Why did the US version have different music from the JP/EU versions? Copyright reasons? Or were they just really inspired?

Also, which soundtrack did you like better?

Marketing

That's pretty much it.

They didn't think the Japanese soundtrack was marketable enough for the U.S audienec.
>>
Definitely the JP soundtrack for me, I think it's excellent.
Some tracks have a jazz fusion sound that reminds me of Out Run
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jr9i7w60Gm4
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qvqd4PieaFc

And others have a really energetic funk sound

By comparison, the US soundtrack seems slow and kinda boring.

Legal reasons, and the fact that they feared that the Japanese music would confuse westerners

As for which is my favorite, I would say that the Japanese is better overall and sounds more like a sonic game

Not so, the European/UK versions had the original music. Probably just because it was a bit too "dancey" for homophobic middle-America.

My general opinion about the US OST is that it starts nice then gets duller and duller as you play while the JAP one is the opposite.

both the Japanese and US soundtracks are pretty much the best video game soundtracks ever made if you ask me.

Don't know why they changed it, but I'm glad the US soundtrack exists. Even if I'd rather play the game with the Japanese one.

>>

>The lazy murricans didn't bother to change the past music in SonicCD
Interesting. I never play the US version beyond Palmtree Panic anyway.
>>
Sega of America thought the soundtrack wasn't cool and dark enough for US audiences, it sounded too techno-y and upbeat. The JP soundtrack sounded too "European" if that makes any sense. But more importantly, Sega of America built an expensive recording studio and they wanted to show off what they could do with it. I suppose it might also be why they made a soundtrack for Ecco CD when there's nothing wrong with the Mega Drive version. Just to show off the technology they had.

I think the JP soundtrack of Sonic CD is far superior to the US one, with the exception of Sonic Boom which is better than You Can Do Anything. The US soundtrack is a bit of a mess because the Past tracks are still the same as in the JP version, but the present and future tracks are completely different. This makes the Past tracks feel out of place. It's still a good soundtrack though.
>>
>>2826296
While I prefer the original Metal Sonic design, the fight against this guy was one of the best parts of S&K.
>>
>>2826351
Even a name like Nintendo U would have have worked, I think. No reference to the Wii at all.
>>
>>2826359
>>2826360
That's because the past songs used some different type of format that couldn't be easily changed. It's related to the reason why if you play the disk in a CD player, you won't be able to listen to the past tracks.
>>
>>2826596
>I think the JP soundtrack of Sonic CD is far superior to the US one

I can't see how anyone could think otherwise. The difference in quality is blatant.

The past songs are all played by FM synthesis and PCM samples, hence why you can't play them outside the game.
>>
Didn't the boss theme in the JP version say "work that fucker to the ground" or something like that?
>>
>>2827528
It's "work that sucker to death, come on now"

I think it's quite amazing how consistent Sega's sound department is. There are some bad Sonic games but I can't think of any Sonic game made by Sega that has a bad soundtrack.

Even the Mario and Sonic Olympic games have amazing soundtracks and it has really interesting renditions of classic Mario themes done by the Sega sound team.
If only the rest of Sega was as good as their sound team.
>>
>>2827524
There's FM on the past songs? It all sounds PCM to me but correct me if I'm wrong
>>
>>2827932
It's PCM

If it were FM, it would sound like any other Genesis game.
>>
>>2826802

It was not.
>>
>>2825860
IIRC, Sega of America had their own new music department and they wanted to have it cut their teeth on the new Sonic game.

Personally, I prefer the JP/EU version, but only because (due to technical issues) they couldn't replace the Past music in the US version (the Past music used the standard Genesis sound, while the Present and Future music used Redbook audio, which could be easily swapped out). If Sega of America managed to replace the Past music as well, I'd probably see the two soundtracks as equals.
>>
GET FUNKY

GET FUNKY YO HUSTLE HUSTLE
>>
>>2829189

No, we know exactly why. It has nothing to do with samples or lawsuits. That's horse shit assumptions being made up with absolutely no evidence backing it up.

The composer of the U.S soundtrack himself said it was due to marketing reasons.
>>
>>2829220

Where's your proof that such an issue exist. Because that has never been the case and has never been documented anywhere as ever being the issue.

>>2829227

I'm not understanding your question here. The Taxman ports contain both soundtracks, and Taxman made no mention of licensing being an issue in securing the in-game soundtrack.

The only actual issue were the vocal tracks, You Can Do Anything and Believe in Yourself, and that was because of the vocals. the Taxman port contains a recreation of the songs but with the vocals removed.
>>
>>2829185
I think even if they replaced the past music, I'd still prefer the Japanese soundtrack overall, since it fits the game more and sounds more like Sonic Music, where as the US soundtrack sounds more atmospheric.

Still, Sonic Boom is the better opening theme
>>
pretty sure the reason they changed the soundtrack was that in 1993 they thought electronic music wasn't that popular in the USA(that all changed a few years later)

Sonic 3D Blast for the Saturn had a sort of similar sound to Sonic CD JP(not exactly the same but they were both Rave Music) and they weren't changed after all
