Of you are Ok with an asian twist there is capcom's warriros of fate.

It is "romance of the three kingdoms" turned into a side scrolling golden axe clone. Plabale cahracters are Liu be, Guan Yu etc and the final boss is Lu Bu.

You can fight with your swords or polearms, or get on horses (similar to riding beasts in golden axe).
