If Fairy type existed back then they could be Fairy types with different secondary types

Uxie: Fairy/Psychic (it's the being of knowledge, so the Psychic type still fits)

Mesprit: Fairy/Fire (being of emotion)

Azelf: Fairy/Fighting (being of willpower)

They are supposed to represent the three sacred treasures of Japan that only the emperor can see (Mesprit is a gem, Azelf is a sword, and Mesprit is a mirror). Not sure what was the thought process that lead to their final designs but I'm willing to believe there is more to them than it may look like.

The pokedex says they shared their traits with humans. Maybe they represent humanity, and their duty to calm Palkia or Dialga down is meant to paralel humans taming Pokemon, since Palkia and Dialga are very beast-like and could represent Pokemon at their most primal.

Uxie represents wisdom, the mirror Yata no Kagami represents wisdom; Azelf represents will, the sword Kusanagi represents valor; Mesprit represents emotions, the gem Yasakani no Magatama represents benevolence. It's quite a lot of overlap in a region that takes a lot from Japanese mythology

I would like these things more if they weren't all boring pure Psychic types, and if they actually had more differences between each one. It literally took me years to figure out which one was Uxie and which was Mesprit. Azelf I got immediately, for some reason.

This might come off as a bit of stretch, but it can be seen in the designs as well. Azelf's head is triangular and pointy, Uxie has this round turban thing and Mesprit's dreadlocks make her head shaped like that gem.

And before you retards start memeing, yes, her. PMD Time/Darkness/Sky explicitly refers to Uxie and Azelf as males and Mesprit as female. May be a non-canon spinoff but it's good enough.
