Just got the original S&P the other day, and man, I had no idea what I was getting into

Lets just say this: I was not expecting the story to go the way it did. I wasn't ready for those feels. In any case, an amazing N64 classic, and a must for anyone who likes classic 3D shooters

For a Strikers 1945 as a noob is this decent scoring? I can usually max about 150k with the P-51 with No Continues.

>>
>>3379967
How are they different? I'm new to these games and I just picked that one because I like WW2 planes and it seems like it was the easiest to get into.

I see there are a fuckton of games by Psikyo that have pretty much the same engine but with different settings.
>>
>>3379963

I recommend you to go for a loop 1 clear before bothering with score. Either way, Scoring in Strikers 1945 is mostly picking up the gold at the right time

DB is collecting a bunch of coins and shooting your dragon at lucrative spots, producing more coins. The dragon works sort of like R-Type's shield.

GB2 is picking up medals when they sparkle, and getting all the gemheads. You can chain medals by only picking them up when they're brightest.

My personal STG starter pack:
Batsugun Special
Darius Gaiden
Gley Lancer
Gradius V
Metal Black
R-Type Δ
RayForce
Raiden IV: Overkill

These picks are not only fairly easy, but I think they would also leave a very good overall first impression of the genre since they offer a pretty grand cinematic styling as well.
Good luck, and have fun!

>What are the best games to play as an introduction to the genre?
>Darius Gaiden
Loads of content and great music. If you're feeling bored with one route, try going along a different route. It's also not too tough, though like most of these games they will require some dedication from a new player to get a 1cc, let alone a decent score.

>Batsugun Special
Plenty of bombs, gives you a free hit (though I don't actually know the mechanics behind it), and it's fairly easy. Plus, it's Toaplan! Can never go wrong with Toaplan.

>Gradius
It's a classic for a reason.

>Gradius 2
I prefer this to the first one, if only because you can choose different upgrade loadouts (though you'll quickly find that most of them aren't great).

>DoDonPachi
Butt rock + military sci-fi. Game got me into scoring because even if it's tough, the hit-chaining system is very intuitive.

>Armed Police Batrider
I was tempted to say Battle Garegga, but Batrider is a bit easier to a new player. Just be sure to set the dipswitches to let you select all characters (there's 18 of them, 9 from previous Raizing games), select what order you play stages, and choose single character mode (you usually play as a team of three, but you might enjoy playing as a single character to get used to how differently they all play).
>>
>>3379963
Battle garegga is the best in scoring. It makes to your game more intense.
>>
>>3389481

>>
>>3390719
Keep at it dude, did you clear the original Raiden already? i recommend you that (the no checkpoints version)
>>
>>3390729
There's no real secret to be honest. Just play until it all just gets ingrained in your head. At least that's how I do it.
I usually take extended breaks with certain games and just get back to them whenever the time presents itself.
That and Raiden II is just that fucking awesome. One of my favorite games ever.

>>3390796
Raiden DX is damn amazing too, but I prefer Raiden II just a tad more. But really, both are amazing games and worth playing.
I just wish both get re-releases like the first one does.

And yeah, slowdown free G-Darius does make a world of difference. I've only been able clear the Accordion Hazard path so far, which is probably the easiest zone selection in the game despite being right above G.T.

So I 1cc'd my first shmup, Zanac Neo. I know it's super-easy but I had a lot of fun. I didn't like the aesthetic of a lot of other beginner games enough to keep replaying and although I thought Blazing Lasers was awesome I kept getting destroyed by the boss run and never finished it.

So what's the next step up? Is there something with a relatively forgiving health, extend and/or invincibility system like Zanac but somewhat harder? I might give Blazing Lasers another shot but I'm kind of sick of it right now.

Also, I suck at vertical shmups but I'm much worse at horizontal...lol.

Thanks!

I don't think so, also they have too many gimmicks for a novice in the genre.

Batsugun Special
Armed Police Batrider normal course (even easier if you hold start when booting the game)

Metal Black's ending is so fucking worth the effort though.

But I guess X-Multiply and Kamui could substitute just fine for those two.

Make sure to trigger Envy, because Blunt and Sobutt are boring fights.

Just saying that isn't going to make him figure how to do it, twat.

>>3405481
When he says start on boot h means boot them then press f2, after that the game will always boot to a menu screen and its that you press start on to boot the game at minimum rank. As for triggering bosses on stage 5 collecting special power up and special option triggers the 2 extra bosses, someone will have to correct me as i can't remember exactly but i think special power/option are achieved by missing 3 icons and collecting the 4th of both type or something like that.
>>
>>3405415
If you like different aesthetics, I would recommend M.U.S.H.A. (japanese folklore with machines) but this game loves to punish players that lose their power-ups, so, it's better to try it later.

Super Fantasy Zone is a inoffensive game for a beginner, I guess? I didn't touch that game for years, but, if I remember well, it wasn't very hard or complex.

That's what Google is for. Or he can trial-and-error it for fun. Not everyone needs to be spoonfed.

Finally, even with saving it took me 5h on a 1 and a half hour game.
The power up system is broken, when you get to 300 it resets to 0 so you will have to finish the final stages with low power, not that it even matters its not the power its the number of hits they can take.
Also bosses seems fall down quickly if you spam fire like crazy and thats why my hands hurt like hell.

There you go its the ending screen

Caves finest hour overall, it's my second fave cave game though after guwange blue but that's only through preference for 1 loop games over 2.
>>
>>3406743
I prefer Dangun Feveron as far as Cave's 1-ALL games go. Much better scoring system, a fusion of Toaplan and Cave designs, and the gameplay is greater because you can extensively tweak your ships. Guwange's scoring is garbage and simply kills that game.
>>
>>3407235
>Guwange's scoring is garbage and simply kills that game.
Vanilla maybe but try blue desu, it fixes everything that is annoying about vanilla ie the cat spider final form can no longer be milked for ages and only lasts 3 cycles, completely removes tapping for coins changed to grazing, bombs no longer kill chain and cancel bullets to coins, many boss attacks are cancelable into coins, just an all out more fun game that's completely rebalanced.

I managed to reach Stage 6 in Gradius, after being stuck on Stage 3 for an eternity. After I beat Stage 3, Stage 4 was a cakewalk, and I only died on Stage 5 because I didn't know to shoot the arms at first. After I knew that it was easy enough for me to beat it unpowered.

I don't understand why they designed the game so you're straight up fucked if you die ever. What's even the point of having extra lives? I'm not a shmup expert so maybe an actual shmup expert has a justification, but I have a hard time seeing one.

Shit.

I've been playing the NES port and not the arcade original the whole time. I deserve to get laughed at don't I?
>>
>>3409047
It plays a lot differently to the arcade. It's pretty much its own game with little basis for comparison.
I'd say it's overall harder to recover after dying in that version but still doable. The middle of stage 3 is one of the absolute worst places to die in the NES port because of the respawn point being basically a deathtrap but it's really easy in the arcade version.
>>
>>3409062
You know, that probably explains why Stage 3 busted my balls so much.

I'm going to finish the NES version just because I'm so far in and then I'll play the arcade version. The arcade version looks a lot more fun in general with the bigger screen-size and increase in bullets.

Garudius '95 (PC-98)
Ulamander (PC-98, basically a port of Salamander for PC-98 if you want to give that a shot)
Cho Ren Sha (X68k)
Any arcade ports to X68k, like Gradius 2, R-Type 2, etc.
Any of the Gradius/Nemesis MSX games
Salamander (MSX, this version is completely different from the arcade and NES ones)
Space Manbow (MSX)
Any of the Aleste games (MSX)

At least from what I've played

Forgot to mention, if you don't want to emulate or buy a Jaguar, there exists a port of Tempest 2000 for Win95, though it lacks the music of the Jaguar version, so you'll have to supply the soundtrack yourself.
Also, you can find R-Type on Commodore 64 and its sequel on the Amiga. There's a sort of port of Darius on the Amiga which isn't very good, but if you're really into Darius it might be worth a look.
