least I can screw up quickly on DCSS and then try again later. I think Nethack is for people with a lot more patience than I have anymore.
>>3399626
It's had a tile version for a very long time, maybe since the 90's.
But why. I honestly can't tell what anything is without the ASCII.
>>3397780
is that tower of god?
i have more patience for rogue than nethack
nethack is just this unwieldy game to me
>>3403764
Tried Dynahack?
>>3397481
DCSS is shit. IVAN is better.
>>3403767
no, does it do anything to the gameplay or does it just fix the interface?
it's just so fucked up to me that the game has like 2-3 different ways of inputting commands
>>3403770
http://www.roguebasin.com/index.php?title=DynaHack
>>3403774
i'll check it out, thanks
also it sucks that rogueforge is dead
>>3403769
>IVAN
How is IVAN these days? I loved it more than any other roguelike back in the mid 2000's, but since official development died I haven't looked at it.
>>3403770
>it's just so fucked up to me that the game has like 2-3 different ways of inputting commands
>choice is bad
You only have to remember the way you like best. Having options can not ppossibly be a bad thing. Your way of thinking is strange and bizarre.
>>3403815
but stuff like #pray is just cruft for the sake of cruft, i feel like
rogue is simple and elegant
It's still very surreal for me that navigating to nethack.org does not direct you to version 3.4.3. I assumed a new version was never going to happen, like Half Life 3 or Duke Nukem Forever.
>>3403824
>implying half life 3 won't come out in our lifetime
>>3403824
maybe IVAN will come back to life too
nethack's pretty retarded. it's more about taking notes on inane stuff like the cost of certain scroll and potions.
it's fun to mess with but playing the game after the dwarvish mines/sokoban is a total chore. at this point you've spent hours meticulously assembling your ascension kit and now you're in an area where an monster can appear and kill you before you even react.
>>3403764
Rogue is too fucking hard
I like Angband
It is the most chill of real roguelikes
>>3407409
the best way to get further in rogue is to experiment right at the start with everything you find
just use every scroll and drink every potion you come across
>>3407183
you could say the same of mmos
