I played this on a whim and it has quicky becomes one of my favorite arcade games of all time.
Any retro games you haven't played until recently that you now consider all-time favorites?
Pitfall 2 Arcade by Sega. It's a thing that exists, heaps better than the console versions.

Try Crack Down, also on the System 24 board, if you liked Gain Ground.
Shining Force 2
the game randomly popped into my head a week ago when I was thinking of something to play and it's pretty great so far

Would I enjoy Shining Force if I think Fire Emblem is RNG bullshit?

Crack Down was pretty fun. The screen layout was kind of nuts, but it was quite ahead of its time in some aspects. 8/10.

Enjoyed the Console ports, is it much different?

The Genesis version is very close, the arcade has a bigger screen and thus larger maps, which change the space of the game very slightly since enemies are more spread out.
I've never played the PC Engine version but it's supposedly easier

SF is a lot less random if that's what you mean.
Never owned a sega system, nor did any of my friends. I just started playing this a couple weeks ago and haven't even gotten to the end yet, but holy shit is it fun.

Even though I almost exclusively retro game, I actually seldom play games from my childhood.
My answer is OutRun tho

I got this a few years ago and still have it fresh in my mind. Lots of great ideas and fun.
Warriors of Fate, pic related.
I've been getting fullsets together to play on RetroPie and found mention of this. It's based on the Romance of the Three Kingdoms story and I love that shit so I gave it a try, though the English version has weird non-Chinese names and story.
Anyway it turned out to be really fun. There's heaps of dudes on the screen of once, a large variety of weapons, you can hold and throw easily, you can even ride a horse. There's 5 characters to choose from, and up to 3 players at once. The enemies are varied and they can sometimes override your hits so there's strategy in attacking. It looks like it'd be fun 2 player so I'm hanging out with a bud on Monday and we'll give it a go.
Not in the past year probably. But last four years for sure.
Metal Gear Solid
Snatcher
Policenauts
Phantasy Star IV

Crossed Swords. It's a medieval fantasy beatemup in the same vein as Knights of the Round, but...in first person. It works shockingly well and is loads of fun.

treasure's gba sequel (and astro boy) are really fun too. would recommend.

Holy shit! This looks fuckin' cool!
>>3189817
I guess it's technically third person but so are side scrolling beatemups, and in this one your dude is transparent so eeehhh
The magic spell does something different on each level to keep it fresh, and the weapons you can buy in the store change over time. It would get old without variety, but they knew that and it has just enough to make you want to keep playing.

oh shit. I think I saw this in an arcade when I was a kid. Gotta try it out

This one looks good
pic related has become one of my all time faves. I didn't play much NES as a youngster
