ITT we list "brilliant" design decisions found in retro games.

I'll start: jumping and running are under the same button in a side-scrolling platformer game
>>
>>3394783
I want to see that in action.
>>
>>3394787
I know /vr/ hates Youtube but literally go see any video about Bart vs Space Mutant or Swamp Thing (another NES game that shares this control scheme) there.
>>
>>3394819
>I know /vr/ hates Youtube
Youtube e-celebs =/= Youtube
>>
>>3394828
Quite. Raw, unedited game footage that shows you what the gameplay is like is fine. Footage spliced between a talking head calling the game a pile of poopy isn't.
>>
>>3394783

I had this for Game Gear. awful.
>>
>>3394783
Pressing Select to pause the game.
>>
>B is confirm
Some Saturn games.

And to a lesser extent
>O is confirm
I get the reason for that though.

>>3394828
>>3394872
I'm surprised there are people still confused about this.
>>
>>3398253
>>O is confirm
I mostly only see this on jap games
>>
>>3394872
>>3398253

This.
if I open a video and see an ugly box with an even uglier face in it the video gets closed immediately.
With commenting it's highly dependant on voice, style etc. Still, best are uncommentaded videos.
>>
>The "Attack" button and the "Pick up items/loot" button are the exact same button
>Picking up items always takes priority over attacking in the game's code
>Lots of enemies drop coins when they die which scatter across the stage and count as items
It's a good game but this bit was shit.

Console example: pause button isn't on the controllers, it's right on the fucking console.

It's not fun mashing A for 5 minutes

Inherited from the sg1000, but having the identical reset button right next to it is inviting disaster.

It's playable, but takes a while to get used to where you're gonna land since every jump is an equal arc.

>If it touches you, it's game over
>You can only avoid it two times
>If you used the energy wave against other enemies (that spawn endlessly) you can't kill the fucking monster

Sadly, the bullshit in Shadow of the Beast never ends. This is just the beginning.
>>
>>3394783
I see this was from Acclaim, and I the arcade game was by konami, so I understand there were licensing issues regarding simpsons games on console

but at the time, I wondered why they cranked out such shitty simpsons console games instead of giving us a port of the arcade game.

if the SNES and Genesis could have such excellent TMNT beat'em'ups then we certainly could have gotten a decent recreation of the simpsons arcade experience (but maybe changing to story so that burns and smithers aren't robbing stores in broad daylight)
>>
>text speed is too fucking slow and there's no way to speed it up half the time
>>
>>3399815
And there are people who actually prefer this trollbox of a console. Amazing.
>>
>>3400018
I have no idea why that game was ported to so many systems. It really should have stayed on the Amiga where it belongs as a typical Amiga game.
>>
>>3400830
It was ultimately an extremely simple game, making it easy to port to other platforms.
>>
>>3400018
You know how some games are too slow in Europe? Shadow of the Beast has the opposite problem where the NTSC version is so fucking fast the music should be replaced with Yakkity Sax.
>>
>>3400087
>I wondered why they cranked out such shitty simpsons console games instead of giving us a port of the arcade game.
There were home conversions for C64 and MS-DOS.

I don't have much knowledge about Amiga games. Are most of them always like that? I only played Agony and Lionheart.

Also, to be honest, I'm more surprised by the fact that Victor wanted to publish this mess of a game in Japan and didn't demand serious gameplay changes. The japanese Mega Drive version has better graphics, some little tweaks here and there, fixes the speed problems but it's still glitchy and almost unplayable.

>>3400886
Yeah, after reading about that in some website, I picked the Japanese version which fixed this problem. The game is still shitty, though, and a item glitch can fuck your progress.
>>
>>3400821

>>
>>3401050
How does that make it funny?
>>
>>3401259
you have autisms
>>
>>3401003
EarthBound pulled that crap too. It sucked in both games.
>>
>>3401456
It was a different kind of bad in Earthbound. Earthbound had a bigger inventory but it was never clear on when you never needed a key item again or not, like the Pencil Eraser. Not to mention you have to grind Cookies before you get the Sound Stone just so you have 1 extra spot in your inventory.

Why do people think having a tiny inventory is fun? I get they don't want us to have 20 Multi Bottle Rockets but fucking hell, don't make me have to store away key items, progress, find out i stored away a key item i need still, backtrack, and get it out.
>>
>game has no continues
>game has 1 life
>game has both
>>
>>3398259
>>3398253
Nintendo has always dictated in their developers manuals and evaluations that A=Confirm, B=Cancel. Sony fucked it up and switched, and moreover the mnemonic doesn't even work (Should be O=Ok, X=No). I've been playing FFX recently and it took me a few days to burn into my head to press X for everything.
>>
I remember renting "Bart vs. the space mutants" as a kid, due to that awesome box art...

there's a pretty decent amount of games on both consoles that do it both ways

in fact I'm pretty sure there are games from japan that have been both ways and then got changed when localized too

shit is fucking bananas

then you get some fucked up game that's like

>press square to confirm
>>
>low health warning, as a beeping sound
>plays constantly every second
>any sound effect resets the sound
>>
>fight boss
>it doesn't hit hard but it has a ton of knockback
>fought while surrounded by pits
>falling into pits doesn't hurt
>but it resets the fight entirely

I love LttP but Molrorm is definitely the low point of the game
>>
>>3394783
I wish the controls weren't so terrible in those Simpsons games.
I honestly think Bart vs. the World had a lot of good qualities. It would've been pretty solid with better controls.
>>
>dark caves

These have never been fun in the slightest. You may as well just have someone cover up your entire screen save for the area around your character
>>
>>3401456
So did Resident Evil. It's called inventory management. Do I take the extra healing item, or the bottle rocket?
>>
>>3402174
Neither, because you have to keep a phone or an eraser with you instead. The monkey cave in Earthbound is absolutely terrible, and it's made worse by not having a fucking key items section.
>>
>>3402182
But Resident Evil also makes you choose and manage keys and stuff in the same inventory where you keep your weapons, ammo and herbs.
>>
>>3402194
Can't the guy just stick the key in his pocket? Having a tiny inventory just isn't fun at all, but at least in that case it's not an rpg.
>>
>>3401152

There's a certain subset of Amiga games - Psygnosis was the biggest perpetrator - that are not only unfairly hard, but some are actually completely broken and unwinnable (BAAL is an example). A lot of game developers then came from the demo scene, so impressive coding and graphics (and catchy music) took center stage while actual gameplay took a back seat. Play a game like Blood Money, and it's obvious they spent more time on the demo-ish intro sequence than the game itself.
>>
>>3402108
Mario 64 DS has something like this, but on ice. It's infuriating.
>>
>>3402207
This. Psygnosis was fucking horrible.
>>
>surprise attack Cockatrices turns your entire party to stone before you can do anything
>>
>game has enemies too small to attack
>gives you no skill or attack to deal with them
>>
>Playing Dino Crisis
>Many of the prerendered backgrounds have visible weapons stockpiles
>"Hmmm....nothing of use here"
>"Oh, a photograph"
>>
>>3402092

>low health warning, as a beeping sound
>plays constantly every second
>Even when a different sound effects happen, the beeping doesn't stop

Pokemon RBY was pretty bad with this.
>>
>>3400830
The Amiga had the same CPU as the Atari ST and Sega Genesis.
>>
>>3401792
Circle and Cross are general purpose symbols for yes and no in Japan, so that's why they're used.
>>
>>3394783
>>3398635
Another console example:

One controller port, have to connect other controllers to each other in a daisy chain

On the other hand, it eliminated the need for a multitap. Also had a headphone jack and a decent size cord. Was basically a comfy genesis/snes hybrid controller with shoulder buttons. Not bad at all.
>>
Two things I remember from jrpgs.

One, when a game has a changed control scheme that is established in most games. If I remember correctly, FFVII had circle as the confirm button and X as the cancel button or some shit which pissed me off immensely.

One other thing which I saw in some was when you are in a shop, buying stuff and you have no idea if the stuff you bought is beter or worse than the stuff you already have. For instance, you buy a sword that one of your party members can use, but it doesn't say whether it is better or not than the one he already has. To do that, you need to buy the damn thing first, go to equip screen and compare it to the thing he had equipped.
>>
>game has no pause function despite being made after the 2600
>>
>>3403852
>If I remember correctly, FFVII had circle as the confirm button and X as the cancel button or some shit which pissed me off immensely.

Dude come on
>>
>game autodeletes things in the way of the stuff you're building
>only it makes the things cost far more when autodeleted than if you deleted it normally

It worked against itself in RCT2 anyways.
>>
>>3401003

I'm playing Beginnings and the inventory is something else. It's so small, you don't know whether to throw away or keep something, and storage is impossibly hard.
>>
>>3406245
Don't forget that dropping the items off is an ordeal until you get teleportation.
>>
>rpg

>instead of attacking another enemy party member 2 either attacks at nothing or defends

>always-online console-exclusive ad-ridden "friends list lol lmao" P2W day 1 pre-order bonus DLC ultimate collector's edition of the year version 2.0 now with 30% more microtransactions, rated 10/10 and shilled to high heaven for the past 3 months on /v/ (to great effect)
>mandatory unskippable "press A to jump"-tier superliminal tutorials
>poorly voice acted NPCs who shockingly have no patience whatsoever despite the fact they are not real people and don't have emotions, constantly nagging you at all times about where to go and what to do next

...Oh wait, that's not /vr/. Well that puts things into perspective doesn't it.
>>
>dark cave/dungeon turns entire screen black

These are not new concepts. At all.
>>
>>3401152

It's pretty much as >>3402207 explained it. The Amiga was notorious for games that looked and sounded fantistic, and then played barely average at best.

It was the first personal computer that was really capable of working with decent graphics and sound at an affordable price - comparable IBM's and Macs were still rich boys toys back then.

Being a general purpose computer and not a games console, it could be used to create media as well consume it, so it attracted a lot of artistic types, and, well, that's who ended up making the games.
>>
>>3407828

The funniest thing is that literally every point and click game does this at least once.
>>
>>3406854
>Pac-man is bad
Well screw you buddy

>>3406787
This is actually a legit design decision imo although it's totally pointless in some games
>>
>>3401003
>Game Boy Pokemon
>room for 20 items
>key items and HM's can't be tossed and takes up like 18 slots by the end of the game
>>
>>3407576

>story is a piece of shit, fanfic-tier

As much as I LOVE Resident Evil 2, this is how I felt when doing A rank runs. Whenever I died I had to sit through seemingly endless, slightly animated talking head cutscenes. This is partially why Silent Hill 1 was a better game.

if you are talking about top spin it was fixed in the mega drive willy wars collection, there it actually functions properly. Same with charge kick in megaman 4 on GB(they also made it more useful so that it can break some blocks to access hidden areas).

>>
>>3408893
You get continues on the overhead levels in the form of silver eagles.
>>
>>3403421
When I'm looking for a random game to play on my SD2SNES I will cross it off the list if it has small enemies and you can't crouch to attack them. Who thought this was a good idea? At least let me be able to jump on an enemy like in all of the major platformers.

>>3403852
Not being able to compare weapons/armor to the ones you are buying pisses me off too.

>>3407585
At least make it a fun level like in Donkey Kong Country.

>You can light torches
>They burn out after so many seconds

Bad controls for hanging from ledges is quite frustrating.
>>
>having to jump out of a spot that's only as big as your character is tall

>>
>>3401795

Took me a while to beat that first level because I didn't speak English at the time. Once I figured out that I had to remove the purple stuff, I was able to beat that level and then it was just "remove something from each level" kind of thing. I still have the cart lying around somewhere.

>>

Gross. I don't care if they fixed top spin, wily wars is one of the worst ports/remakes/whatever the hell in history.
>>
>>3407576
I had a Resident Evil IV vibe for some reason. I love the game, and yet all of those apply if memory serves.
>>
>>3411228
you can argue about music and some silly graphical issues(like rush being blue in weapon select window), but hows it "one of the worst"? I mean graphically it looks good and gameplay is solid and theres new content too, plus MM3 doesnt lag like motherfucker anymore(although it does in different places instead, but its mostly less laggy than the nes version).
>>
>>3394783
While it's not ideal, you honestly get used to it.

I always really liked Space Mutants. It was really cool getting to walk around Springfield in that first level and interact with it, like calling up Moe. I liked the little touches, such as when the people leave the movie theater after the movie is done showing. I think I spent forever just exploring and hanging out in that first level.
