What's the point of this? They do nothing but make the screen look darker.
>>
filters blends dithered pixels
scanlines sharpens them back and yeah they do make shit darker

>What's the point of this? They do nothing but make the screen look darker.

That's because you just turned the screen 50% black
>>
Half of the retards: Why are retro games colors so oversaturated?
The other half: What's the point of scanlines?
>>
That kind of thing is for 480p CRT monitors to make them display it as 240p.
>>
>>2820071
The way people implement scanlines often times is retarded. If the black lines were instead darkened interpolants of the neighboring lines, it wouldn't look like shit, and be a lot closer to what they are trying to recreate.
>>
>>2820071
It's for the underage and/or hipsters who think they're tech savvy and can recreate the "authentic" hardware experience.
>>
I grew up with CRTs and always hated scanlines.
When I got my first LCD monitor I was thrilled to be rid of them. Had terrible ghosting, but at least no scanlines.
>>
Throwing away half of your pixels obviously means you need to double your contrast to compensate.
>>
>>2820071
They make old pixel graphics look smoother, that's for sure. Not really authentic though.
>>
>>2820495
Do the scanlines on a real aperture grille CRT make the colors seem darker than they're supposed to be?

It's an emulator of the popular "Nintendo Entrainment System" videogame console. It's running the famous game called "Super Mario Bros. 3", showing the title screen. It's commonly used to play the NES games on a system that they were not meant for.

>Why are retro games colors so oversaturated?
Really? My old CRT has much more saturation than my LCDs.
>>
>>2821296
all i hear is blah blah bal
>>
>>2821313
uhdtvs have better color than crts
>>
>>2821316
Sadly I can't hear that from your mom because I tell her not to talk with her mouth full.
>>
>>2821362
i tell the same to your dad when he is sucking my cock
>>
>>2821318
We're talking about saturation not color depth. It's great that this is a meme already though. Just fucking fantastic.

>>2821313
And that's why scanlines work, which is my fucking point.

I'm seriously just going to give up on /vr/ soon.
>>
>>2820368
This. So, so, so much this.
>>
>>2821371
over saturation in crts is not a feature. color brillance in uhdtvs is.
>>
>>2820071
That is a terrible CRT filter. There are much better ones and I wouldn't base your opinion on them off of that one.
>>
>>2820071
To make dumb nerds argue over whether or not that's how CRT scanlines really look like.

The filter won't give you the real radiation and static shocks of a tube.
>>
>>2822457
I'm starting a Patreon for my USB radiation and shock generator.

This is what playing my Kega Fusion looks like with only 25% scanlines and Blargg's NTSC filter. Op's pic has scanlines jacked up to at least 75% or 100%

my ntsc/scan line filter looks great. it's not as ugly as real crt scanlines, it's much more decent.
>>
>>2822959
that looks like crap. if you want it to look like its on a crt than play it on a crt
