What games would win GOTY in the 1990s?
This game would be the 1991 winner
>>
Mario world also came out that year
>>
>>3261087
1992 - Super Mario Land 2: 6 Golden Coins
(It wouldn't actually win. :c)
>>
>>3261091

No, in japan it was in 1990.

Street Fighter II came out in 1991 though
>>
>>3261101
Street Fighter 2 could be a contender for game of the decade, let alone game of 1991.

GOTY 1993 coming through
>>
Here's what probably would have been the 90's GOTYs.

1990: SMB 3
1991: Street Fighter 2
1992: Maybe Sonic 2?
1993: DOOM
1994: Super Metroid
1995: Chrono Trigger
1996: Super Mario 64
1997: FF VII
1998: Ocarina of Time
1999: Unreal Tournament?

Note: these are not my actual opinions on the matter; don't get triggered about this shit
>>
>>3261305
Disregard, forgot Doom came out that year

Mortal Kombat would be a strong contender for 1992.

1992 B.C. maybe.

is this international or just region specific because I honestly have two separate lists for japan and the US
>>
I'm going off of initial release dates, not necessarily western ones. This is also a mix of my own personal taste along with what I would expect to win given popularity (I.e. Chrono trigger is not my personal favorite 1995 game, but it certainly is one of the most popular from them at year).

1990: Super Mario World
>runner-up: Dragon Warrior IV
1991: A Link to the Past
>runner-up: Street Fighter 2
1992: Sonic the Hedgehog 2
>runner-up: Wolfenstein 3D
1993: Doom
>runner-up: Mega Man X
1994 (toughest year to pick for me, so many good games): Super Metroid
>runner-up: Doom 2
1995: Chrono Trigger
>runner-up: Yoshi's Island
1996: Super Mario 64
>runner-up: Quake
1997: Final Fantasy VII
>runner-up: Final Fantasy Tactics
1998: Ocarina of Time
>runner-up: Half Life
1999:

Honorable mentions (I'm sure I will miss plenty):
1991: Sonic the Hedgehog, Super Castlevania IV
1992: Mortal Kombat, Super Mario Land 2
1993: Mortal Kombat 2, Link's Awakening, Kirby's Adventure, Mario All-Stars, NBA Jam
1994: Earthworm Jim, Sonic 3/Sonic and Knuckles, Final Fantasy VI, Castlevania Bloodlines, Donkey Kong Country, Ken Griffey Jr. Presents Major League Baseball
1995: Donkey Kong Country 2, Rayman, Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3, Tales of Phantasia, Dracula X
1996: Duke Nukem, Diablo, Resident Evil, Pokemon (first gen)
1997: Goldeneye, Star Fox 64, Fallout, Crash Bandicoot 2
1998: Spyro, Baldur's Gate, Banjo Kazooie, Metal Gear Solid, Resident Evil 2, Starcraft, Xenogears, Fallout 2
1999: Super Smash Bros., Crazy Taxi, Donkey Kong 64, Age of Empires 2, Tony Hawk's Pro Skater, Roller Coaster Tycoon, Pokemon Gold/Silver, Resident Evil 3

I already can see plenty I missed in the mentions but I'll be typing this for an hour if I keep remembering games. 90s were a good decade for games whether the gen 5 haters want to admit it or not
>>
>>3261469
Forgot to type 1999's winner and runner up:

Winner: Unreal Tournament
>runner-up: Silent Hill

Basically anything not FPS for DOS (thanks for including DN3D by the way).

Windows department is also pretty bare, save for RPG/RTS.
>>
>>3261502
I'll admit I completely forgot about tomb raider and probably would have bumped it to runner-up over Quake, but Mario 64 would have won GOTY hands-down, even if for the hype alone. You have to think back to a 1996 mindset, not 20/20 hindsight 20 years later. And Mario 64 was YUUUGE.

The marketing maybe, but the fact of the matter is that Lara is as much a respected archaeologist as she is a sexy tomb raider. It's like complaining that real women who are both accomplished and attractive are themselves somehow misogynistic.

actually, Super Mario 64 is the best selling game of that generation.
It is the clear winner of that year.

Street Fighter 2 was the biggest cultural phenomenon videogame of the 90s until Pokemon. it is the winner of that year.

Street Fighter 2, Doom and Mario 64 are the 3 most important games of that decade and should be the winners of their year. the three are genre defining.

Literally nothing wrong with the camera. gut gud.

And even if you don't like the camera, give me a 3D platformer that was already out that had a better camera. It was completely uncharted territory.

The game is, and always has been comfy as fuck. I can't even tell you to play more, because the learning curve on the controls, camera included, is almost non-existent. Something must be fundamentally wrong with your spatial recognition.

I actually appreciated the Jaguar for a few of its games at the time (my babysitter's boyfriend had one). Tempest was awesome and it had one of the best ports of Raiden at the time. I also played DOOM for the first time on Jaguar and besides the missing music the port is solid.

Bearing a grudge against an entire console is really dumb, you're forcing yourself to miss out on lots of great games. Especially in this day an age with emulation being so easy to accomplish and (most) retro consoles having flashcarts available.

The N64 has some really amazing games you owe it to yourself to experience.

Not him, but could you recommend some?
I'm waiting for parts to finish RGB mod. So far I paln to play: Wonder Project J2, Custom Robo, Evangelion 64, Mischief Makers, Sin and Punishment. And probably Goemon games.
Any essentials I'm missing?
I'm not into 3D platformers or Nintendo first party games.

Conker's Bad Fur Day. It's kinda a platformer but they change it up every now and then.

Bangaioh, Jet Force Gemini, Rogue Squadron, Indiana Jones, Doom 64 and Wipeout 64 are my favorite 3rd party you didn't mention.

As much as you personally don't like the N64, it still has a good chunk of popular games that remain as some of the best of the 5th gen, your argument is invalid.

Anyway, to reply to >>3261981, the N64 was actually the most advanced consumer-grade gaming system when it came out in 1996, only surpassed by the first 3dfx video card, released months later.

The only game of 1996 that came close to the level of graphics of N64 was Quake. Ironically, Quake came out 1 day after the official N64 launch in Japan.

Nothing really. Their games are not for me, that's all.
Maybe because Nintendo was never represented well in my region back then (except for Famiclone) and I wasn't impressed with some first party games for their platforms via emulation.

1982: Robotron 2084
1983: Star Wars
1987: Operation Wolf
1988: New Zealand Story
1989: Shadow of the Beast
1990: Metal Gear 2
1991: Monkey Island 2
1992: Star Control 2
1993: Rondo of the Blood
1994: Final Fantasy VI
1995: Panzer Dragoon
1996: Tomb Raider
1997: Elevator Action Returns
1998: Grim Fandango
1999: Soul Calibur
2001: Conker's Bad Fur day
2003: Mario and Luigi: Superstar Saga
2004: Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Old Door
2005: Wario Ware Twisted
2006: Okami
2015: Ori

Feel free to add, rememeber, it has to be a game that while good, didn't see as well, which somehow means it's better than what outsold it, because "the masses" just didn't get it like the special /vr/ snowflakes.

So if tomorrow people started eating shit you would objectively think shit is good just because of that?

You believe Call of Duty or Candy Crush are good?

I get your point I fucking hate hipsters, but the total opposite its just as fucking pathetic.

If the list was about sales then the thread would be irrelevant, just google the most sold of every year and tadaa!

This is supposed to be about our personal GOTYs, its personal taste, I don't care how objectively good OTT is, I don't fucking like it, I would choose one of Unreal, Resident Evil 2 and yes, Grim Fandango, Zelda can suck my dick, it doesn't make me a contrarian.

>>3271123
Half-Life is the Crash-Bandicoot of its time. It may be a good game, but the number of rabid fanboys constantly raving about it is so annoying, people would rather forget that stain on the history of gaming exists
>>
>>3271127
Much of this focus on Crash Bandicoot lately is largely retrospective. It's literally sourced from people's childhoods (particularly those born around ~1995).

The Crash series never got particularly remarkable game reviews back then. Solid but not amazing. People were barely talking up the game series in a positive light. I wasn't even aware there were actual Crash Bandicoot fans until like 5 years ago.

To put it simply, none of the Crash Bandicoot games would have ever even passed people's minds as a GOTY contender.

Half-Life on the other hand, was immediately recognized as something a bit more than just another shooter. And it actually did win GOTY awards back then. Yes, the fans are really annoying, and they are a subset of Valvedrones who are a subset of PC mustard race. But Half-Life is actually notable unlike the Crash series.
>>
>>3270350
>You believe Call of Duty or Candy Crush are good?
COD is good, it's just repetitive.
>>
>>3271158
>Half-Life on the other hand, was immediately recognized as something a bit more than just another shooter
I lived through that time, as active gamer, but this never happened to me. Half Life was a game, an ok one. I played it three time so far. Three times unfinished, because I always get bored halfway through. I tried to give the game a chance, but it's just not working out. I am very unlikely to ever pick up HL2. The series does absolutely nothing to me, and I have a really hard time to see the appeal even as an outsider, which makes all the raving even more puzzling to me.

SM64 completely outclasses Tomb Raider in every fucking department.
The game still stands up perfectly today (some people have problems with the camera but I don't really see any major problem here seeing as you can move it around as you please).

Tomb Raider plays, looks and sounds like shit.

SM64 set the standard by which all 3d platformers are measured against.

Candy crush isn't even a bad game. You don't have to buy anything to play it(you can play for literally hours every day without buying a single thing) and it's just a match 3 game. /Be/ acts like it doesn't enjoy columns or other similar games.

Nyet to all. THIS is the true GOTY 2015.

As for the 90's it would go something like this for me:
1990: OutZone
1991: Metal Black
1992: Pocky & Rocky
1993: Raiden II
1994: Darius Gaiden
1995: Mystic Ark
1996: Metal Slug
1997: Final Fantasy VII
1998: F-Zero X
1999: R-Type Δ
>>
>>3273172
Pretty good taste, played and loved all of those except for Mystic Ark and Final Fantasy.
>>
>>3261087
Whichever one you got for Christmas given any particular year.
>>
>>3261087
>This game would be the 1991 winner

Super Mario World came out that year.

And more importantly Street Fighter II did, which was unbelievably popular to the point that it being initially exclusive to SNES (once it finally got ported) is probably what singlehandedly made SNES win that generation.

Candy crush sucks dude. Go play something with some soul

You can't exactly move the camera around as you please. It still gets stuck on walls and switches to weird angles when you don't want it to
>>
>>3273782
Not him, but I never had problems like this playing Mario 64, largely because most areas are large and open. The camera generally loses its versatility in closed spaces like the igloo or the volcano, but never to the point of unplayability. Mario 64's camera at its worst is still much better than Tomb Raider's at its best

No, SF2 just prevented SNES from flopping in the West. The real reason SNES won was the Japan market stranglehold, partially reinforced by SF2 but probably would have appended anyway

Also, Street Fighter II didn't come out on the Super NES until '92. '91 was the arcade release.

Shit opinions time:
1990: Super Mario 3
1991: Civilization
1992: Kirby's Dream Land
1993: Aerobiz
1994: SimCity 2000
1995: Command & Conquer
1996: Civilization II
1997: GoldenEye 007
1998: Fallout 2
1999: Sid Meier's Alpha Centauri
2000: Deus Ex

Restricted to games I've actually played, using US release dates. 1994-1996 were really tough calls.

Pretty good opinions, actually. Good job, Anon.

Ok? Your point?

He's saying he's better than you because he's not a brand loyalist. And he's right.
>>
>>3279234
More like he's a basement-dwelling neckbeard that spent too much time playing videogames.

Saying "I had everything when I was a kid" doesn't make you better, it makes you look like a virgin.
>>
>>3279267
No, you look like a virgin for projecting your own insecurities onto someone you don't even know.

Fucking retarded kid.

One honourable mention missed for 1997

My personal list:

1990: SMB3
1991: Street Fighter 2 or Civilization
1992: Ultima Underworld or Wolfenstein 3D
1993: Myst or Doom
1994: Super Metroid, Doom 2, or DKC
1995: Warcraft 2, Descent, or Worms
1996: C&C Red Alert, Crash Bandicoot, Diablo, Duke Nukem 3D, Quake, or Tomb Raider
1997: Fallout, FF7, Age of Empires, or GoldenEye 007
1998: Half-Life, Metal Gear Solid, Pokemon, or Starcraft
1999: Unreal Tournament or System Shock 2

It all depends on if the GOTY was being given for popularity or quality, plus which genre the judges enjoy more. Keep in mind that Doom was wildly popular, but it was still out-sold by Myst.

Why do Nintendildos get buttblasted so easily around here? Are they upset their favourite company is on the verge of death?
>>
>>3280019
Why do Segafags cry when someone has even a tiny amount of disagreement with them? Because their company has been dead for 15 years?
>>
>>3280024
Didn't know a dead company could acquire other companies or keep making new great games.
