Anyone know any good tutorials about 65c816 assembly programming/hacking? I'm working on a SNES hack and it would be pretty helpful. Cheers m8s.

All the documentation you need to hack the SNES:

1) "Programming the 65816" by David Eyes and Ron Lichty
http://wiki.nesdev.com/w/images/7/76/Programmanual.pdf

2) Official SNES dev manual
http://www.romhacking.net/documents/226/

3) Anomie's SNES docs, more accurate hardware details than the dev manual
http://www.romhacking.net/?page=documents&category=&platform=&game=&author=548&perpage=20&level=&title=&desc=&docsearch=Go
All the software you need to start hacking the SNES:

1) Geiger's Snes9x debugging emulator
http://www.zophar.net/snes/geiger-s-snes9x-debugger.html

2) YY-CHR, or some other graphics editing program. More a convenience than absolutely required. Probably better utilities exist.
http://www.romhacking.net/utilities/119/

3) Assembler
I'll publish an assembler towards the middle of summer aimed at SNES dev, but for now you're on your won.

If you have any question regarding SNES hacking, ask away.

Re-arrangements of the original music in CD quality. So far I've only tried MMX and X2. The metroid stuff I listened to sounded a bit too far removed from the original but I haven't played it.

MSU-1 is a neat concept, I wish it was used for more stuff

So I guess all of those other cool alternative sprites were for naught.

Calm down eggman. We could always make another version of the game but with those sprites instead. You know, like how certain Pokemon are available in some games. We can even put new franchises that weren't represented in the first one.

Posting the backs I made. Is a shame about the shinys, but I suspected they just were pallete swaps too. Nice to see the other Drac getting so much love here.
>>
>>3170412
If you use less colors, you can "hide" sections of a sprite with a palette just by coloring them the same as other portions. Something simple with Scorpion there might be doable if you keep the hood up for example and just had a solid-colored mouth mask on the normal sprite go away to reveal the skull in the shiny.

The problem is obviously that "less colors" is a horrible prospect for 3-color sprite to resort to, so I would not recommend doing it except for very simple cases.
>>
>>3170412
Pretty cool man. I still can't decide which to use though. I'll definitely include the different sprites in the collage anyway.

Yknow, so we don't loose them again.

Should I make a straw poll or something?
>>
>>3170484
Yeah, that is a clever way to use the palletes and can get great results, but the loss of one color in an already very limited colored sprites, just for a rare shiny makes it kinda unappealing to me.
Scorpion would be a easy character to shinify anyway, you can put a green, black or gray palette on him and call it a day, like they did on the original games.

Also, how might I report a glitch to the hack's creator? I found a fairly glaring one.
>>
I've posted this here before, but do you guys know how I could make my game autoload to the main menu instead of playing the intro cutscene? Would it be as finding the code in the ROM that begins the main menu, finding the A, X, and Y values at this point, and then just editing the start of my ROM to load in these A, X, and Y values and jumping to the main menu code? I'm assuming not, but I really don't know; I'm just starting out with ROM hacking. Any tips would be greatly appreciated.

If you can find two other video game characters that can evolve into or from Klanoa then I'll put it in. Otherwise I'll just leave him in as one of the optional sprites alone.

I got into romhacking through I-Mockery back in 2003 or 2004, and the hacks reviewed there were bad and featured "edgy" content. like that. At some point they became some kind of inside jokes for a small part of the romhacking community, and making intentionally bad and edgy hacks, with obligatory cameos of Wilford Brimley, nazis, and AIDS was some sort of rule.
Guess some people still enjoy making and playing that kind of hacks, or maybe some people never understood those hacks were made ironically and didn't represent the romhacking community at all. Either way, seeing them on a comedy website is great, but seeing them in a serious site like Romhacking.net is awfull.

How to edit level titles?

Been working on a Donkey Kong Country 3 hack that plays like an "official" alternate version. Same difficulty, no cheap deaths, but replaces the more gimmicky levels with regular platforming ones, as well as changes the enemies/secrets on the other levels.

I'm using two different editors, but neither have the ability to change level titles. How would I do that? I've read something about using a HEX editor, but not sure which one to go with for ROM hacking nor how to find specific text to replace.
>>
>>3175713
DKC and DKC2 both stored all their text plainly, but DKC3 uses its own custom compression for text and a bunch of other things to save space fit even more stuff in.

There is no easy solution, but most likely approach would be reverse engineering the compression format and writing your own tool for compressing text. I don't know how complex the text compression is, but IIRC it's not as bad as the other two big compression types in the game.
>>
>>3175743
Damn, that's a shame to hear. I have zero programming skills, only know how to use hacking editors and design decent levels. New level names and dialog box text would have added to the experience. Maybe I will reach out to someone once all the levels are done and ready to go. Anyway, thanks for the info!

Duke and Doomguy and Gordon Freeman are important parts of gaming history. I'm not even big into shooting games but they shouldn't be neglected just because that's not our own inclination.

You have a good point there, makes sense to not have too many guys with guns, specially since the main Contra guys are literally generic Rambo and Dutch Schaeffer clones.
Most iconic villians I can think of are the waterfall's boss (pic related) and of course the big bad, Red Falcon, basically looks like a giant heart sorrounded by face huggers.

it technically isn't – an ultra-accurate emulator would be able to circumvent this, but such emulator will probably never exist because emulation-wise, it isn't wise to check/write the SRAM file every goddamn frame

>Flash Cart Warning
>Due to the cheats system implemented in the hack to prevent cheating, the game is saving to SRAM every frame. The Everdrive MD flash cart uses FRAM, which allows about 1 Billion writes. EEPROM cartridges allow a mere 100 thousand writes. The excessive writing to SRAM in this hack could shorten your cartridges life. Use at your own risk.

Sounds more like a REPRO cart warning.

Need a little more info than that.

What game? How did you go about figuring out what memory to edit? How did you edit the memory? What did you expect?

Perhaps instead of clearing out some letters you fucked the decompression (probably not)? Maybe you changed a pointer and now it's dereferencing junk (more likely)? Maybe the letters weren't on the layer you expected?

Without some clues I can't help.

ELF Files?

Fellas I'm trying to trick Quake 3 Revolution for the Playstation 2 into loading the wrong textures and to do this I'm swapping the offsets for files in the main archive that holds all the relevant data.

I'm going to be swapping things a lot so I don't want to make a new ISO each time I try another swap, so I'd like to just emulate the game from my HDD as a directory and I think that I need to make an ELF to do this.

I can't find a fucking thing about making an ELF.

How do I do what I want to do?
>>
>>3187390
Ah, the SLES / SLUS file is an ELF file, or I managed to run from ISO despite clicking run from ELF and picking it.

It's all rather mysterious.
>>
>>3187410
Seems it was running from the ELF, but also getting data from the ISO. When I set it to No Disc, PCSX2 gives me an error in the log over and over again: Can't load module sio2man

SIO2MAN.IRX is a file on the iso in the MODULES directory, which is also in the MODULES directory in the directory the ELF file is in.

What's the deal with running ELFs?

>>3187602
Do you know how to properly edit a PS2 ISO?

I just used Magic ISO, loaded the resulting ISO with PCSX2, used Fast Boot, and the swirly ambient lights played in the video and it told me to insert a PS2 disc.
>>
>>3187627
Dunno dude, as long as you don't mess too much with the files you shouldn't have any problems unless there are invisible files not listed in the TOC that get fucked in the remastering in which case you're screwed. I use Ultra ISO and I've modded PS2 games before, althought most were not the finished product so they had less protection schemes.
>>

True, the image is only meant to be a color reference.
>>
>>3187660
UltraISO gave me a disc image that PCSX2 can boot, what a pleasant surprise.

I went into a tile editor and combed it over, filling the tiles in all black, until I found the tiles used in the title. When it was in all black, it worked perfectly, but when I choose a different color, that's what happened. I'm guessing that I fucked up the decompression somehow. 2bh I don't know much about ROM hacking (I'm doing it out of necessity to make my RPG Maker 2 game into a standalone ROM) I just kind of play with it and see what happens.

I don't know what style you're trying to mimic or your limitations, but if you remove the black edge you can influence the shape. Influencing it well is another problem entirely that I'm not 100% on though.

I made the top of her hair expand outward so the left side blended in more, filled the shape out onto the edges in places, and tried to give her more of a hip thrust with a little curl on the bottom of her skirt without making it blunt so I put the edge of the corner on the inside to avoid a perceived thickening of the shape.

In my opinion you already have a good start, but yeah, there is room for some improvement.
Tips I could give you:

Not exactly pixel related:
>You need to get a better grasp on perspective. You have a full front face with 3/4 eyes there. Go for one or the other, but don't mix them. Usually 3/4 is better since a front face can look too simetrical and it looks less interesting.
>Same with her skirt, legs are up, so you probably get to see the bottom or "back" of her skirt.
>More dynamic lines. Use more curves and less straight lines when you make poses like that. Always start with a stick man, but one made with curves, not straight lines.
>Sometimes less is more. Specially on small art, sometimes you have to miss a bit of detail. For example, I ignored the top border of the glasses, but they are still readable. Same with the buttons on her shir, they are small so they probably would go unnoticeable when watching her from too far, so I don't need to draw everything.

Pixel art related:
>Don't be afraid of using a little bit of antialiasing to soften some lines, and don't be afraid to use a little bit of dithering for shadows. Don't abuse too much of them, specially if the colors you are using aren't too similar.

Yous keep doing pixel art, and redo an old work once on a while. It helps a lot to see how you can improve it, and how much you have improved at it too.

Had a feeling that'd be the one. I've heard great things. But I also considered saving the best for last. In any case, does Hyper require any advanced techniques? I know Redesign will. Super Zeromission called for some tough shit too, but I was having to use a keyboard at the time and gave up out of frustration. So the less advanced stuff the better.

I guess I just want a genuine new Super Metroid with a unique map.
>>
>>3206145
Hyper TECHNICALLY calls for advanced techs, but because it's using the Project Base engine, it's made a lot easier.
For example, you can mockball on demand by just holding run while in morphball mode (after getting spring ball), and you're able to keep a speedboost going under some of the most ridiculous circumstances, just by jumping (movement speed is preserved when landing, including speed booster state, even if you come to a full stop during the jump, so long as you're holding left or right when you land.)

As for Redesign, if you're playing Axiel Edition, the reliance on advanced techs is lessened dramatically.

I've played both on keyboard (I don't even have a PC controller) and got through them just fine, but that's me.
>>
>>3206463
>Axiel Edition
I'm getting flashbacks of Tourian.
The horrors. Oh god the horrors.
>>
>>3206820

That's another thing: I've got about a 50/50 split of people telling me which is better between Redesign and Axeil. Can't decide which one to play.
>>
>>3207560
Axeil is the definitive version of the game according to the author, but there are some who believe the changes he made to make the game easier and more accessible ruined it. I think the changes made it into a better hack.

I personally love the idea of a /vr/ collab. All it would take is a project leader who knows when to throw out awful ideas like Guy Fawkes coins and Shoop da Whoop Bullet Bills. I even had this idea for a SMW collab that I think would be really neat and a great showcase of SMW hacking's strenghts, but people would have to be interested first.

>>3214591
The one on the SMWiki is fine for the basics: http://www.smwiki.net/wiki/Tutorial:Basic_Overworld_Editing

Aside from that, I can give you a tip: design an overworld as a whole rather than one world at a time. This does wonders for the overall overworld and makes it feel more cohesive, but also makes it much easier and fun to design. It'll be much easier to adjust things if you need to change something after all, and give you plenty of opportunities to plan out shortcuts like in the original SMW.

This. Star Road's biggest problem is that the environments sacrifice flow for aesthetic, with lots of detailed, angular polygonal shapes making up the stages.

Mario 64's physics simply aren't meant for the kind of layouts Star Road has, and so Mario trips over shit all the time, gets shoved downwards when touching a shoreline, and all kinds of other infuriating things.

The camera. Mario 64's levels were designed with the camera in mind. Star Road has areas like the big tree in Large Leaf Forest where it's just completely fucked.

It's still a really fun hack, though.
>>
My biggest problem with Star Road is that it doesn't take the lack of depth perception availability into account in a lot of places.
>>
>>3232519
I don't like the custom camera in version 1.2, s I use 1.1. Though I haven't tried 1.2 that much to be honest.
In 1.1 if I use the lakitu camera in water and air and mario camera everywhere else I never have many problems, with some exceptions here and there.

>>3232401
While I agree with you, it generally isn't a big deal.

I'm not saying the hack doesn't have those problems, it's just that they don't seem to be considered like that.

>>3232807
Do you have any specific part of the game in mind?
>>
can anyone explain to me how hex editing works and how I can understand what to do when looking at them in a hex editor or anything in general that is involved with using hex decimals. I know the numbers that isn't hard but just using them is.

Well, true. I can't call Star Road a bad game, just a flawed one. From a technical standpoint I have to give props nonetheless because the work done to the game is incredible.

Star Road is fun, but I've never been able to bring myself to finish it.
>>
>>3233092
If they're using them, how are they dead? I'm pretty sure this argument is pretty much the same as people complaining about learning languages like Latin or Greek, including the same flaws. Consider it gives you knowledge of how things work. Editing an old game isn't a bad concept by itself either.
Is it bad that I like to get baited?

>>3233138
Star Road 2 seems to have even more detailed models from what we've seen so far. Do you think that aspect can be improved?
>>
>>3233148
> Do you think that aspect can be improved?

I would hope so.
>>
>>3232960
In a rom file, the numbers can either be code or data.

When the machine reads code, it reads it pretty much from left to right, top to bottom, automatically going to the next number after reading the current one (unless it is told to branch or jump somewhere else in memory)

It starts by reading a byte and interpretting it as an instruction. The instruction it represents depends on the system. Then, the next few bytes are arguments for that instruction. The amount of arguments is depending on the instruction and the current mode the machine is at, among other things.

Data is, well, data. Usually, tables of data. Some instructions will want data from an address, offset by the value in a register. The use of data is completely dependant on the context.

Usually, you'll want to look at a disassembly or a ROM and RAM Map, prefferably both, to make your life a lot easier. If those don't exist, you're probably going to have to experiment.

Posting this here too.

I don't know if anyone is interested in this, but I mashed a couple of romhacks together for Link's Awakening DX.

The end result is a "decensored" version, with translated photo album photos, the font from the Oracle games, the ability to skip entire text box conversations by pressing the B button, and a semi-restored screen warp glitch through opening the map during a screen transition.

Download it here: http://www.mediafire.com/download/nhwi7bwmf5j47x5/

It combines these romhacks:
http://www.romhacking.net/hacks/612/
http://www.romhacking.net/hacks/927/
http://www.romhacking.net/hacks/2361/
and some minor hex editing for the text skip and restored screen warp glitch (found by some dude on the jul/rustedlogic forums, it's been ages and I lost the link to the post).

Pic Related: Used the screen warp glitch to get to the photo house as soon as I got my sword.

The screen warp is a little easier to pull off, as the map screen can be opened at any time you're not in a menu. Different timing during the screen transition changes how close the the screen edge you are on the screen you warp to. It's VERY easy to get stuck in scenery.

There may be other glitches. Hopefully someone else will like this.

Not this poster but I feel I should add, endianness is a concept you have to know well when hex-editing just about any console. The order of bytes in a multi-byte number can either put the most significant byte first (Big Endian) or the least significant first (Little Endian).

So if you have a number whose range can go above 256, ie needs more than 1 byte, it has to be looked at in a certain order.
example: The decimal number 256 would appear as 01 00 hex in Big Endian, which is what you'd consider normal, but Little Endian is actually more common, and would arrange the two bytes as 00 01!

Assemblers will sort it out for you so you don't need to think of it unless you're hex editing most of the time, but the assembler's also not gonna stop you from reading/writing the individual bytes at their locations in the wrong order if you are working with them without taking the 16-bits as a whole and keeping it 16-bit for everything you do with it (which you can't do on 8-bit consoles anyway - you HAVE to work with them separately).

All that while ignoring Ghideon Zhi's offer to take over the project.

If anyone wants to cringe, here's a link. Last two pages: http://www.romhacking.net/forum/index.php/topic,20026.40.html

I know I'm being too entitled, but I'm amazed at some people's unwillingness to cooperate and make teams when dealing with complex projects. Or Mieu from Tales of the Abyss could evolve into King of Sorrow since they both look similar. But Abyss isn't retro so?

It would be cool if there was an editor that let you make your own subgames, with options for portrait dialogue, the ability to change Kirby's properties and sprites. Like, you could make a Super Star Ultra de-make or make a brand new game where you play as Dedede or Gooey something.
>>
>>3262502
Yeah sorry it can't be saved unless you just give everyone fixed stats permanently (or make all growths the same and have only the base stats be different, but it's the same effect).

Ultimately it's a better use of time to make the dogshit-growths jobs have better growths, with the intent to make even 'wrong' levels worthwhile in some way - ie make sure it's not *strictly* better to level in one of the 'good' jobs because they get substantial benefits in other attributes (that ideally the same type of character makes use of).

So Soldier, Thief, Archer and Arcanist are the main beneficiaries in my current patch. Soldier gets to be the Everyman, who has 2nd~3rd best stats among Hume jobs in each category (a higher total than most but the game rewards specialization above all). Thief get Ninja speed and actually good Defense. Archers get just under Hunter in Attack and Speed but also get the big magic defense of a spellcaster. Arcanists get buffed to at least TIE with the previous second-slowest assholes in the game and get competitive magick growth to not fall behind other nukers.

I also replaced some of the useless Soldier abilities with some very basic level magic (cure, fire/thunder/ice) to make use of their new magic stat (could work well with Frenzy Magick). Thieves replace Steal Gil with a 50% accurate Mug Gil that deals 200% damage instead of half - meaning that with Tranq or stopped/sleeped enemies, the job can actually contribute some damage.

What are your favorite classic Mega Man romhacks? If you had to name ONE favourite, -complete- romhack per entry, which one would they be? As if you were to play 1-6 in order, just using romhacks instead, with redesigned staged (and hopefully bosses AI and weapons too).

Mine are:

MM1: Haven't tried much of them, but I would really appreciate one that fixes MM1's flaws that were fixed from MM2 onwards, like falling at infinite speed when you walk off a ledge instead of jump.
MM2: Probably "No Constancy".
MM3: I'm inclined to say "MM3 Improvement" even if it doesn't add much new just because it was so necessary. Otherwise, probably "Burst Chaser".
MM4: "Minus Infinity", no contest.
MM5: "Air Slide". Mostly because of the redesigned stages, weapons and boss AI. It takes all the underdeveloped potential from the original game and makes something better with them (GravityMan stage!).
MM6: Undecided between "Skype" and "Innocent" because I haven't finished either.

.dat is a generic extension, like .bin
It could be anything. I don't know the game, but as with most games, unless it's been already reverse engineered, you'll need to figure out the format by yourself. The extension doesn't actually mean anything, you could call an .mp3 "image.png" and it wouldn't change anything. The extension is just to let you know what the files are supposed to be, and if it's a file you shouldn't be looking at nobody would bother with it. Or a file that isn't specific enough I guess.
