Are there any legitimate reasons for choosing the grass starter

the only reason anyone would ever choose chikorita is if they somehow like the design over the other 2 (e.g if you're a kid that has no idea what the starters turn into, it's not that odd to like chikorita the most)

I picked Chikorita as a kid because I had picked Bulbasaur in Red and wanted another grass starter.

I've picked grass every game since, btw.

In my opinion, the best reason to pick Chikorita is that it gives your opponent the starter that loses against Geodude instead of one that will OHKO it with a move it learns before it evolves. Catch Geodude and use Chikorita as your HM slave.

Maybe you don't, but Geodude is an absolute beast Gen 2. You can catch it before the first gym (at two separate locations, so good for Nuzlockes) and it will beat five of the first six gyms singlehandedly, run through most of Team Rocket and beat the rival's entire team if you picked Chikorita.

Chikorita is there to be the Hard Mode of Gen2 much like how Charmander was for Gen1.

Chikorita suffers from terrible movepool though. So other than liking the design more than the other 2 starters, people would go for Chikorita for challenge. Though talking about difficulties in pokemon is just silly because you will build a team to cover your weaknesses anyway.

Yes, but the trick here is that if you choose Chikorita, your rival gets a starter which is not only walled by Geodude, but also weak to both Rock and Ground. If you choose Cyndaquil or Totodile, he gets a starter which can OHKO Geodude with Water Gun or Razor Leaf.

I chose Chikorita because I chosen Squirtle in Blue so I didn't wanted to start off with another waster starter, and I didn't like Cyndaquil at the time.

Grass types in general within GSC really do suck to be honest. Granted the movepools in Gen2 were shit anyway so that explains a lot.

Cyndaquil was my first choice, but my brother chose it first and I didn't want to choose the same as him. And I didn't like totodile, so I chose chikorita without regrets
