I haven't been able to enjoy the English openings in years. I especially hate the recurring use of the words "Hero/Heroes". What does that even mean? What does being a hero have to do with Pokémon? Why is the fifth movie called "Pokémon Heroes" in English? Why does the fourth movie say "Best friends. Better heroes." on the English poster? It means nothing. It's a word with no relevant meaning to anything it's applied to. There's no main character whose goal is to become a "hero" in the anime.

It's hard for me to watch dub openings because they always rearrange all the animation into a sequence that rarely makes sense and even use animation intended for the episodes.

Anyway, in terms of openings.
Pocket Monsters - it feels like the music chronicles Ash's growth as a character
>Aim to be a Pokémon Master - easily the most iconic opening, and probably the most fun to sing along to
>Rival! - this one really grew on me and it feels like one of the openings with real emotion
>OK! - I find that the more I listen to it, the less of an impact it has and the more repetitive and artificial it sounds
>Aim to be a Pokémon Master (Whiteberry Version) - poor man's Mezase Pokémon Master
>Ready Go! - fitting for the end of the original series

Advanced Generation - the series with the most consistently good openings, minus one black spot
>Advance Adventure - YUUKIRINRIN GENKIHATSURATSU KYOUMISHINSHIN IKIYOUYOU
>Challenger!! - totally different tone to Advance Adventure. Sounds good, but I think AA ends better
>Pokémon Symphonic Medley - eeehh, doesn't really fit Advanced Generation's spirit
>Battle Frontier - YES I'M OKAAAAAAY
>Spurt! - this one is super fun to sing along with

Diamond & Pearl - fun playful openings, all good, but lacking the oomph of Advanced Generation
>Together - feels like a really fresh opening welcoming you into an early, misty morning
>High Touch! - I like the rhythm of the duet action going on
>The Greatest - Everyday! - cool imagery and lyrics

Best Wishes - overall alright, doesn't feel like there's much to say
>Best Wishes! - I think this was the first opening that gave off the vibe that it was completely separate from previous series
>Be an Arrow! - probably the weakest of the openings with vocals, it's dumb in lyrics and imagery
>Summerly Slope - it's much better at being an upbeat opening than the previous one

XY - the real standout is XY&Z, one of the best openings in years
>V (Volt) - there's just something really artificial about this opening, like it's phoned in
>Getter Banban - more passion in this one than the previous, and it has a nice chorus
>XY&Z - really memorable for how intense and cool it is, especially leading up to the chorus

Sun & Moon - too soon to come to a conclusion
>Alola!! - goofy intro for a goofy series, probably not much to be said
>Aim to be a Pokémon Master -20th Anniversary- - better than Whiteberry at least, but terrible imagery

But there are some really good songs that are ignored because they aren't openings.

Yeah, the obsession with "hero" is something I noticed and got burnt out on too. I think it's kind of been a part of the series and Pokemon in general kind of trying to seem less violent and collection oriented.

I always had a soft spot for This Dream. Fast-paced, has optimistic lyrics and I just like songs like this one in general.

Unbeatable is the last good English one. Without Siegler everything really went to shit.

Not my favorite one though. The first through third have their own special place in my heart but my favorite would be This Dream without question. Not only do I like it, it was fitting for the time since everyone I knew had stopped playing which I had no intention of doing which the lyrics go with. I wasn't part of it as a fad, I was part of it because I loved the series. As for the movie versions, my favorite is We Will Be Heroes.

Though the one that probably made me feel the most was the end theme for the 8th movie, We Will Meet Again. Fucking horrible to buy that packaged with Mastermind of the Mirage Pokémon. After learning what happened to create such an abomination the song makes me feel bad for them. They say they had no warning, but the end theme of the 8th movie is just so fitting with what happened next...

The English dub is atrocious though? I only watched Adventure and 02 in English but those don't stand a candle to the originals. Sure the 12 first seconds of the first English opening are cool but when they actually start singing and you listen to the lyrics it is just trash.
As for insert songs and such I didn't like Brave Heart that much but at least it didn't make me want to rip off my ears unlike Hey Digimon! which is pure cringe.

Only thing I can agree the English dub does ok is Our War Game! and 90% of the soundtrack there is licensed music.
