it's actually impossible for you pokemon to faint, they'll always hang on with 1 hp
they found that kids don't like it when they lose and oftentimes will stop playing, so this way they get to keep going even if they haven't developed strategy or caught any strong pokemon

I don't even like it that much but I used it in a normal playthrough so I did at least use all three starters once and it fainting and falling over like a fucking waffle gave me a joy every time. I also had Passimian on my team and it just tripping over its own fucking berry was also funny. We need more comedic fainting animations.
