I don't usually come on /vr/ but I just learned that the most recent versions of project 64 are infested with spyware and malware, and I was salty enough to start a thread about it. There goes my dream of ever playing mystical ninja starring goemon again. Fuck.
>>
>>3266230
Just buy a flashcart, fuck emulation. 64 emulators are shit anyway.
>>
>>3266235
Being an inexperienced retard, I don't know how to use one. I've only ever emulated stuff.
>>
>>3266241
It is literally easier to use a flashcart than set up an emulator.
>>
>>3266230
Wait, what about Mupen 64?
>>
So? What do the most recent versions of P64 add that you need? Can you think of anything?

Just use 1.6, or Jabo's 1.6.1, or Mupen64. I can't understand why people are so concerned about this when P64 really hasn't had anything improved or added to it since the majority of the dev team quit after 1.6.

Hell, if you really feel the need to get the most recent version but are worried about the spy/malware, then try this:
"you can run the installer with /noads and it will not load anything from the 3rd party ad provider. "
You can also download the source code from github and compile it yourself, avoiding the spy/malware entirely.

Check out the sticky, op.

the emulation wiki is very informative and tells you about all sorts of options you've got
>>
>>3266276
I only really care because I've always used p64 in the past and it maddens me to see it fall to this.
>>
>>3266276

Mupen is beyond shit. You have to go out of your way switching plug ins every time something triggers it to crash.

I've lost progress many times like that, makes me want to quit playing games for good.
>>
>>3266281
Nobody checks the sticky or uses google.

Ever.

That's why you tell them to.
>>
>>3266230
I've had cases of games working better in 1.6 over the latest version.
>>
>>3266310

Project64 development post-1.6 is like Duke Nukem Forever-level mismanagement. The only legitimate improvement they've made is removing the cheat limit, besides that it's considerably less stable than 1.6 and ultimately worthless.

What's this?
Is this a malware-free fork of PJ64 that I found with 3 minutes of googling?
Why I think it is!

>>3266275

having to use the command-line and possibly editing a .cfg or two is MIND-BLOWINGLY TERRIFYING for windows users
>>
>>3266608
It's funny to imagine Windows users trying though
>>
>>3266275
I've tried that. Mupen runs at a much lower clock rate than the actual n64, probably as a means of improving speed. It lags like hell.
>>
>>3266235
This, buy a fucking Everdrive.
>>
There is nothing worth replaying on the n64 anyways

Its my opinion, feel free to ignore it.
>>
>>3267231
Sure, however lots of anons are throwing hot opinions like that around to start shit.
>>
>>3267239
Sorry I guess it did sound like a shitpost, I went trough the entire library a few years back and the issue is that all the ideas of teh n64 have been surpassed in later games, while the ps1 and saturn still have unique games with narrative driven gameplay that are more worth going back to
>>
>>3267241
That's fair enough.

Although, I do still enjoy the classics for the system though, like Mario Kart, Smash, or Pokemon Snap .
While there's plenty of shovelware, and many of the games have been improved upon, I feel that many titles still hold up.
>>
>>3267241
Gotta agree with this anon here. Outside of first party and 2nd party like rare, there isn't really anything else worth playing. Even with multiplatform third party games the N64 version is the weakest.
>>
>>3266230
As mentioned
>PJ64 is shit
>N64 emulators collectively are shit
Mupen is also shit. It's not quite as bad but I run into compatibility problems that cause crashes and other big issues in major titles with it. Just buy an N64 (if you don't have one) and a flashcart. With a flashcart, all you'll need to do is possibly copy data onto it from your computer and then insert it into the console. It's guaranteed to be free of the nonsense you'd get from N64 emulation. You do lose out on some things like savestates and speedups, but those probably aren't terribly important for most N64 games anyway. You also get to know you're playing the "real" version by playing the exact copy on real hardware, even if it doesn't literally come in the form of the same object.
>>
It's been like that for as long as I remember. If you blindly click next, you deserve whatever you get.
>>
>>3267269
This and you always do a custom install. I never trust the default installer for anything.

I know you aren't talking shit about Star Fox 64 my man
>>
>>3267318
Star Fox 64 wasn't that good despite being a Nintendo game.
>>
>>3268576
Lies and slander, that game is great.
>>
>>3268584
And it's one of the weaker games that came from Nintendo.
>>
>>3266241
Buy flash cart, follow included instructions and put all the Nintendo 64 roms you want on the cart, put flashcart into N64, play your roms as if you had the real cartridges.
>>
NEWS FLASH:
Latest version of Project64(not the stable release, the github) has ALL ad/spy/malware removed entirely from the installer.
https://github.com/project64/project64/commit/077780d0f3214c5331ca7d4b3602019998fae871
Guess Zilmar finally decided the money wasn't worth the complaints and ill-will from users.

>P64 gets ad/spy/malware put into install
>everyone rages and loses their minds
>P64 gets rid of ad/spy/malware
>No one has anything to say

Yeah, I can tell all you people really gave a shit about this. Don't you bandwagoning gits have a dead gorilla to go cry about?
