What does /vr/ think about Arc the Lad series, more specifically

What makes it so great? Hows random encounters?

I have a friend who really liked it but I could never get into it.

there are no "random encounters" every battle is at predetermined sections of the map.

1 and 2 are good. Personally though I like 3 best.

Very depressing series, especially the second game.

1 and 2 played together are pretty much one of the best story focused RPG out there, even though it's depressing as shit, 2 also has amazing pixel art and funky 90 music, then again, it's very long, not DQVII long, but long nonetheless.

3 is kinda lackluster on everything, the cast is eh, music is alright I guess, graphics are kinda garbage except for the sprites which are still good, it did fix a lot of stuff from the previous games, especially the terrible cooldowns during fights when you have to wait for EVERY FUCKING ENEMY to explode into a longass shower of coins EVERY FUCKING TIME. The game doesn't really hold a candle to the first two, though it's nice to see the world being in a post-apocalyptic setting, but it's still too reliant on the characters from the other games to be interesting, when it comes to the original cast in terms of story it's boring and soulless, and the WD translation didn't help either.

Gotta love how Arc's legacy gets spit on even in the last game, not even the dead can escape from suffering.
