Ken's Labyrinth. By the guy who made the Build engine(Duke3D). It's like Wolf3D, but has a lot more going on, and much more difficulty. I'm surprised no one ever mentions it or even remembers it.

I went through it and it's one of the most autistic games I've ever played, in a sort of weird, but rewarding way.

The OST is also great, has kind of a Japanese feel to it which I really like but we know for sure it's western so I guess Ken took inspiration from the right places, at least to my likings.

I remember Ken's Labyrinth. I used to have the "Welcome to Ken's Labyrinth!" voice clip as my Windows startup sound.

I enjoyed playing Ken back in the day, and it has some creative stuff, but man, it can also be super annoying. It's definitely much more difficult than Wolf, no doubt about it, but it's the game that pops into my head when people complain about "maze-like" old-school maps being too confusing (despite being barely maze-like at all).

Ken's Labyrinth, on the other hand, has legit mazes, like the kind that are hard enough to solve when you're looking at them top-down and using a pen and paper. Pic related, just look at those later levels.

Thief has an emphasis on stealth but it does qualify as a first person and shooter in that you shoot things with a bow to progress through the levels.

Another first person shooter I like which has a bow in it is Turok, which is a lot more like doom or quake.

Space Hulk: Vengeance of the Blood Angels

Well worth getting 4DO and a rom to get this going (I think the PC version is good too though)

Its not 100% fps, there is a RTS element to it and if you play it like its just another FPS you will die.

Awesome music/sound design, scary as fuck, can get pretty gory with body parts and blood filling up a whole room ( I recall as a kid just holding off one area with my terminators and just filling the room with gibs and blood), graphics are pretty good, can get scary as fuck. Probably my favorite game that came out on the 3DO

Outlaws (revolver second fire, i dont need anything else)
multiplayer was hella fun too.
>>2974538
yeah fuck the movies, the SW universe has a lot of charm and spawned several great games, retro and modern (in case you were implying that it died with DF1 for you)
start with dark forces 2
>>
fuck im trying to remember one, not even sure if /vr/ but around 1999/2000

it was for PC, you had leg movement, aim movement, and head move, all 3 separate, kinda like red dead revolver with more movements actually

its a futuristic, probably dystopian theme,
you had some tech armor that could extrude wings to hover a little over the battle field, and im not sure if the enemies were non-human but probably too.

name, i vaguely recalled it resembled OUTLIVE OUTLAST OUTCAST, but neither names finds me an old FPS (its not outlaws, neither 2013's outlast, neither retro RTS Outline)
>>
>>2977265

The production quality for Realms is awesome across the board. Combat is pretty ropey (enemies are really dumb) and puzzles range from average to "lol, here's another maze", but they did such a good job with the atmosphere that I love playing it.

Love the look of the hand-drawn maps and readables, too.

The only thing I don't really like is the actual engine. The quality of the textures and the shadows/lights baked into them is kind of offset by the bizzarre flickering, jagged banding all over the place and general weirdness of the renderer. Even the 3 year older System Shock engine feels better.

Sprites from 1995, sounds and textures from early 2000's, running on tech from ~1994 in a game released in 1997 is what it all feels like to me.

hum, i played jk when it was already somewhat old, lil before jedi outcast release, and damn, even with many communities still active around jk1, i dont recall anything of the sort, u know why, thre was just too many maps, and too many good ones, even single player levels, every other guy always have their small list of best lvls, but theres no unanimous levesl that appear on everybody's list.

best thing is probably going on massassi temple and jkhub, list by score or downloads, check all photos for each map, pretty much download a few dozen, and cycle thru them while sparing with friends, everybody exploring the maps together you quick know if its boring one and move on, just make the winning score very low, so one can kill everyone and load the next map

Strife
Tekwar

If you haven't played these (and Dark Forces), you achieve eternal pleb status
>>
>>2987671

>>
>>2979432

Theyre completely dissimilar games but both are ok. Original Shadow Warrior is motherfuck hard and racist as fuck in CHING CHONG NIP NONG NONG style, but once you get the hang of it it is quite enjoyable. The trick to the game is that your light armaments are basically shit garbage that wont kill enemies fast enough to save you in a real fight, they are strictly for cleaning up trash. So the start is rough. Once you get ammo for the nade launcher and rocket launcher, the game really starts to shine.

new Shadow Warrior is a lot less racist and also a lot less hard, but not really the same sort of game at all. instead of being lightning fast and all about explosives, it's mid-paced and all about the sword.
>>
Does anyone actually enjoy Mysteries of the Sith? On top of pulling the ol' Raiden maneuver on you, even when you play as Kyle he's weak as shit compared to the end of JK, just to make the game a bit harder. Instead of FMV, or even sprite cutscenes like DF, it has astonishingly fuck ugly early 3d cutscenes. It ditches the regular boss fights which were one of the most enjoyable things in JK and started the series trend of just throwing a shitton of boring lightsaber mooks at you in lieu of creating opponents that are actually fun to fight. Level design sucks and hardly ever feels Star-Warsy, compared to JK it's just a bunch of boxy rooms with fuck all in them. The force leveling system is even weaker than in JK, hope you didn't want to use any useful attack spells because you're gonna need healing. A lot. Did I mention the game is fuck hard? The last three levels of this game are far and away more difficult than anything else in the franchise. The real mystery is how they thought anybody could beat Dark Mara on the hardest difficulty without glitching her AI, and she's not even the final boss of the game.

In addition, those are the only three levels in the game that are actually relevant to the Sith in any way shape or form. The plot is pretty much nonexistent and schizophrenic as shit with Kyle suddenly fucking off to Dromund Kaas for no earthly reason and Mara basically being left to fuck around doing fetch quests for assholes for half the game that even she complains about having to do. The guys who made Outlaws made this?
>>
>>2987823
>The trick to the game is that your light armaments are basically shit garbage that wont kill enemies fast enough to save you in a real fight, they are strictly for cleaning up trash. So the start is rough.
Nigga did you forget about the sword? It kills most basic enemies in a slash or two and is like a million times better than all the basic guns put together.

At the start of Metal Gear Solid 2 you play as Snake, who is bad ass and also the protagonist of the first game. Then a few levels in they pull a switcheroo on you and you play as some bitch ass called Raiden for the rest of the game. It kind of works in MGS2 because the whole game is about fucking with the player's expectations, doesn't work in MotS because MotS isn't about anything whatsoever.

To be fair the FMV cutscenes were probably really expensive to make, some of the CG in them has even held up alright, and I can understand why that wasn't an option for an expansion pack. I wouldn't mind the ugly ass cutscenes so much if not for the fact that they are all completely pointless because nothing in the plot has anything to do with anything else, everything they convey could have been accomplished more elegantly with mission objective splash screens a la DF.

It got taken down because the creator was hit with a cease-and-desist. By a company he'd previously worked for that bought the IP fully aware that there was a nearly finished port in the making made by a person they know, so now it'll be commercially released soon enough and with greater authenticity due to the dev(s) having source code access. The exact same thing happened with the same people (and actually the same new engine) for the recent Turok re-release.

There are still some copies of the Powerslave Ex beta floating around though.

It's not *good*, but it's different. Like if Duke Nukem had a hub-based mission selection using metro trains;

It had some ideas ahead of its time (civilians, civvie police), but the problem is that the police would only respond if *you* started shooting. And you'd get in trouble for blasting them back.

On the plus side, fat William Shatner

That's because it was meant to be the sequel to the Hugo's House of Horrors trilogy and they completely changed format and target audience. They had no idea what they were doing and weren't very good at it.

Hard game though. I had a lot of fun with it!

Did anyone else every play this magnificent masterpiece? It had mechanics that modern FPS are still trying to emulate! And that weapon set, holy shit. A gun that can create blackholes? Also, secondary fire options well before Perfect Dark came around.
>>
>>2993241
I played it several years back. The only interesting touch I can remember were those magnetic boots which allowed walking on the outer hull of a ship, effectively inverting walls/ceilings. Only a few levels featured that though, in a mostly mediocre game.

Secondary fire was definitely older than Honor Guard. Marathon had it. Heretic too, kind of. DF had it (albeit only on two weapons that I can recall), Jedi Knight had it on a couple more. Also, and presumably this is where Honor Guard devs got the idea, Unreal. I do like Honor Guard but there's nothing great about it, it most comes off like a Trek themed TC of Unreal which is basically exactly what it is. I enjoy it because I'm a huge Trek nerd and the devs definitely put some work into the look & feel, not because it's really good game. Better than Elite Farce though
>>
>>2993561
I played a lot of Heretic and don't remember any secondary fire, just the upgraded fire from the tome of power. Never played Marathon and I only had the demo of Dark Forces unfortunately. This was my first exposure to it.

Those boots were awesome and the multiplayer was amazing. The campaign was long but not fantastic. It was all about the multiplayer. The boots and the tricorder were both extremely useful. I also used to play the space levels, get a suit, get outside, turn off the boots and snipe people from MILES away from the station. Levels with both gravity and zero-G were fantastic.
>>
>>2993952
I think he's talking about the Tomes of Power in Heretic, that change the weapons' firing mode

>Pathways Into Darkness

Love and hate this one. Feels way ahead of its time desu, the next sort of attempt to reconcile adventure gaming with FPS wouldn't be made till...probably Trespasser but in a completely different way...and the FPS/RPG as we know it was still a decade away. Its style of storytelling is also quite cool and has aged a lot better than that of Marathon series, for example. Suffers from being motherfucking slow as balls and having a time limit. I'd love to see someone take the concept on today with a proper 3D engine and less bland "ye find yeself in yon labyrinth" tedious ass dungeon. At least in Wolfenstein you could move through the boring mazes as a decent clip.

The time limit was quite merciful, I believe. On my first play I had 30 game hours left in the end. It was just contributing to the overall immersion, i.e. "something is going on while you wander the dungeons!".
>>
>>3007951

It depends how much you rest, really. The limit counts down real time while you play, but at like 8x real time while you rest. Since resting is the only way to regain health for pretty much the entire first third of the game and even once you do start to get healing potions the difficulty ramps up big time with Oozes and Nightmares, it's possible to fritter away loads of time sleeping if you suck at dodging.

I do kind of like the time limit in theory, it's the kind of atmospheric touch that gets focus-grouped right out of modern games for the sake of bad players. My problem with it is more the message it sends to the player, combined with how god damn slow the dude moves, is "you need to hurry", when really hurrying is just likely to get you into fights you can't win without taking lots of damage, and the game rewards a much more methodical playstyle.
