No way they'd have us go back to Kanto. Or at least, it'd be inconsistent with what we know. Lillie decided to make the tripe to Kanto after you saved her mother from Nihilego, to meet Bill. USUM is supposed to be an alternate take, not a sequel, so I don't see how a trip to Kanto would make sense unless the games end up being an expansion pack of Sun/Moon, which doesn't seem likely given it'd fully outclass Sun/Moon as games and GF is all about reserving uniqueness in older games (e.g. lack of returning features).

That isn't how it works at all. The size of the region has absolutely nothing to do with performance, it doesn't keep everything loaded at once. Things like poor framerate are solely the result of what is currently rendered on the screen. The only limitation in this situation is the space on the cartridge.
