Is mega evolution really that much of a boost, though? Alain's fought 10 megas in a row with no real advantage over them, fought and held it's own against Groudon and Kyogre in their primal forms, standstill vs a mega evolved champion's ace, and held Zygarde 50%. Most of the times, he's fighting the absolute top tiers in his mega.

I don't think mega evolution was ever that big an increase, especially in the anime.

Ash always thought zard is super strong even after it started obeying, and charizard itself believed to be invincible or something.
