Why haven't you bought the best portable device for retro gaming yet?

>Uses custom made buttons and vita joysticks
What??
>>
>>3230082
>Best
>Not powerful enough to use shaders in RetroArch
>Awkward button placement; uses the DS form factor despite not having a second screen
>Analog sticks given the sweet spot
>Mushy D-pad
>Battery has a tendency to keel over if you use a fast charging cable

What??
>>
>>3230150
I agree that it has its issues but is there anything that has the same form factor that is better?
>>
This might be a legit shill thread
>>
>>3230158
Probably an N3DS atm. One of the models with an IPS screen. It has a 240p screen, and a really nice D-pad from what I've heard.
The only thing is that it can't do worth a damn is PS1 emulation. But hey, it improve in the future.

Though I'm waiting for an Android handheld with a 4K screen (for muh near-perfect CRT filters), one of Nvidia's best mobile processors and the Vita's form factor.
I'm probably going to end up waiting a long time for such a thing. ;_;

The hardware is decent but not enough for emulation of newer systems. I don't like its aesthetics either.
I'd prefer to buy something like pic-related.

>>

I wouldn't doubt it. The creators have been known to shill on Reddit.
>>
>>3230179
JXD makes the best portables for emulation. The one in my pic for instance emulates anything from the fifth generation and older quite flawlessly. It also runs PSP, DS, Dreamcast really well.

I know you're trying to convince everyone here that 3DS is the best machine for emulation ever, but at least try not spilling bullshit about the better alternatives.
>>
>>3230206
I never claimed the 3DS was the best device for emulation ever, you fucking moron. If you go back and read I was say it is the best device for emulation with that particular form factor.

>spilling bullshit
JXD devices are known to have issues with firmware, build-quality and overheating. A simple Google search confirms this.
>>
>>3230171
>n3ds
Far from it. Kill yourself. The dpad is shit compared to the Vita.
>>
>>3230220
You first, lad.

>Vita
I don't give a shit about console wars, but the Vita is a failure of a handheld and was utterly beaten into submission by the 3DS this gen. The fact that it will never be fully hacked renders its "perfect D-pad" useless for emulation.

How old are you? I can't believe someone who reached maturity would have that mentality.

These issues only happened with their older devices and there have always been custom firmwares that solved that particular issue anyway. I have a S5800 and it has none of these problems. The S192 doesn't seem to have them either.

When was the last time you checked on the 3DS emulation scene? You're aware that the New 3DS is much more capable that its older counterpart, right? SNES, Genesis and PC Engine emulation are superb.

He doesn't even have to do that. A decent Windows tablet is cheaper than the 3DS and the android devices being discussed ITT
>>
>>3230312

truth. I too hope it'll show there's a market for a proper Windows handheld in the future.
>>
>>3230662
A controller for his existing Android phone is even cheaper. Moga gamepad ftw
>>
>>3230662
This. 5"-7" Winows 8 tablets are like $50 and I've started to see the first Surface Pro drop down flirtatiously close to $100.

Windows tablets are slightly funky to use. Sometimes you may need to plug in a keyboard and mouse to straighten shit out on it if you fuck it up since the whole tablet-form-factor isn't Window's native deal but I can't believe people don't use them more.
>>
>>3230662
Problem with cheap Windows tablets with pricetag below 150$ - overheating - they often lack any basic heatsinking (sometimes even no holes in the casing. They operate well when not under load, but any emulation/gaming for longer than 10 minutes makes processors to overheat and throttle down to 500Mhz and stay there until you switch the device off and let it cool down.

Sometimes it's not even the processor's fault, but the composition of the device puts battery right under the CPU. Both generate heat and it goes as well as you'd expect.
>>
>>3230296
What do you need 1080 for emulation? I rather have a lower resolution and 16:10 or 3:2 aspect ratio.
And a proper USB port for controllers instead of wireless nonsense.

I really, really, REALLY want to like the Shield, but it's frankly a mess.

Too heavy, too bulky, the control layout is uncomfortable to the point my hands actually hurt after a mere half an hour I played on that and this comes from someone who has played most of the handhelds that ever existed.

It's got some good specs, but the package is absolute garbage, at this point it's better to buy the Shield tablet with a good controller instead of this tank.

And for what it can do, it still costs too much.

None of those problems, you say? Well, it sure took them long enough to make a device that isn't shit. I'll have to look into the two models you mentioned.

Not that anon but it isn't useless for emulation because you can still run all the psp emulators. Obviously not worth the money for a psp with a better dpad but still clearly useful for emulation.

>>3230164
I would doubt it. They most likely won't sell any units because of this thread, at most one or two.

>>3230171
I don't think PS1 will get any better on n3DS unfortunately. It's been pretty stagnen since the official retroarch build for 3DS came out. Maybe the new PS1 emulator for retroarch will be better when that's finished and ported.

It's still added functionality for the system. I don't know why that's something to be upset about. If you want to make it better you should write better emulators or find better exploits for the Vita.
>>
>>3230697
Both mine have the CPU flush against the back. You can really feel it when it gets hot. One has a metal back which acts as a heatsink. Never had a problem with overheating while emulating and I've played a few hours straight. I have had slowdowns in graphically intensive parts of modern games. Everything pre-2010 I've tried runs fine indefinitely.

It's so shit that it's not even worth bothering with. That D-pad isn't going to make up for how poorly the PSP's SNES emulator performs.

>I don't know why that's something to be upset about.
Who's upset? I'm just saying, the Vita shouldn't even be considered until it gets full CFW and its own emulators written for it.

>If you want to make it better you should write better emulators or find better exploits for the Vita.
I don't care about making it better. It's incredibly locked down and uses a proprietary memory format. Android gaming handhelds are the future.

To be fair that old SNES emulator on the PSP is the one that has more problems compared to all the other emulators.
Haven't tried retroarch on the PSP though, maybe it fixes those problems.
