Garage sale/Flea Market/Thrift store pickups/hauls.
Post em here, because it's that's time of year!
Sun is shining, people putting up signs, and mothers getting rid of their sons video games.
Went to a local thrift where I rarely find games and say a fucked up Dreamcast for $5 along with an assortment of controllers.
Ended up finding a bunch of NES/SNES/N64/Genesis games. Many of them were beat up, sport games, or games I already owned, but ended up with pic related for $6.
I've definitely had better days, but it's nice getting decent games for cheap.

I hadn't had a decent retro find in months until a couple of weeks ago when I scored this lot for $20. Maybe I'll get lucky at the flea market again tomorrow.
>>
Found an import of Chocobo's Dungeon 2 with a handwritten note inside for progressions, can't read any of the kanji but got it for $10
>>
I found Conker's Bad Fur Day in mint condition at the flea market and I bought it for 5$.

Fuck. I have some luck and find Sonic Wings and Wild Guns, both bootlegs for 2 dollars each one
>>
I'm going to a flea market and a bunch of tag sales tomorrow, hopefully I'll have something to report back here then.

Bought pic related today on a fleamarket, 100€ for everything, which is quite the deal considering Phantasy Star 4 alone goes for 150+ around here. Pretty happy about that. Did I do good?

The guy, clearly a reseller scum, also hat Demon's Crest CIB for 100€ (!!!). Until my stupid ass told him that the cart by itself goes for 100, so he looked it up and saw that CIB goes for around 500-800. Needless to say he put the game back in his van.... I hat myself for that....

I got these for $90 maple bucks about 2 weeks ago. The guy was right on too. I only stopped by to buy some cheap amiibos and then he mentioned NES games. Tag sales/flea market sucked today, but I did pick up these two interesting fellows at Goodwill, practically NIB too. Just $5.

The Mario one amused me, and I like collecing retro floppy disc games. The electronics kit, while not exactly /vr/ related, is pretty cool. Comes with an Arduino board, breadboard, and tons of electronic components, will come in handy when experimenting with some electronic components in the future.

I wonder how much longer people will be able to find cheap retro games at yard sales and flea markets? There are millions of copies, yes, but it's still a finite number, even smaller when you consider the number of games that have been lost or simply won't be sold at those venues. Eventually, the majority of retro games will be in the hands of collectors who know their value.
>>
I don't care to take a picture, but today I got an Atari 2600 with 37 games(only double is Combat) and a set of wireless joysticks in the box. The system is dusty, but the games all look great. I've never tried the wireless joysticks, but I bet they suck. Probably gonna end up selling or trading them. Paid twenty.

About a month ago I got Castlevania, Contra, Turtles 3, and Mario World for thirty bucks at a Goodwill.

Used one of those buy, sell, trade apps, saw someone selling this top loader for $90, I messaged the guy, guy was interested in trading it for an N64 instead. So I found someone selling a loose N64 for $15, cleaned it up, added an extra controller and ac adapter/av cables I had and traded it for the top loader. Found a megaman X3 cart in a box of games going for $20 at a local garage sale. I insisted the woman take $40. I imagine she's wondering just what was so valuable in her kid's old video games. The label is a bit worn but is in good shape otherwise.

You imply that parents always listen to what their children ask of them. Many times I've heard stories where the parent says something along the lines of "oh, they're at college now so they don't need these anymore."

>Most likely hes one of those fucknuts who leaves boxes of shit at his parents when they move out. She probably aked him to take his junk multiple times.

Why is it an issue? He could have not given her any extra money and just paid the 20 she was asking. If someone puts a price on something without knowing how much it's actually worth, that's nobody's problem but the seller's. They didn't bother to check how much it was worth, the buyer is in no way at fault for paying the asking price. He did more than he should have in this situation by paying her more than she wanted.

Thrift stores in my area never have retro vidya for sale. I imagine there's some reseller fucker that has worked a deal with them to buy all of their games off them as soon as they take them in.

And I spent a whole day visiting flea markets in my area, must have gone to 5 or 6. All of them had the same fodder, tons of overpriced shit and useless sports games. Absolutely terrible. I remember going to a flea market 15 years ago, or so, and nabbing sealed copies of StarFox and A Link to the Past for like 10 bucks each. I wish I could go back, knowing what I know now.

I'm in the same boat. We're pretty much fucked.

Everything in Toronto and the GTA is usually snatched up by one of the million reseller stores. Really your best bet is to go to garage sales early and hope you find something. The bigger the venue, the more luck you'll have, but even then it's insanely slim. Hell every now and then I ask if they even had games at the beginning, because nothing feels worse than going to one of those things only to find out they never had games to begin with.

There's a ton of thrift stores in Toronto, but I don't know what their prices are, or how we'll stocked they are.

If any of your buddies are into this kind of thing, ask them to help you out. You go to one sale, they go to another. Last year I found jack shit at sales, was pretty demoralizing tbqh famalam.

Heroin addiction is actually an epidemic in NY, including Long Island, which is, you know, rich asshats. Other than that, the town is mostly artists, actors, and two of Hitler's decedents. Nephews, I think. I'm not even kidding

I think it depends on staff. I've seen stores put cart based games out alot more recently but for a while there nothing at all on cart dropped. How is that edgy in any way?
Do you not understand how that word works?
$50 for a box of low end NES games, and not to mention many doubles of the same game, is pretty trash.
There are three titles that are blinded by light and if one of those games is stupidly expensive warranting the purchase because the guy wouldn't sell the games individually, then that deal is incredibly stupid.

Photoshop suggests they're probably pretty low tier as well. But if he bought them for resale, which is almost certain then he probably hopes over time he can raise the prices and at least make his money back. After all every less copy on the market is a bit more rarity. Isn't that how those people think?

Dear Gods of Summer Garage Sales:

Please let there be many retro games for sale, from those who do not know their true value.

Please let the scalpers and guys running the 3 (THREE) fucking retro game stores in town not get to them first, or the night before...

Please help me to find Link's Awakening DX, so I can undo what I did 11 years ago.

Amen... break.

Amen.

Also, I wonder if it'll even get to the point where the scalpers have basically all of the supply, thereby causing people to lose interest. I mean the scalpers only have a business if other people are interested in buying stuff. But if the only people buying stuff are scalpers, then I imagine business would dry up pretty quick.

Also, in a couple of the used games stores that used to have a lot of retro stuff, I've noticed they've dialed back. They don't have as much as they used to.

Amen to that, brother.

Oh lord of /vr/, let me find some of my old game boy/gba games again, that i may replace them after my little brother sold them for drug money.

May i find Cubeavore again, after my sister did loan it to her asshat boyfriend, who then sold it for drugs.

May i find Mystical Ninja once again, that i may play that which cannot be emulated, and lay a holy vengeance upon my little brother for selling my N64 and all games for a dimebag.

Amen.

>scalpers have all the supply.
I feel like that might... never happen, very very slim chance yes if you exclude private collections. In including them, I'm implying that the private collections COULD at some point be bought by someone, or stolen, etc. that then makes them available to the public/scalpers/etc.

On the other hand, in a general public availability situation, think about this way: while there's obviously many that will be picked up by scalpers, the "natural process", or whatever bullshit, should make it so that finding old games at garage sales for appropriate/steal prices actually happens, and denies the scalpers to get them.

idk, just my thoughts.

>dialed back, not as much as they used to

I feel that it might be A. the stock available is "running low" (as stupid as that sounds), as in, the available stock that they can buy, along with the stock that's not in private hands (ie. collectors, or people who have not yet sold them off), or

B. it could just be your region. Locally, there's at least 3-4 fucking retro game stores, and only 1 is decently priced (not totally overcharging), which is where I got my Wavebird + Dongle for 15$CAD.

Jej, hello, I am in the same boat, except I know where to go. 5 mins from me is a Salvation Army and Value Village, and the GGGS happens every year, so looking forward to that, along with the CCGS (both community garage sales).

IMO, locally at least (National Capital Region), looking on Kijiji is kinda worthless, in a sense. I have found some good deals on controllers and hardware in general, also a few games (got jewed out of a NFR OOT cart, couldn't back down so now I have 2xOOT, 1.0 and 1.2), but most of the time listings are overpriced, or are gone so fast you'd miss even seeing them originally, due to the large number of fucking reseller stores here.

Holy shit where?

I'm in Toronto, and their is one store that's pretty fair, especially when it comes to consoles. Everywhere else in Toronto though ranges from "kind of overpriced" to "Who the hell do you expect is going to buy this?". Also there's a shit ton of these stores now. I remember back when A&C was the only real one, but now you can't fart without hitting one.

I disappointed the Gods today.

I was on the hunt for some original Xbox titles, and found a copy of Halo and the console for $30, but I passed it up out of fear it wouldn't work. Every other bit of my day was filled with sports games. Sucked it up and bought a non-retro game today, but when I got home, the disc was unreadable.

I hope they forgive me by June.

So I posted >>3180982. Anyway, Ottawa, and I was at the Great Glebe Garage Sale (GGGS, if you're familiar, otherwise it's basically massive garage sale within the Glebe community). Walking towards Bank St. to try and avoid the massive amounts of people in-between streets.

Come across Chumleighs (.com), and inside there it was, behind the counter, either 15 or 20$, but by far the best purchase I made that day. I love using it from across my room to play GC games, especially since my wired has a fucky C-Stick that I need to reseat or replace.

>Kijiji + Craigslist RSS
It's a neat setup, but personally, I've kinda stopped collecting, or searching for stuff on a regular basis, just because I have so much that I haven't played yet, and am also waiting for GS season in hopes of some lucky finds, or whatnot.

So whose dick do I have to suck to get a decent N64 controller with a nice, original stick? Any advice? Just get lucky with yard sales and shit?

The new steel-on-teflon reproductions look much better than the garbage "GCN style" replacement sticks that are out there, but they aren't for sale yet.
>>
>>3183865

I've never had a problem finding an oldschool N64 controller at my local gaming store..

Why don't you check yours, or if that doesn't work out then maybe check a pawnshop or something.
>>
>>3183891
I've checked four stores in my area, they are all selling the new condition $10 chinese "retro game controller". Some of the store owners say that 1st party controllers just don't come through (nobody trades them in), and other stores have a handful of them in awful condition. At any rate, the owner almost always acknowledges to me that the 3rd party stuff is junk.

Maybe I should just order a Hori and call it a day.
>>
Talked to some guy on Offer Up who was selling Banjo Tooie and Yoshi's Story which was what I wanted the most.
It was originally $40 but he wants me to trade my copy of Chibi Robo for them both. Don't really care for Chibi Robo and don't gain anything from selling it, so might as well trade it for a game I actually care about and give the guy a game he wants.

Only the good shit. Case in point: they had a copy of FFVII sitting near the register, and when I asked about it they told me it wasn't for sale. I complained and said if it wasn't for sale it shouldn't be visible to customers. The manager came over, explained they would sell it online, and gave me half off my purchase.

Fuck Goodwill.
>>
There's 4 Goodwills all within 30 minutes of my house. Plus a big Donation Center and two other stores and a Salvation Army an hour away. And there's 3 pawn shops, a few thrift stores, a flea market, and a retro vidya store in my town, again no further than 6 miles from my home.

And yet, the only jackpot I EVER found was a PS1 and two controllers for $30 at the nearest Goodwill, and a guy had brought in all of his old DVDs and 6th gen games that same day, so I scored The MGS Essential Collection without the carton and some other PS2 shit. Otherwise it's barebones as hell around here. Most people are aware of value and pull reseller shit on CL. The retro store uses some system that doesn't account for condition and is littered with rape prices, making it pointless since I can buy anything they'd have online, faster, and for the same/lower prices.

Roughly. As long as you stay away from the reseller tourist traps vidya is dirt cheap here. Thanks to the Wii GCs are mostly worthless. But $8 for 4 like new controllers is a good deal. The gbp is an added bonus. The console. Well it doesn't waste that much space.
>>
>>3192915
How cheap are you talking? I just got into famicom and super famicom recently and from what I've seen on eBay a cheap famicom game is around 2-3 bucks, super famicom around 5-6. I've never paid more than $1 for a second hand FC/SFC game. But that means digging through shit at flea markets and being limited to what I find.
