I don't think that's really a valid argument. The champion tournament takes place during postgame and has no story. Sure you could do it but BW showed that things that occur during the postgame aren't necessarily canon unless story is involved or you are required to do it. An example being Hilbert/Hilda being able to catch Kyurem during BW even though the sequel shows that clearly didn't happen. Even ignoring that fact Ethan/Kris/lyra/Elio/Selene have all beaten Red too with the first three canonically having to do so in order to beat the game. Being undefeated is hardly an accomplishment since all of the protags are like that when controlled by the player so it's better to compare them using lore and things they accomplished in the story. Going by that I would agree with op about Hilbert/Hilda being the strongest for being the chosen one and having a legendary wake up just for them.

It's hard to pinpoint since all of them are you. I guess if you go by in game feats with no events involved, the gen 4 and 5 protags would probably be the strongest, but it's still all just you in the end.

None are. They're all player inserts so they're all equally skilled. Red only loses to another protaginists because he's the only one allowed to return as an NPC. You know that if the PWT were to return with multiple protaginists to fight, they'd all have the same odds of beating one another.

Well, to be quite honest i havent played anything beyond Gen 4 but for me its all down to math. Gold earned not 8 but 16 badges, and took down not one but two former champions and the current one, Lance. If we also count the events of Crystal, he was able to summon Suicune and Celebi to capture them and i also believe getting to the top of Mt Silver was an achievement on its own, considering how no other trainer besides Red is seen anywhere on it or even near it. Am i biased? I try not to be but for me Gold seems like a very strong trainer considering these facts.

It would've been cool to see Hilda/Hilbert return as a mentorlike character, since unlike Red the unused dialogue makes them speak.

Kris is the canon protag of Crystal silly. Getting 16 badges isn't that big of a feat since the other protags could've traveled more regions too. Blue was confirmed to visit Kalos in XY by an NPC and I'm sure Red traveled a bit as well before becoming the boss of the battle tree.

i think 16 badges as a feat mostly because it happens in the story rather than it being speculation like said characters. Now granted other characters appear in post game content but again its post game so i dont know.
