Thought's on Westone's Wonder Boy series versus Hudson's Adventure Island? The first games are almost exactly the same with a few changes here and there, but Wonder Boy went in a completely different direction with Zelda 2 style RPG platforming where as Hudson mostly kept Adventure Island the same throughout
Monster Land series is best. Adventure Island series can't compare
What's the best way to play the Wonder Boy series? Sega Ages 2500 Series Vol. 29: Monster World Complete Collection for the PS2 sounds swell.

Sure if you can read Japanese or don't care about reading the clues in the ARPG games

That is indeed the best way, if you don't mind Japanese. It even comes with every console version of each game, in-game manuals, and artwork. I have all of the games on my modded wii, but the wii version of monster land 1 has an overly sensitive magic button.
