Japs for some reason try to make the world seem like a good n' cheers place and everyone and their mother will play with you when you ask them, yet still they're borderline racist. It's interesting really how one country can lack that many realists. For fun with Pokemon battles there's really not much you can do. It's Gamefreak. They are too afraid to lose the cashgrab streak they're on so they don't wanna try anything new but still advertise it as such, hiding old features behind very thin courtains that make them seem new.

And if you think your a better player then they are then don't be a insufferable fuckbucket and just play the way they want to or use a team that's not all perfect Iv and even trained. Then when you can teach em shit, build this thing up called a friendship. Or if you want to fight savvy trainers right away there's probably tons of local video game or pokemon groups on Facebook if you look.

There's ton of player engagement. Look at Smogon, look at VGC, look all those small independent groups with their own rulesets.

The game is broken, no doubt, but people still manage.

Ignoring experienced /vp/ players, how do normal casual fans play with each other? Game Freak gives out level 100 legendaries with good IVs these days, any one of them will stomp every bro you had in-game.

Smogon uses their own fangame, VGC is a circlejerk, other communities are even tighter circlejerks.

Game Freak's vision for Pokemon is a social game where you can connect with strangers and just play and enjoy the game. They are utterly failing at that. Maybe you are lucky enough to have a group of friends who already plays and enjoys Pokemon and are experienced enough to work around the flaws and arbitrary aspects of the game, but that's becoming very rare.

Just play Pokken.
