It's dying in the same way that Nintendo in general is dying. It's nowhere near as popular as it used to be but it will still be able to comfortably go on for a number of years. Also a core Pokemon game has been confirmed for the Switch, so traditional games will still be made. The only difference is that now they won't look as bad.

Series had a huge fucking resurgence thanks mostly to Normiemon Go which surely you had to have heard of. After its death Sun/Moon still managed to be pretty successful.
Since then its been a waiting game.
Brand is still very powerful thanks to 2016 but between the new"Ultra" games being a bit lazy looking and little to no information being available on the Switch version thinks are a bit of a mystery right now.

Why? Its a strong brand and doing fine unless you dislike the look of USM like I do or one of those trendy folk who think going more than a month without something new makes it officially old school. Gold and Silver will be on the Eshop soon if you need your nostalgia hole penetrated. Have fun friend.
