Bubsy's getting its first two games ported to Steam and the people who own the rights are considering a new game. Bubsy thread.

What could paws-ibly go wrong?
>>
Why the hell would you buy that?
>>
Because it's cool.....
>>
I don't know what's the business point of reviving a legendary bad series, it reminds me of the Shaq Fu kickstarter scam a few years back. And I know the first game was actually "kind of" alright but only compared to other textbook platformers of the time. It has no value today.
>>
Bubsy is literally a meme.
Nobody actually cares about him or his games.
>>
>>2800356
CRAP I did NOT mean to predict the future like that.
>>
The first 2 games were 6/10
The third game was shit in all aspects.

Honestly, I don't think that somebody wish a new game.
>>
>>2800389
>6/10
As someone who's at least tried nearly every SNES/MD game, that's EXTREMELY lenient. It's more of a 4/10.
>>
>>2800406
Ok. I have to say that I play the first two games when I was a child, and never played them again. If I play them again, maybe I might reconsider my opinion.
>>
>>2800356
This is actually pretty brilliant. All they need is ONE famous Youtuber to buy this pack to make a shitty joke video and before you know it tons of their fans will end up buying it as a joke too. Hell I've seen a few people crack jokes similar to OP on the internet today about this so they already got some free marketing out of it. Then there's like what >>2800389 said, the games were just ok however due to how hard Bubsy got pushed onto people as being the next big thing it got severe backlash by everyone. Could totally see this ending up like MD Geist where it gains a dedicated group of fans who weren't around when it got pushed so hard allowing them to appreciate it for what it is.

>>
>>2800431
Hey, didn't Bubsy 3D blatantly MADE UP magazine quotes on its cover? I'm pretty sure that was a thing.
>>
Are the first two Bubsy games actually bad or is it just a meme/something an e-celeb said? Obviously the 3D one stinks but I've never played the first two.
>>
>>2800443

They're actually bad.
>>
>>2800443
Never played the second, but the first one is alright, besides some occasionally strange air physics.
The backlash comes from the obnoxious character, and from moronic youtubers not understanding the gliding and trying to play a OHKO game at Sanic speed.
>>
>>2800443
First one is a Sanic clone where the screen scrolling is slightly lagging behind so you have little time to react, you die in one hit and take fall damage, it can be fun if you like memorizing levels or going slow.
Second one is downright unplayable. Like what the fuck is going on there, it's a gangbang of sprites flying in all directions with no sense or reason.

I'm sure someone will come along and try to defend them as actually good games for hipster points.
>>
>>2800443
Another interesting point, when you die objects you killed don't respawn. Which makes practicing levels very difficult.

While PSExtreme magazine does exist, there's no such thing as Golden X award, nor did they ever review Bubsy 3D.
EGM actually trashed the game in their review, so they just made a good quote up.
>>
>>2800443
The first two were just very mediocre. Bubsy's reputation comes more from how horrible his character was and how hard they tried to push him as something that will be remembered like Mario or Sonic yet failed horribly in that regard. He's like the embodiment of everything that was wrong with the 90s mascot platforming craze.

the other day I saw a desert bus charity run, wouldn't be surprised if that was ported to steam too. super noah's ark 3D was released on steam a few months back. what a shitload of fuck, people "ironically" pay money for bad games just because they think its funny
>>

Super Noah's Ark is a doom reskin, you can at least have fun with it.

No. I've never watched JonTron and never will, but I've played most of the SNES' platformers and Bubsy is near the bottom.

>the air physics make no sense. if you run and jump off a building, you can fight the sideways momentum by holding the opposite directional button. but as soon as you let go of the button, you return to your original momentum. No other platformer does this.
>huge, non-linear levels, but there's a 10 minute time limit and there's no reason to explore them
>Bubsy can jump really high and run really fast, but there's fall damage and only one hitpoint. the only way to survive is to be slow and deliberate with your jumps
>bad graphics and sound

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1bh-h4-yUmQ Look at how the player has to slowly and deliberately move Bubsy so he won't smack into an enemy and spout his catchphrase again.
>>
>>2800469

I know where that's from.

There are Bubsy roleplay Tumblrs. Multiple ones. And in one, she's a transsexual washed up mascot from modern times who hangs out with her game incarnation through time travel.
>>
>>2800563
No, the fighting game kickstarter was literally a scam, the company stopped updating the site the moment they met their goal and so far, almost 2 years later, still no sight of playable beta.

In my opinion, it's still better than platforming games like Donkey Kong and Yoshi's Island. Bubsy's levels are huge and non-linear. You can take different paths to complete each level, unlike most other platformers that restrict players to narrow paths.

No.
>>
>>2800637
The level design wasn't the problem with Bubsy. It was the physics/game design.
The game pushes you to go fast, but 1 hit kills and fall damage punish you for going fast. Unless you have the level memorized the best strategy is to go, skid stop, repeat.
Whenever you jumped, the game pulled you back. I shouldn't be fighting the jumping, it should come natural, even Castlevania has very predictable and easy jumps.
>>
>>2800645

>>
>>2800637
>Bubsy is better than Yoshi's Islam

This is such a whacked out opinion I couldn't even think of something like this as good bait.
>>
>>2800648
>You can't quote obvious negatives of games if some e-celeb did an episode on it
Fuck this board, it turns more and more into /v/ everyday.
>>
>>2800637
Being a half assed Sonic CD copy shouldn't make you think it's better. You gotta whole ass things or else you'll never get anywhere.
>>
>>2800645
All of the points you've raised are minor issues. The difficulty of Bubsy, for the most part, is about the same as the difficulty of Super Mario World.

>>2800649
I'm not baiting, just stating my personal opinion. I find Bubsy to be a more likeable character than Yoshi and baby Mario. Yoshi has no personality. Baby Mario has no personality either. All he does is cry during the game, and it gets very annoying. The levels in Yoshi's Island are boring. Most levels feel the same because the low contrast color palette and the same gimmicks and obstacles being repeated over and over in boring patterns, worsened by the fact that you're restricted to very linear paths. Nintendo's other platform game series, Donkey Kong Country, has the same issues.
>>
>>2800710

shhh what's that? i think i just heard ulillillia orgasming
>>
>>2800710
It's true though, Yoshi is a laughably bad game, with the stupid baby going WAAHWA WAAHWA every 2 seconds and the Dong game has retarded collision detection and zoomed in sprites making it impossible to dodge enemies or judge jumps. Only millennial shitters who got their opinions from youtube celebrities think those are better than Bubsy.

>>
>>2800464

Those rumors are false. It was reviewed in the December 1996 issue, and it got a score of 93%. (I have it right here in my hands). Although, the average review score of PSextreme was extremely high, like 85%, so it's not that high of a score really.

>illegal

Politicians do it all the time.
>>
>>2800443
The sidescrollers however between mediocre to bad depending on the levels.
What people really hate Bubsy for (besides Bubsy 3D) is how he was basically a forced meme, they insisted that he was gonna compete with Mario and Sonic but people just didn't buy into that and grew to hate him because they kept forcing a really unfunny character.
>>

This is an extraordinary opinion, in a really bad way. As someone else said, I wouldn't even consider saying this as bait.
>>
>>2800645
Level design was completely atrocious. I can't see why someone would defend it. If the controls were fixed it would still be a forgetable 4/10 game at most.
>>
>>2800645
Fall deaths can be avoided completely by gliding. You don't need to "fight against jumping". Most of the jumps are pretty easy. There's no need to do pixel-perfect jumps in the game. If you make huge leaps blindly, of course you would die easily.

>>2802291
There's nothing wrong with the controls. You just need more jumping discipline.
>>
>>2802319

i have a friend who is a genuine fan of the old bubsy games.
he has no idea of bubsies current state.
not sure if he'll get a heart attack or a boner
>>
>>2803892
Hm I know this artist.

I never understood the love for Bubsy. If it's all just a big ironic meme then I get it, but if it's genuine, what I don't understand is why Awesome Possum or Radical Rex, or various other hastily shat out mascots aren't lauded just the same way. Some of those games are on the same level or better, some of those designs are on the same level or better (Not to disrespect Ken Macklin, though.). I suppose their games haven't been reviewed by popular enough Youtube reviewers.
>>
>>2803935
Radical Rex, if you don't collect the fire powerups throughout the level you're stuck with a VERY long, tedious boss fight. The game pulls a cheap trick with level design and makes you go through the exact same maps twice, but in reverse order (right to left rather than left to right) and with more enemies. Even a kid could tell they were just being lazy there.
As for Awesome Possum, it runs at 30fps and even struggles to keep THAT framerate constant.
>>
>>2803935
The guy who is obsessed with their dickgirl Bubsy OC loves Bubsy because someone put Bubsy in a space funeral fan game. It had nothing to do with youtube reviews honestly. Though I'm with you, I wish Battletoads got this kinda autistic treatment, and they were even a meme game at some point.
>>
>>2803935
>I never understood the love for Bubsy.
What love? I've only ever seen people trash it.

Personally, I never understood the HATE for Bubsy. It's just another me-too platformer that has no standout features, but at the same time it isn't even bad enough to be notable for that. It's just kind of there.
>>
>>2803935
>I never understood the love for Bubsy.
I don't think most of us have fond memories of the series.
>>
>>2803950
>Personally, I never understood the HATE for Bubsy.

Take a really mediocre game, then throw in a bad game, then throw in an ABYSMAL game and you see why people aren't too hot on this bobcat's series.
>>
I'm pretty sure there is only one Bubsy fan in the whole world and his name is Ulillillia.
>>
>>2803958
Only 3D is genuinely bad. The others are middle of the road and forgettable. If 3D never existed nobody would even remember Bubsy.
>>
bubsarella
>>
>>2804093
You know if Bubsarella was just some sort of porn thing I would be totally on board, but the way that artist is obsessed with their OC and promotes their fangame as the true successor to Bubsy and gets mad about all other bubsy developments makes me just go look for bimbotized sonic.
>>
>>2804107
it's pretty cringy, yeah.

i'd still totally tap that, though.
>>
>>2801128

>>
>>2803958

>>
>>2803950
>Personally, I never understood the HATE for Bubsy.

It's insecurity. Some gamers just feel psychologically threatened by the fact that there are other people who don't share the same preferences as them.
>>
In fact, its only mistake was copying the Sonic formula way too closely. The same formula that was proven to not work very well.
>>
The first two games just came off as pretty boring and average to me. At least that is how I felt about them as a kid. It was not til Bubsy 3D came out that the massive hate train for the series started.
>>
>>2804350
You mean the same formula that sold millions of copies and was critically praised?

It's fine to dislike Sonic, but to say it didn't work is an outright fallacy. Hell, Bubsy has very little in common with Sonic other than "the character can move really fast".

Well, my knowledge of terrible 90's mascots is a bit rusty, but I should be able to remember a few...
There's Radical Rex, Aero the Acro-bat (and his squirrel clone made by the same team, can't remember the name), Mr.Nutz, Gex, Sparkster, Rocky Rodent, Jazz Jackrabbit, Bug... And slightly later on, you have stuff like Crash Bandicoot and Spyro, and probably a whole bunch of others
Note that just because a game does the "quirky animal" thing doesn't mean it's bad, there's a bunch of real gems up there like Aero and Sparkster. But it's pretty obvious they're all following the fad.

I dunno, Battletoads were here before this whole animal mascot thing really started booming. They were toadally trying to ape the Ninja Turtle's success, though.

this is played by me, the 4th webm is a TAS which is actually slower than what you can do now because of a new clip... but it looks cool anyway

bubsy is a very difficult platformer to speedrun because most mistakes lead to instant death and those that do not make you lose all of your momentum (which there is a fuck ton of). you often rely on bouncing on enemies heads to keep that momentum.
>>
>>2808156
Well, nice job man. This must have taken hours to master, that's admirable.
Seems to me like Bubsy's main problem is that you can't see enough of the screen for a character that moves that fast. Maybe some sort of widescreen hack would help?
Let's hope the new right-owners will at least try to make some changes to the games to make them a slightly less complicated experience.

yeah that is a big problem. you run so fast you have very little reaction time to time your jumps, since the edge of a path that appears on screen just a few frames before you reach it by running. practice helps of course, but it is rarely 100% consistent

theres a lot of camera scrolling manipulation you can do to change when enemies spawn too. You can see that when i fall down on the dirt mound in the first webm. It often allows you to continue bouncing on enemies that otherwise might be barely out of reach, or avoid enemies that may otherwise hit you without having to sacrifice momentum

I like it. I've always liked the washed up angle for 'failed video game mascots'. I once thought about doing this sort of thing with Awesome Possum, once interpreting his immense care for the environment as a cry for attention.

>>
>>2810218
I don't really believe in labels but I do fit the bill. I'm glad I seem familiar, but I'm not really enjoying drawing what I'm particularly known for right now so I'm not trying to promote anything.

>>2800384
Today I do really think this, back when I said >>2803935 I mostly meant the 'ironic' fans of it. I see some genuine fans, as fleeting as they are, but the vast majority of anyone who says anything positive about Bubsy are just people who leave a YT or Steam greenlight comment saying how 'awesome' it is in lieu of something actually witty or pertinent to anything.

I actually never played 1 as a kid, I played 2 and at the time I liked it (a revisit was not as enjoyable as I expected) and then I played Bubsy 3D as a kid. It rightfully crashed and burned with that one. I remember some electric-looking enemies scaring the crap out of me, I figure it's the sharp and low poly models combined with fast movement.

Even that weird, 'artsy' (I think) free Bubsy "game" that was thrown together for the PC seemed like some big ironic statement about him, rather than any sort of celebration. If anything, I'm a little upset at how that, plus this Steam re-release seem to ride that ironic humor instead of any sort of re-imagining or improvement on him.

Bubsy 1 and 2 weren't that bad. I remember renting both a few times and eventually beating both. They weren't as good as Super Mario World or Donkey Kong Country. Hell, even stuff like Aero the Acro-Bat were better. But, at the same time, people really oversell their awfulness.

Bubsy 3D was atrocious.

Alright alright here we go. I thought I should tread lightly, and then go way deeper when I've really got time to myself. It's gonna go in some interesting directions, time to tie off the vanilla stuff. But anyway, what I think would make this a cheesy mascot vg character a la Bubsy/Aero/Awesome Possum/etc:

>90's-tastic
>Probably wants to protect the environment in a way that is similar but not the same as an established character
>Has to finish the stage in a way that's similar and different, so how about a big American Football goalpost because why not
>Ground pound centric attack, the other mascots haven't done it yet which means it's good, who cares if it's a cumbersome method of attack

>>2808258
Even if you don't have literal eyebrows, you can still express the emotions associated with eyebrow movement by just fiddling with the top of the eye. Of course that's just how I do things, some designs could benefit from some semblance of actual eyebrows.

it's amazing how bad 3D actually is
I gave it a legitimate go.
I muted the sound. Wasn't even going to give that a chance.
Everyone knows how terrible the visuals are, and they're almost charming with how awful they are.

holy fuck, these controls
If you want to actually control Bubsy, you end up jumping constantly, even on flat ground. His normal turning controls handle like they were designed for stages that were far, far, FAR more open than one would expect.
The camera pans down when you jump. Makes platforming with these controls actually possible, but has causes issues with the fact that you need to jump constantly to fucking move freely (so you can't see where you're going).
You actually notice that yes, the developers seem to have actually thought about the controls in some way, but they're still really bad.

once you get used to the controls (yes, it's possible, there was a point where I was making really tricky jumps and landing them without thinking about it too much), the awful, awful, AWFUL stage design hits you like a punch to the throat
There's nothing redeeming about it, they slapped some platforms in midair and sculpted some land out and called it a day. Pick a level, any level. It's shit.
>>
>>2800464
