What retro games feel and look the most like modern indie games?
I'm not talking about classic games that have influenced indie games, many indie games start out as tributes to retro games but in the long run screw up certain styles or elements of the games that originally inspired them and thus turn into something unique - something which is now refered to as the indie style. So I'm asking about retro games that feature this indie style before the indie style became a thing.
Enemy - Tempest of Violence for the Amiga is one such game.

Wow. This feels like an experimental indie game made by one person who played Flashback a lot as a kid, and now decided to experiment with smooth animation and enviromental storytelling.
I'd say Lemmings or Worms.
Laser Light, perhaps?

Ihatovo Monogtari is an artsy "walking simulator" on the Super Famicom. Doesn't get much more indie.

The whole cinematic platformer gerne, really. Prince of Persia, Another World, Flashback, Heart of Darkness and Oddworld. They are so indie, I'm surprised no indie developer picked up the genre.

Thanks for posting that. When I watched someone stream Environmental Station Alpha on twitch, it really reminded me of something with its setting and graphics. Now I know what it was reminding me of.

I don't think anyone really cares about it, but there actually was a German project a few years ago.

A remake of sorts were great.
There is an actual indie game that reminds me of it, Capsized, but it's much more action oriented.

I love that guys art. That super deformed style of his translates really well from old instruction manual enemies to digital art.
Its not vr, but he did stuff for Cortex Command as well, but we all know how that game turned out. Even though it was never really finished it was still a fun idea.
