To anyone new to Dragon Quest let me help you out on where you should start.
I'd recommend playing in order but if you want to play the best of the best start with 5 or 8
I - SNES
II - SNES
III - SNES or GBC (SNES is better overall, GBC has a couple more extras.)
IV - DS or Mobile (Mobile version has Party Chat restored, is otherwise identical to DS version.)
V - DS or PS2 (DS has an additional waifu to marry, PS2 has better graphics.)
VI - DS
VII - PS1 or 3DS
VIII - PS2 or wait for 3DS (Mobile version is gutted)
IX - DS
X - lol never ever because it's a MMO
XI - not confirmed yet but it will come out for PS4, 3DS and maybe the NX
>>
3 snes by far. The only thing you're missing on the gbc is an extra endgame dungeon that takes too much grinding to access anyway.

Don't know why anyone would play the gbc version outside of nostalgia. I
>>
>>2793279
Mobile would almost be the best version of 1-3 if it wasn't for that shitty localization restoring the DW talk.

Also worth noting that if you don't have a DS and don't want to emulate V/VI mobile are all the same quality as IV.
>>
What's wrong with the PS1 for 4?
>>
>>2793304
ps1 and ds are the same its just that the ps1 version never came to the west
>>
>>2793368
Thanks for the bump! :^)
>>
>>2793247
Thanks bro, I do happen to be new to DQ and have wanted to jump in for a while. I kept getting caught on where to start cause pretty much everyone I talk to says to just start anywhere. I think I'll start with 5 on the DS.
>>
>>2793247
I have tried to get into V so many times now. Actually got recommendations in another DQ thread here a couple months back. Every game in the series aside from 1, 3 and 9 has been a huge slog every time I've tried.

The thing that interested me in V was building a party, but I haven't made it far enough to really get to that. The tiger you have early on didn't even listen to my commands half the time.

How long past the time skip can I really start party building? And does the problem with your party members not always listening to you continue or do you get more control over them?
>>
>>2793368

First 7 are.

I'm playing III SNES.

I can't get this song out of my head.
>>
>>2793714
I forgot my picture.
>>
>>2793279
I prefer the NES/GBC version because I don't like the tall player sprites on SNES. I probably lean towards GBC being my favorite due to its portability as well. I hadn't played DQIII until just a few years ago, so it's not really nostalgia related.
>>
>>2793737
>>2793279

I like the NES versions the best mainly because of the music.
The SNES and GBC also have good music but I think the charm of the NES chiptune is unique. Game Boy chiptune is close but not quite the same.
>>
>>2793303
>NES uses dumb dialog to appeal to Ultima users
>GBC fixes that
>SNES translations keep this idea for obvious reasons
>mobile restores it for no da nostalgia
Translations are weird sometimes.
>>
So, what do the first three DQ games bring to the table?

I have a hard time getting into kinda generic RPGs with just standard turn based combat.
>>
>>2793247
In what way is the mobile version of 8 gutted?
>>
>>2793954
You probably won't like 1 and 2. They're the beginnings of JRPGs, meaning the most standard thing ever.

In 3 you get to hire your own mercenaries with you being able to pick their class, right down to personality in SNES and onward. Later on you can change these mercs to any other merc class at all.
>>
>>2793962
IIRC things like the voice acting were scrapped entirely. VIII's the only one to ever do that.
>>
So if I grab DW I+II and DW III on GBC and DQ IV-IX for the (3)DS would I be good to go, or are the SNES versions of I and II that much better?
>>
>>2793965
Just a reminder that Red and Morrie will be playable on the 3DS version.
>>
I've only played the first game. So do later games in the series not use ye olde English? I actually really liked that. It made the game feel more fun and I thought it matched the overall tone pretty well.
>>
>>2793984
I wonder if it will be updated on mobile with the additions or not?

Probably not, that's giving Square too much credit.

this is pretty accurate but drop dq4 ds. phone is the best way to go unless someone hacks the party chat in.
dq5/dq6 phone should be mentioned for accurate ds ports.

also theres no shame in running the first 3 on gbc if you want consistent graphics.

I really don't see what the big deal is. Both those games have already been available here in the US for many years. All this hype can't be real. Quit advertising Nintendo's gay website.

>epic "everyone is a shill" meme

Return to /pol/ and /v/ please.
>>
>>2795919
>people pointing out potential shills are a meme
You realize this is actual shills favorite new meme right? The memeification of their own existence only works to their benefit.

That said, I never called you a shill. I'm willing to believe in this case you're a legit poster who's excited about something they just found out about. I just don't understand what the big deal is, really. Or why it was necessary to link directly to their website.

Whatever though I don't really care.
>>

More content, stupid. Playable Red and Morrie, more monsters, new dungeon.

It's also fairly difficult to find the PS2 version and it's one of those games every PS2 emulator shits the bed on.
>>
>>2795957
Not even close to enough new content to warrant buying them again. And I have no idea what you're talking about just a year or so ago I played all the way through 8 without much trouble at all that I can recall. It works just fine.

What new content is in DQ7? That's actually my favorite DQ is why I ask. And google isn't brining up anything immediately. Do you have some Japanese source or something that wouldn't pop up?
>>
>>2795835

Don't thank Nintendo. They are a company that only brings sadness and nostalgia.

As much as it pains me, thank Squenix. It's their stuff.
>>
>>2796759

DQ VII on 3DS is a complete remake, just look at screenshots on google, no more 2D sprites over 3D backgrounds, now it's all 3D and more similar to DQ VIII.
As for new features, I know it no longer has random encounters and now you can see enemies on the field map.

>>2796763

Both VII and VIII on 3DS are being published in the west by Nintendo, not by Square.
They already published previous DQ games in the west, like IX.
>>
>>2796778

I was both of those posts. First, you are absolutely right. I played DQ9 too and did not realize that was Nintendo of America. So definitely have to give them props regardless of my overall feelings of Nintendo.

Second, I saw the graphical update, which is nice. I'm more wondering about actual content changes though, but perhaps that's just not known at this time. DQ7 certainly already has a tremendous amount of content though.
>>
>>2796763
If SE wants my thanks, they should start publishing DQ games in my country. Until then, thanks, Nintendo!
>>
>>2793247
New to Dragon Quest and I have to ask - who is that character, and is there more art of her?

DQ/DW III on the GBC is amazing as well, a nice reminder of my teenage years.
>>
>>2796903
Reverse image search. The Dragon Quest wiki is literally the top result.

This thread has pushed me to begin replaying DQ1&2 on the SNES, haven't played either in 15 or so years since my friend got the GBC versions for his birthday
>>
>>2793962
No voice acting, graphics were worse (that's a given I suppose), music was worse (iirc it was MIDI)

One thing I find that people forget to mention though in defense of the mobile version is that it has instant alchemy, which is kinda nice. Does anyone know if that's in the 3DS version?
>>
>>2795835
That's still useless without a working 3DS emulator.

Yep, I assume so. I beat it in one afternoon and I'm the slowest video game player ever. It's very short but also a bit frustrating: there's one single save point in the whole game, in the center of the map.
>>
>>2797345
Yes, if you know exactly what to do, grind a fuckton, exploit some bugs, and ignore a bunch of stuff in the game.
>>
>>2794246
Mobile 1-3 does this. Actually better done than NES, though I can understand why some hate them going back to the old localization.

The DS/mobile IV-VI use different dialects in different areas to make people sound unique. In spite of people bitching about it, it's pretty damn well written. VII PS1 does normal translation fare for the time. It's unknown if they're going to keep going with VII like the previous ones or not, but I expect we're getting a redone one and spell names to be changed to the same lineup at least.
>>
>>2794918

>>
How's the fan-translation of DQ6 on SNES? I was thinking about getting the DS version, but the music doesn't sound as good and the character portraits are off-putting to me.
>>
>>2798154

The only reason to either get or not a system is whether there are games on it you want to play or not.

Any other excuse you come with is either console/brand war stuff or millennial entitlement.

Thank you OP, I'll start soon.
>>
>>2798194
Obviously, but they were talking about getting a game they very much wanted. So if the only obstacle is needing a 3DS, it's not a big one.
>>
>>2798191
Incomplete. There's like three patches that were never combined out of the effort, with different things translated in each.

It's a pain, DS was way kinder to me in this regard. Even if Beastmaster and monster catching was made differently.
>>
>>2798191
Just go with DS. The one on RHDN is really buggy and incomplete, the other team's effort is even more incomplete and an utter mess.

>>2799816
I liked the changes though. The original version of monster catching in VI felt like a watered down V.
>>
>>2799821
Do you ever get full control over the monsters you collect in V? And can you rename them anything you like?
>>
>>2793247
why is this pic so delicious, i have open it every single time i'm scrolling the first page
>>
>>2799831

the monster gathering in that is chance based. you cannot name them, but you can give them orders.

some monsters have that jester type though, where they'll just kinda do whatever they want.
>>
Just out of curiosity, if I enjoyed Dragon Warrior III on GBC, should I grab the DQ games on DS if I can find them complete and cheap? They seem to be selling for a high price, but I love me some JRPG on a handheld.
>>
>>2800282
Here's the deal with the DS games, they removed party chat, meddled with the xp rates to make leveling faster and added annoying brit accents for every single npc in the game. If you can deal that they are acceptable.
>>
>>2800282
For the most part it's a no-brainer if you can get them, unless mobile is cheaper since it's the same thing.

As far as emulating goes they do well however. The touchscreen doesn't get used a whole lot unless it's a minigame.
>>
>>2800296
>>2800297
Also yes, the party chat thing is true. Mobile's got the cut stuff though.

Personally I could stand the accents though, I even liked them. I may just have shit taste though.
>>
>>2800296
>>2800297
>>2800303
Fair enough, thank you kindly friend Anons. I'll go with the DS versions, since I have a dislike of Android/Apple Mobile devices. Not to mention they hardly seem comfortable to play games on. Wish me luck getting the three games cheap/complete.
>>
My favorite is IX, when it came out me and my friends all played together. Good stuff!

>Here's the deal with the DS games, they removed party chat
Only dq4 ds removed the party chat during translation. The iphone/android port restored the party chat.
dq5/dq6 ds have the party chat intact.
>>
>>2800405
Ah, thanks for clarifying.
>>
>>2793303
>Mobile would almost be the best version of 1-3
Absolutely not.
For starters, the mobile version of 3 is a completely gutted port of SNES.
1 and 2 meanwhile have horrible aspect ratio problems due to being ported up from older dumbphones in japan, and the graphics, while a good try, are terrible. they tried to mimic the looks of 3 and 6's SNES versions, but at the same time tried to keep the maps as close as possible to the original games, resulting in really inconsistent shit like doors that are smaller than people.

This. Just sound it out with your best Scrooge McDuck impression and it all makes perfect sense.
The other nations in 4 use different stereotypical accents (e.g. Elena was Russian I think), so if you know what accent they are going for its not hard to sound out phonetically.
>>
>>2796778
I haven't played it yet but it looks like the DQ7 remake runs in the DQ9 engine and features stuff like fully animated characters during battle and class changes actually change the appearance of the characters. Check out the Japanese trailer:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ea4Tjie4ZiM

I am a bit more excited for DQ7 because it is a total remake whereas DQ8 is more of a port with additional features but I will definitely be getting both when they get released here next year (fucking finally).
>>
>>2800524
>caring about graphics in a Dragon Quest game
It's nice when they're good, like in 6, 8, 9, but mostly Dragon Quest games just look bad.

The mobile versions of 1-3 have the best sound of any 1-3.
>>

You mean the Famicom originals or in general? The Famicom games only have kana so the main difficulty is figuring out the correct meaning and sentence structure. The SFC remakes have simple Kanji so they're easier to read.
>>
>>2795835
DQVII is the only thing that would make me buy a 3DS
>>
>>2800973

I was thinking in general. I'm working on learning enough Japanese that I can just play import games without struggling too much or needing to constantly use a guide or dictionary.
>>
>>2801061
What is stopping you? At worst you will have to use a dictionary.
>>
>>2801120
>What is stopping you?

Nothing, I'm working on it. I was just wondering if DQ's writing was aimed at kids and easy to read or not.
>>
>>2799873
Okay, but for the most part once a monster is in my party it will act like a normal party member?
>>
>>2801127
DQ2 was the first game I played in Japanese and it was easy to understand. Items in your inventory are normally in Kana so if you missed some Kanji for them it doesn't hurt.
There were some fantasy and religious terms I had to learn but overall you aren't flooded with new vocabulary.
