Welcome to the Retro Game Gauntlet, gentlemen.
Last thread:

Start at NES, and work through in the following order:
NES
SNES
GB/GBC
Megadrive
Genesis
Turbografx16
DOS
NeoGeo
GBA
Commodore 64
Playstation 1

You have three days to complete the game without assistance (each game gets three days, though RPGs are allowed a week due to length).

Select your system here:
http://s3kr.it/gauntlet.html

You can also do it manually if you don't trust the random number generator:
http://s3kr.it/systems/

Rules:
1) Savestates are allowed ONLY for the purpose of taking screenshots and ONLY if your emulator/game in question does not have a pause function.
2) Rerolls are allowed under the following conditions:
-The game you get requires some sort of hardware functionality that cannot be accurately emulated to complete (eg, Boktai)
-The game would otherwise require cheats, hacks, or alteration of the software to complete due to a bug (eg, Cheetahmen II)
For games that have a high score or no end, the rule is
>if no high score has been established, set a goal and beat it
>if you.re playing something another anon already has a high score on, beat their high score
>if you are playing extended rpgs/pokemon/whatever you get a week (Depending on the game: needs to be asked in thread)

AND BRING ME SCREENSHOTS PARKER

IRC channel: #gauntlet on irc.rizon.net (Mibbit link on site)

NEW RULES/GUIDELINES TO POSTING IN THE GAUNTLET THREADS:

-Do not post screenshots every other screen, make them few and meaningful
-Do not start a new thread before current one bump limit is exceeded

>Do not post screenshots every other screen, make them few and meaningful

Just a friendly reminder. Last two threads were packed full of tons of screenshots, a good chunk of which were not that interesting and being posted like at least twice ever stage/level. It's kind of unnecessary for minute-by-minute updates guys. Just general, longer updates when you overcome a particularly tough segment or when you encounter something interesting/weird/buggy. If you want to do minute-by-minute updates, considering streaming it and just linking to the stream.
>>
>>3361090
"interesting" is subjective
Is a screenshot of every boss considered too much? How are you supposed to know what is too much?
>>
>>3361096
Usually if you post one screenshot, you should comment on another or two, having a reply to screenshot ratio of 3:1
>>
>>3361103
what if the other screenshots aren't interesting
>>
>>3361096
When you've posted two dozen images and not a single person is responding to them, you've gone way overboard.

Just post a screen every few bosses and give a brief update of the past few levels or something. Posting a bunch of images with one word comments or single sentences about something like "this enemy died in one hit" and "this game sucks" is just pointless and all it does is fill the threads with long chains of images and nothing for others to even comment on. The whole point of these gauntlets is challenge yourself and discuss shit with other anons, not just a dumping ground for one-off thoughts and nothing worth discussing.
>>
>>3361105
Well, you can always ask about how the game controls or how it works, or just give some validation like a "good job" or "nice work"
>>
>>3361105
That's the problem. Last thread was mostly like three guys just screen shotting every single thing. There was nothing to discuss because it was a bunch of images with really vague comments, if any comments at all, so there was nothing to discuss.
>>
>>3361130
that's kind of hard to do with certain games, especially non-shitty and/or popular games that have already been discussed to death
>>
>>3361160
Ask for opinions or other people's experiences with the games? A lot of people were posting how the game they were playing sucked, but didn't elaborate or ask anything.
>>
>>3361090
>Last two threads were packed full of tons of screenshots, a good chunk of which were not that interesting and being posted like at least twice ever stage/level
I think thread full of screenshots is better than empty threads full of nothing.

I still remember the segment where you have to use the heart power to enlist the help of the bears.

At least I have to admit, the game IS pretty clever and overall well designed, it's just insanely hard at times.

It also does capture the spirit of the series pretty well.

Finally beat Chuck Rock, this was the final boss. It's pretty frustrating since your attack's hitbox is very tiny so you have to be right next to the guy to hit him, but not near enough so that you get hit by him. I died a bunch of times to him but since the game gives you passwords for the levels it wasn't too bad.

Time to roll a Genesis game again and hope it isn't as bad as American Gladiators

It's okay I like them too. But my current game really has nothing interesting to show.

I'm halfway through the Europe tourny and unless it's followed by Antarctica, I should be done then. The difficulty doesn't even seem to be increasing, and the AI is unable to aim correctly in shoot-outs. If I drag the match up to this point, I basically won. Every match is the same but against different-colored shirts.

I can also upgrade some players to star players once in a while, but I have no clue what they can do more, and I can't seem to put them on offense. I've seen the AI ones do crazy dodge hops and light the ball on fire, but my goalie stopped them every single time.

Someone pick the order I tackle the robot masters in for me don't be a dick
>>
>>3362724
You're lucky. Except for one very specific Wily stage boss, this game is pretty fun.

How about the weird order I usually pick:
>Air Man
>Crash Man
>Metal Man
>Bubble Man
>Heat Man
>Wood Man
>Flash Man
>Quick Man
Caution, they're not necessarily in weakness order.
>>
>>3362724
Don't you dare play "normal" mode
The "hard" mode is more like the difficulty of the other games
The correct weakness order is bubble man -> heat man -> wood man -> air man -> crash man -> flash man -> quick man -> metal man
but which one you start with doesn't matter because this game is the easiest one

I spent all evening beating Mega Man 2, got Willy's weird Cell-like alien thing down to one more hit, paused to make a save state and grab a screenshot, and ended up hitting escape which closed the whole thing down. Why Retroarch just instant-closes on escape is beyond me. I'm not going through Willy's castle again though. If he had another form after that I'd just force myself through it, but he doesn't and I'm calling it a victory and continuing on.

I cheesed it by letting myself be killed after destroying some of the walls so that they were gone when I came back, but even that was a pain in the ass because I kept dying and they come back apparently when you hit continue.

The most important is getting to town and seeing the priest every time you come back from dungeon exploring, he'll grant you a new title if you reach a certain amount of experience. Everytime you die, you get reset to the title's experience and gold based on your title, you can abuse this to get consumable items for basically free.

For example, the first title is at 1000 exp, if you die you'll reset to 500 golds
Second title is at 2200 and you'll spawn with 800 golds. You can guess, more or less, at what threshold the next titles are

Its focus is teaching you math/shapes/letters, during the math stages where you have to select buttons then the left/right just moves the cursor around numbers, but not in a set direction. Atomic Punk has quite a bunch of annoying enemies. A lot of them actively run away from bombs making them time-consuming to kill. In addition to this each stage has a time limit. It's not a problem yet but each stage seems to increase the number of enemies while reducing the time.

I've completed two stages now, six remain. Each stage is a chain of 6-10 rounds. The middle area is an upgrade shop. You can choose upgrades to bring to a round but if you die you loose them. You also buy your extra lifes there.

The final stage was pretty tough. The gimmick was that all non-breakable blocks were replaced by fire that killed you if you walked into it. Enemies could walk through it though. There were also fast enemies that could move through all blocks. I'm really glad I brought though wall-pass upgrades. I though they would remove all challenge but instead they just made victory possible.

Anyway, that's my third gambeboy game down. Going to roll a new gamegear one tomorrow. Here's hoping for a playable one.

aand it's done, after defeating not-godzilla and the demon of long beautiful hair, joe musashi has saved the day and his bride.

I had to use a continue after getting rekt by the final boss. Beating this without ever dying seems definitely possible, and I wonder what changes on higher difficulties.

The game rewards you for never getting hit, as there is a special power-up allowing you to deal insane damage and block enemy shots as long as can avoid damage. The thunder justu shields you from damage and knockback for a few hits, making it easier to keep. I managed to bring it to the final boss, and destroyed him in a few hits.

Pretty short, pretty easy. Still fun. Also theme song playing when you win is always satisfying. Only one boss gave me trouble until I got his pattern down. Also extra lives are incredibly common in this game. I ended with like 6 lives left and I died probably a good 6 or 7 times. Also the bosses that shoot out projectiles like Fat Cat's cigar ash which you have to dodge, only travels in 8 directions so there's always a safe spite directly beneath and slightly to the side of where it fires from.

So far this game has been surprisingly enjoyable.

I'm only a few levels in but there doesn't seem to be a way to get game over. Every time you run out of lives you just repeat the stage that you died on. I think the fail state lies in timing. The background colour seems to change every 5 minutes or so to a darker shade, feels foreboding. I think it's a great idea for a platformer not to make you repeat levels you can beat yet still pose challenge in the time of completion, assuming I'm correct.

At only 13 years old, Takeshi had his father murdered by someone. In his father's room, Takeshi found a postcard posted a month before his father's death, addressed to the deceased by a curator of an archeology museum in Nagano.
Now Takeshi goes to that museum to investigate his father's mysterious death...
Sorry for double posting, I misclicked something.
>>
>>3372280
Sounds pretty interesting. Keep us updated on your progress, I love old Japanese detective games
>>
It looks like the two of them were acquaintances and used to have a lot of archeology discussion in that museum. The curator had received a letter from Takeshi's father saying that he discovered a fossil in Mount Tateshina.
Takeshi moves there to investigate and, after a short walk into the woods, finds himself in front of some weird stone statues...
>>
>>3372301
The curator said that this was the place Takeshi's father found the fossil, but was killed also. It is said that whoever touches those stone buddhas gets cursed.
>>
After messing with the little statue(who's afraid of curses in japanese games right?), Takeshi found an entrance to a cave.
Inside, they found some pre-historic pots and a clay figure(which was taken and added to the inventory).
After searching more of the inside, they come across a skeleton holding a fine, but rusty, sword. Upon closer inspection, the skeleton has huge bite marks, as if a giant monster tried to eat him.
Things are looking dangerous...

Takeshi found a door with strange words, of which only "Atman"(an ancient hindu supreme god) the curator could read. By using Takeshi's father book, he was able to read the strange words and sudenly the door opened.
Inside, Takeshi fought an emissary of the god!

>>3372386
What is even going on?
>>
>>3372394
Literal waifu warning.
By entering the Izumo Temple, Takeshi(who everyone calls Takeru) discovers his crying wife waiting for him, who went to kill Yamata no Orochi (japanese mythological 8-headed, 8-tailed dragon the size of 8 mountains)

I have no idea why Hindu divinities are involved with japanese mythos though.
>>
>>3372415
And just like that, after a little bit of talking with the folks at the temple and grabbing a new sword, Takeru is back in business, killing some beasts.

>>
>>3372449

>>
>>3372431
And now it seems Takeshi is back to present times.
Great, another archeologist. This time it's a young woman.
>>
>>3372459
Yes
>>
After messing with some horse statues and eye-socket jewels, Takeshi and Miya(the archeologist) found themselves inside another cave.
There they found a stone coffin which had another sword and a golden stamp inside.
Along the path they found a sealed door, which read somthing like "Enter the fountain to gain immortality."
Miya entered the suspicious, muddy water of the fountain and turned into a monster!
>>
Fell into a hole inside some temple where the people who sought after immortality and ended up becoming monsters are enclosed.

The dark god was reborn and the world perished...
Had to restart from the beginning of the chapter, thankfully.
>>
After reading some bad omens written on a rock from hell, Takeshi and the old man archeologist went to visit some ancient tombs.

Turns out they found another creature to kill.

This one throws frogs at you. The battles so far have been extremely easy.
>>
>>3372537
These enter the fountain to gain immortality things are always a scam, I swear.
>>
>>3372865
But hey maybe she's an immortal monster now?
>>
This archeolgist Takeuchi must be god himself. He just warped Takeshi to an ancient tomb.

Inside there was a wall engraved with Takeru's wife holding a peach in one hand, a comb in the other hand, and a tiara hanging in the middle. Nothing to do with this wall, though.

The cavern inside is a sort of maze, where there are apparently three crucial places: a room with an ancient copper bell, a room with a shallow hole, where you go down and obtain a kabuto helmet, and pic related room.

This guy Kikuchi Takehiko is a bad guy (you can tell by his face alright), and he forces you to give him your golden stamp, so he can awaken some evil spirit and kill you. Once you enter his room, the only way out is giving him the stamp, which results in a game over. Or, if you got the helmet, the spirit doesn't kill you right away and you have a chance to escape.
>>
>>3372914
Who would've guessed that throwing the tiara you found on the ground at the spirit would make a grape vine to grow and clear the way so you can escape huh?
>>
>>3372939
After throwing some the rest of the items Takeshi magically found on the ground, he came to the wall with Takeru's wife on it. She said that everything was ok and that he should fight the evil spirit. And so he fought.

Fourth boss down, four more to go.
>>
>>3372961
What a crazy ride
>>
>>3372961
Now the archeologist Takeuchi has sent Takeshi back to Nara Jidai where he makes a very educational visit to a temple and learns about some Shinto(how Izanagi washed her body and the three gods, Amaterasu, Tsukuyomi and Susanoo, were created) and Hindu stuff(mandalas and some Bodhisattva who are hinted to be correspondent to the Shinto deities? I don't really understand Hinduism. It really looked like there was this Shiva statue who was supposed to correspond to Susanoo, which makes some sort of sense, since Shiva is a god of destruction and Susanoo kind of is too). There was also this constelation on scroll on the wall, which is apparently the same constelation that is forming between chapters when you defeat the bosses. On this topic, every time Takeshi defeats a boss, a spirit appears at some location of his body. This body and star locations are probably related. This game is pretty deep in religious stuff and had I not have at least a sliver of knowledge about shinto and buddhism I would be completely lost.

On chapter 6, Takeshi is taken to old Kyoto, in front of a divination stand. The old man at the stand tells that Takeshi was born in the house of Rahu(hindu star sign that has a probability of ocurring eclipses, a bad omen) and has a heavy karma. He then gives Takeshi a Black Turtle and directs him to Mount Myouken.

There he finds Kikuchi Kazuhiko(i realized I wrote Takehiko before, my bad) once again, and has to watch him summon a huge stone horse statue. The horse spits a sword, which Takeshi grabs to fight it.

This boss simply kicked my ass.

I had skipped some dialogues which makes those open books by the side of the inventory appear. Apparently, having more books make you stronger (my fight with one book was unwinnable while fighting with three and a half was easy).
Turns out that horse statue was Susanoo's statue. Kikuchi is a descendant of the Kumaso clan, which was decimated by the Yamato clan, and now seeks revenge by awakening a dark god that will bring destruction to the Yamato.
This is all japanese mythos.

I've been thinking, where does Takeshi's father role come into relevance? He left a book that makes you able to read some ancient words(sanskrit, maybe?) and that's it.

Also, I had never seen japanese religion by the hindu side. I mean, the buddhism that got to Japan was heavily influenced by China and lost some connection to the original buddhism from India, to the point that nowadays the two of them are very different. I'm glad I stumbled upon this game, thanks to RNG.

Oh, the part about immortality is usually true. But it's like
"Become immortal, but a monster"
"Become immortal, but as a spirit"
"Become immortal, but you still get wounds/get old until you're a thing that cannot die but really wishes he could"
"Become immortal, but you're stuck there forever"
Etc.

Wasn't Izanagi the male one? Also I think that the Japanese integrated a lot of foreign stuff into their flavor of religion.

Then again, so did christianity, after all Siddharta is considered a saint (or rather, two saints) in the Catholic church.

Third stage was a cemetery level, and you fight the boss on a clock tower. The music on that level was really good; it had a Castlevania feel to it. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JHjaWPP57EI
>>
>>3374176
And so it ends.

Takeshi goes home to find some dude named Kikuchi Ogata, who tells you that Kazuhiko killed Takeshi's father and Takeshi's mother was also his ally.

Takeshi goes home and talks with his mother. She reveals that she is a descendant from the Kumaso, as is her little brother, Kazuhiko. Kazuhiko killed her husband because he was trying to become Artman and destroy the dark god. He also gets the Magatama, which is the last of the three sacred treasures.

Takeshi runs off ony to find Ogata, which wants the Magatama so himself can become the dark god. Takeshi's mother stops him and tells Takeshi to take her coat back home and run off.

Takeshi goes home once again, grabs his mother's coat and runs into Kazuhiko. Because Takeshi was wearing the coat, Kazuhiko mistakes him for his mother, which allows Takeshi to come close and fight the last boss.

The spirits collected represent the stars in the constellation of Orion and, apparently, some regions in Japan.

The end.

I wasn't expecting this at all. At first it looked like a classic japanese adventure game, with your murder incident, visiting old places and caverns. But soon it took a harsh turn into something else I can't really call a game. It was a very linear adventure game mixed with some extremely shallow sideview boss fights. The plot seems to be very intricate and full of mysteries at a first glance, but is explained clearly by the game itself, leaving little room for imagination or speculation. It all comes to a plain old and boring fight of good vs evil, some destined kid facing trials, same old bullshit. The only interesting thing is the eastern asian mythos/astrology theme, which even for japanese games is something else.

I would only recommend this game if you are really into this subject and wants to sit back and relax, since there's no challenge at all.

Now to the next system...

>>
>>3374259
So Takeshi basically was a descendant of both clans. Who is Ogata, however? Does he just come out of the left field?

Also I think that the places there might be seats of power/important shrines in western Japan. Although I'm not 100% sure.

A few more things to say about the game:

The rivals are pure 90's idea of future, which is great. The car physics aren't that great, but the control you have over it is fenomenal. You have the regular turn by pressing directions, strafe by pressing L/R, sharp turn by pressing both and you can release L/R in the middle of a sharp turn so your car keeps drifting.
The weapons are balanced, the harder it is to hit, the more damage it deals.

Now here are some cons. The button for switching weapons is not comfortable. You accelerate on A and have to switch weapons on Y. The rivals past stage 2 have cars that are way better than yours independent on how much you spent on it, so it seems pointless to upgrade your car. There's no give up option, for when you are so behind and just want to restart the race. Why is there even a turbo upgrade when there's no turbo button?

Anyone know what happened to the Gauntlet website and if its going to be back up? I keep getting a refuse to connect.

I'd re-roll to be honest

shit what a setback
well I'm giving myself more time for this game since it's 3 RPGs rolled into one, so I'm not worried about running out of time

Heck, if you're enjoying it man, keep at it. Keep us posted on your progress

If you grind enough, a mage should be able to learn a level 7 spell to teleport you to where they are. Not exactly ideal, but hey.

site is down, anybody got another link to the list?

lucky me.

Never played this version, but I should still be good.

you push start and search on the tile they died
you have to have open slot for each character
revive them at the temple. small chance they dont revive and become ashes. then small chance they dont revive and gone for good. dont bother recovering shitty charcters

Another question for /vr/, is there a way to identify items without paying the shop?
It's always a little disappointing when you pick up some loot and can't really sell it for more than 1 GP.

Can't the Sage/Wizard identify for free?

Just read the last few posts, ffs.

There's no Sage or Wizard class. Just Mage, Priest, and Bishop.
>>
>>3383134
Ah I meant the bishop class, the hybrid between Mage and Priest, he can identify stuff for free, anywhere

Not as good as I do in the arcade, but solid. I think for now I'll set my score to beat at 100,000, which is roughly 3 loops. The game's slightly different than the arcade, as Bluto is slighty dumber in his movement patterns but does attacks quicker. Overall, pretty solid port for a great arcade game.

FUCK

Bluto just kinda instantly is able to shift his position, which is a serious problem on the second loop ship stage because he moves fast and you need to navigate through some tricky shit. You gotta get kinda lucky. Arcade version was less bullshit about it, as long as you know what to do and react accordingly good players can get insane scores in the millions.

I failed at completing Tecmo Bowl on the GB(lots of things to do, but loved the game), so I'll go back one step and play SNES again.

And what do we have here...
>>
>>3384562
There's "Normal Mode", which I suppose is a single match, and "Challenge Mode", which has you tackling different regions and having to match certain conditions. I'm going for "Challenge Mode", hoping that by beating every region the game is "completed".

Unfortunately, there's no music during the matches, which suck. But hey, my first hand into the game and I'm having some good luck.

i give up on the 100,000. I could get it if I played for another hour or two and got lucky but Popeye isn't a very exciting game and this port is not as solid gameplaywise. 80,000 is aight.

Not a bad game, just very basic.

Next up is some JP-only SFC game not even I've heard of. Hope the patch doesn't suck.
>>
>>3384602
It feels almost like poker. You need to create four combinations of three tiles each(called "melds", they can be sequences or three of the same tile) and one pair. If you are the frist to complete a hand, you win. You calculate your score based on the combination of melds you have(there's stuff like all tiles of the same suit, only melds formed by three of the same tile, etc.)
You you drew your last tile from the pile(which is called "wall"), everyone pays. If you stole the winning tile from someone's discard, that someone pays.
There's a lot of rules regarding turns, turn order, when you can and cannot win, etc. The basics are simple, but the huge amount of specific rules make it somewhat dificult to pick it up.

Unfortunately, it looks like BILL's journey will be cut short.

Light Fantasy is actual not as generic as it initially appears. Your party consists of random townsfolk and other people you can convince to help out. The combat itself is also unique, but not in a good way. Its sort of like an SRPG, where each character can move to attack. Having all the menus in japanese make combat take even longer than normal, and the pacing of said battles are bad because some guys will start far from the enemy and waste your time as they will not reach the enemy by the time the battle ends. Also, the flashing of your movement range is insane, it goes super fast.

Considering how there's barely any info on this game and the one thing resembling a guide recommends using cheats, I'm gonna accept my defeat. After all, this is only the second game. I could put in 30 hours and figure the game out but I'd rather not.

I do hope the game gets translated someday. It seems to have some interesting mechanics that I can't figure out. Somehow it even has a sequel that's also not translated

I've realized that there won't be enough time, even in a week, for me to finish this game. There are twelve challenges and some of these need up to nine matches. If I ever fail (which is likely) I'll have to do it again.
I'll step down one more time and tackle the NES once again...

This game looks surprisingly good at times, also the second level of the tower is a pain. There a monster type that does an instant kill spell and every single time it hits the healer, once that happens it's back to town. Restarted the second floor 4 times already
