We discuss non-Nintendo Power /vr/-era gaming magazines...

AKA our internet before the internet became a thing...
>>

I wish there were more PDFs floating around of those old magazines like EGM and GameFan.

I know of retromags, I just wish they had more. I have every Nintendo Power beginning with 1 and going all the way into the year 2000, but I'm still missing the vast majority from other mags.

Man, has so much changed in 14 months.
>>
>>2914446
Wow! Look at that ACTUAL SCREENSHOT!!!

Also, oooooooh man, info on the juggernaut of a console, the M2.

It's only thing missing is the Siemen's EuroSystem!
>>
I'd love to find scans of Super Play and SuperXS. Both UK mags for Nintendo.
>>
>>2913991
Oh God, that reminds me of a turbo-autist on the Zephr's Domain forum that swore up and down the N64 was never codenamed the Ultra 64, even with OVERWHELMING evidence to the contrary.

He held on desperately this little image of an old Japanese patent that said N64.

I mean we have the "PSX was never shorthand for Playstation" troll and the "Famicom is impossible to clone" but this autismo really took the cake.
>>
>>2914626
>"PSX was never shorthand for Playstation"

Its funny. Because in magazines it was known as the PSX before Sony came out with that DVD device called the PSX. But I've always called it the PS1 in real life. To which Sony came out with the small PSone.
>>
I actually have this issue somewhere
>>
>>2913991
I loved Electronic Gaming Monthly as a kid. I would read every issue cover to cover multiple times.

Just this weekend I went back and read two of their old issues, the 150th issue with their list of the 100 best games of all time (they put Super Metroid at #1) and Seanbaby's 20 worst games of all time (featuring Custer's Revenge!), and the issue they put out a year later featuring the 10 "naughtiest" games of all time. I was confused by many things that were said. I'm glad I never asked my mom for clarification.

Looking back through their old issues, there were so many casual sexual references, like "the first thing you'll notice about Final Fantasy X-2 is Yuna's ass." Political correctness wouldn't let a magazine get away with that kind of stuff today.
>>
>>2914749
>10 "naughtiest" games of all time.
Wasn't there a picture of a woman inserting a cord into her pussy in that issue?
>>
>>2914749
>Looking back through their old issues, there were so many casual sexual references, like "the first thing you'll notice about Final Fantasy X-2 is Yuna's ass." Political correctness wouldn't let a magazine get away with that kind of stuff today.

They use to catch shit for things they said. In the letters to the editor sections people would write in about shit said all the time.

I remember in Game Now 'The last line of the EGM2/Expert Gamer series' they would basically just make fun of all the people who wrote in, even though their target demographic had shifted to 10-14 year olds.

Disappointingly, I only ever picked up UK Playstation and Nintendo magazines, though Nintendo Official Mag was pretty good for physical freebies, and still is. The Smash Melee orchestral soundtrack CD is glorious and probably surprisingly rare.

https://youtu.be/zPjvCk2AqbY?list=PL1997DEF556A617A7

There was also a Donkey Konga CD, Mario and Luigi coverplates for GBA SP, a replacement Gamecube logo "jewel" you could put custom artwork inside, Zelda Four Swords clips, etc.

Wish I'd managed to get my hands on more Saturn mags. I have issue #35 that contains related image and it's incredibly damaged from being read so many times. I also always wanted to know what the source was on that lewd.
>>
I really miss game magazines. Before the internet. When the only things you heard people pissing and moaning about were Nintendo vs Sega and Ocarina of Time vs FF7.
>>
>>2913991
Cept that mag came out three years after I already had internet.
>>
I still read through all the issues of Official Sega Saturn Magazine at least once a year. It's really interesting to be able to read 20 year old fan letters complaining about the 32X going to waste, and Saturn games not releasing on time, amongst all the other problems the Saturn suffered.
>>
>>2914794
dammit now I wanna know what those 3 pics are from.

Inception-PS2 era Electronic Gaming Monthly mags are god tier. I have got my complete Nintendo Power collection, and now I am trying to get all the EGMs. I pick up Gamefan and PSM as well if the price is right.

Huh, that is what's going on in this picture. Never looked that closely at it before.

>>2914792
Yeah, I remember after the naughtiest games issue they dedicated a whole page or something to all the angry letters they got from parents. Their response was basically "we're not a kids' magazine, it's your responsibility to watch what your kids are reading."
>>
>>2914920
They really were man, I read EGM from like 1999-2001 and it was great, every issue was so thick and they did so many fun articles. I bought a few again in like 2005 or something and was sad to see that the magic had gone.
>>
>>2914852

I agree, I love reading old gaming magazines. For better or worse its the history books of our hobby.

>>2914975

You think 1999-2001 issues of EGM were thick? November/December issues of EGM were phone book thick in the mid 90s.
>>
>>2914735
You called it PS1 before even 2 came out?

That's really fucking weird.
>>
>>2915061

Just Playstation.
>>
>>2914878
Sure, I'd appreciate it greatly.

In 5th grade my friend had a Electronic Gaming Monthly subscription and I had a Nintendo power subscription I remember I didn't have any school books but my magazines were neatly stacked so I could select one from a glance. At first I liked reading the articles but I ended up reading them over and over and grew to like the section in Nintendo Power where people wrote in. He'd let me barrow his magazines and I'd let him barrow mine so it's like we had a subscription to both.

And that my friends, is why I can't read or write in cursive

Speaking off, why are those books not condemned by feminists? I mean surely if it's about objectification in media, they would be a target, right?
>>
>>2916914
Not him but they claim to be standing up for female rights, not male ones. I'm pretty sure a lot also claim that males don't need it. Obviously modern feminism has basically turned into a joke anyway.
