How do I achieve the SNES's 8:7 picture on my tv/CRT ? If I bought a framemiester thing, would it add the black bars for me ?
>>
Use a CRT on which you can significantly adjust the dimensions. Yours probably can. Learn about the service menu.

It's a JVC AV-27D303, googling how to do that now, thanks anon.

NP. Fair warning though WRITE DOWN THE DEFAULT VALUES there's no way to automatically restore them if you fuck something up in your excitement the first time you successfully access it

Use an emulator because the SNES outputs 4:3, autist.

If you don't like retro graphics maybe angry birds is more your thing.
>>
>>2887693
Angry Birds is practically retro already.
>>
>>2887693

yep. this is why the graphics primitives for the system are typically 7x8 blocks or muliples thereof

oh wait

I'm curious so I'll take a bite, which is correct, 8:7 or 4:3? I have my Framemeister running my SNES in 8:7 at the moment.
>>
>>2887845
4:3 is the only correct answer. Anything said to the contrary can be disregarded.
>>
>>2887868
why the rectangles and ovals though?
>>
>>2887845

"Correct" meaning how it looked on a consumer set in '93 : 4:3

It takes some willful obtuseness to conclude that the devs TOTALLY INTENDED their squares and rectangles to end up as rectangles and squares.

Many games had static images that were designed to look properly when squished (eg Super Mario Bros title, and this one >>2886858 that gets posted all the time), because you don't have to worry about tiling etc. when the image isn't going to be moving.

Gameplay on the other hand usually seems very clearly designed around square primitives. For instance in Legend of Zelda (NES and Snes versions) Link moves noticeably faster on the horizontal axis than he does on the vertical axis when you play it in 4:3. Additionally there are the classic Yoshi's Island bubble photos that very clearly violate some basic physical principles when viewed in 4:3 (stretched out ovals vs correct circles).

Stretching 8:7 to 4:3 was just a dirty hack that was necessary because video ram was incredibly expensive in 1983 and Nintendo wanted to keep the prices down. Still using that crappy buffer in 1990 was a travesty.

>>2887892
Genesis didn't have this problem. SEGA DO WHAT NINTENDONT
>>
>>2887845
amazing! I might buy a Framemeister just for this. Will it hook up to my crt? How is the input lag?

>>2887892
this should be copy pasta

>>2887910
exactly. I could never put my finger on why genesis FELT smoother but now I know why.
>>
>>2888342
From what I know, the Framemeister can only output HDMI, and it's specifically built around taking 240p content(which most CRTs handle gracefully) and scaling it nicely to HDTV screens. If you're socontent with sticking to CRT, and have the extra cash to drop on a Framemester, I'd just recommend buying a Sony PVM with RGB imput instead.
>>
>>2888342
Oh, and I've noticed virtually no imput lag. In my opinion, It actually runs smoother than it does if I hook it up through composite.
>>
>>2887845
There are two kinds of SNES games: Arcade Ports and True SNES games. Arcade Ports run at 8:7 and True SNES games run at 4:3.
>>
>>2888356
>Sony PVM with RGB imput instead.
yeah, any device that will add the black bars and output the correct aspect ratio to my CRT is what I want. Dont need anything else.
>>
>>2887586

YI on my CRT looks like neither of those, it's like in between.
>>
>>2888363
I think you can just manually adjust it to 8:7 on a PVM anyway, they're made for professional use, so pixel perfect scaling is built in mind with those machines.
>>
>>2887892
>Gameplay on the other hand usually seems very clearly designed around square primitives.

If games did that, then it was the developers mistake for not taking into account the different aspect ratio. Same for the oval bubbles in Yoshi's Island too.

Competent developers took the pixel aspect into consideration. For example Capcom was drawing the ingame artwork and sprites on paper with a non-rectangular square grid that matched the CPS2 systems aspect ratio.
>>
>>2888372
my crt doesn't have this luxury.

Didn't the Genesis have a better CPU as well?

Yes, it's called blaze processing.

Check out Game Sack on Youtube, they explain all that shit with great detail

I bet everyone over the age of 13 sounds 40 to you. Seriously kid. This thread is a bunch of babies being really silly. Personally I don't care if they want to be silly but they should find a baby hangout to do that on. This is an 18+ board.

>>
>>2890457
Faster clock, 32 bit registers, 3 separate ALUs for processing address+data registers in parallel, hardware memory prefetch (including branch speculation). It was a true modern design instead of a minor enhancement of the previous generation like the SNES's CPU. It's no surprise SNES games have so much more slowdown compared to Genesis games. And even with extra chips in the cartridge the SNES never did anything as impressive as Alien Solider. "Now is the time to the 68000 heart on fire!"
>>
>>2890003
You still sound like someone living in the basement with his mother who collects anise figurines and watches my little pony to get through the day.

It's true. I'm future you from the future. I came back in time to try to convince my 12 year old self to stop being such a faggot and not end this way. Obviously I failed.

Yes you failed. But maybe you shouldn't have sucked dick in the toiltet when you were 11.
