Is the first Dragon Warrior worth playing? I'm playing FF6 for the first time and I'm really enjoying it, so I thought I'd check it out.

Honestly? No. It's really grindy and extremely bare-bones. The later Dragonquest games are pretty good though.
Short but my fave Dragon Warrior game.
Considering how little time it will take you to get through it, it's not a huge investment even if it's not a spectacularly deep game.

Grab one of the remakes if you decide to give it a go.
Or go with the NES version if you like to hunt through menus for every little thing.
Or go with the Famicom version if you want to hunt through menus, have no idea of which direction you are facing, look at moonrunes, and have to remember passwords for your saves.
It's really your choice.

no. play SFC DQ1 instead.

Don't forget the amount of grinding on the NES and FC

Only if you're bad

What's the recommended level for finishing the game? Like 16~19? Even hitting Lvl. 30 the final boss is a pain.

I don't see how skill particularly impacts it. You can economize money by holding out with inns until the last moment and carefully planning your purchases but for XP it doesn't make a big difference.
