I liked the episode, but mainly because of the nostalgia factor. Besides that, I kinda agree there wasn't much beyond that, but whatever, I already knew we were getting a nostalgia anniversary episode and it met my expectations.

There was some tease in the original, but mostly in the Orange Islands. There was a page from a novel that had some teasing as well.
Understandable that teasing was in small amounts, since the target audience is young boys who don't care for romance. It's why Serena bugged me, her constant blushing over Ash felt out of place for me.

When they revealed they were going to the Gym at the end of the episode, Kiawe and Mallow were the ones who the episode spotlighted. It piqued their interest. And remember Kiawe and Mallow are the ones who are most unsure of their goals by the end of SM, and they are the only ones who appear in the Battle Tree afterwards. Is that time of the year?

I haven't watched any episode since the end of XY&Z, but Misty and Brock's return caught my interest. Just finished watching the raw, and here are my two cents.
It was fucking nice to see Brock and Misty back, complete with their gags (Brock trying to woo grills, Misty being scared of bugs), as well as seeing some of Ash's mons at Oak's. Still, I feel like only Bulbasaur got a little spotlight; all other previous mons had maybe half a minute of screentime at most, and that was it; even the flashbacks (which were merely stills) were short. Maybe the worst thing is that other iconic mons like Infernape, Sceptile, Chikorita and Charizard didn't appear nor were mentioned at all (the latter only for 1.5 seconds in a flashback), not to mention good mons like Luchabro, Shadescroc or Torkoal.
It was nice to hear TR's og motto, but their appearance felt accessory; they were scheming at the airport, then they disappeared until they tried to steal Pikachu and other mons with a giant Meowth, then they got BTFO fast. I totally didn't expect the bear though, that was a surprise and I guess that alone makes it better than watching them fly again for the gorillionth time.
From Ash's new companions, I liked Kaki (his name?) the most, he seemed genuinely entertaining and actually gave personality to what otherwise would've been shallow shilling of Kanto mons. And the blue girl too I guess, her segment was more memorable than Lillie's, the fat kid's and whatshername's.
Overall, the episode felt a tad too fast for me, and I don't exactly get what was the plot, if any, besides "Ash and co. go to Oak's lab and stuff happens". Nor the point of the episode besides the OS cameos and references and showcasing Kanto Pokemon. For example, Rotom was saying something about seeing all 150 kantomons, and suddenly Mew was watching them behind a tree, before leaving unnoticed. Why?

tl;dr it was a good episode from a nostalgia viewpoint, liked the references, but besides that it lacked any substance

Mao's goal is to find a recipe she can use as the signature dish of her dad's cafeteria to make it famous, Suiren's goal is to have her Ashimari create a bubble big and strong enough to let her dive deep underwater and explore never-before-seen depths, and Kaki's goal is some half-explained "best Fire trainer ever" shit. Lilie and Mamane don't have goals.
