Mega CD wouldn't have really made sense without the system being called Megadrive in the US, although I think Mega CD was a better name for the device. Sega made multiple consoles that used CD-ROMs and "Sega CD" is somewhat confusingly generic. With Mega CD you immediately know that it's part of the Megadrive.
