This is probably why DP is still my favorite series. Even though it was full of filler and had shitty animation, the writing was still decent and there were so many references to Ash's previous adventures that it really felt like a good place to end his journey (or at least take it to the next level, with the Champion League stuff).

XY was good and looked pretty, but the fact that it was so isolated from everything before, without that "it all comes together" feeling, didn't get too hyped for the possibility of Ash finally winning a league.

Yes, it did a great job within itself, but failing to extend that to anything from the previous 800 episodes really decreased my excitement. It was almost like nothing before arriving in Kalos mattered at all.

I'm not talking about forsaking the Kalos mons in favor of more Charizard pandering, or having episodes where all the previous companions randomly appear, but they could have at least shown Delia watching the league from home, mentioned Ash's previous league tournament, how far he's come since he started his journey, or anything, really.

XY with a bit more callbacks to the past would've been absolute kino. But then again, it'd have also made Ash's loss even more painful.

This was an overlooking from staff. They didn't know they were running out of time until actually running totally out of time to make cameos during XY&Z because Sun & Moon games were being developed. Here's how I think it's going to go.

Gladion vs Ash. Not the final battle. But gladion is the semi final rival.

It's going to start with umbreon destroying one of ash's mon's. And ash calls out incineroar, I feel they should be rivals, they both have tragic background and are dark types. Incineroar wins at the end. Gets tooken out by a Lycanroc night.
Gladion will save Lycanroc for later. Takes out another mon. Alolan slash slashs through that Mon. Gets tooken out by another one of gladions mons.

Pikachu hops in gets wrecked. Ash calles out dusk. Dusk takes out two mons. And it's a Lycanroc vs Lycanroc battle. Dusk will win at the end because he hasn't beaten gladions Lycanroc yet.

Then sillvaly comes out holding fire memorie. And since dusk is tired from knocking half of gladions team, he himself got tooken out. Then it's up to Decidueye. After a few wakeing up Decidueye from his sleep, then he gets into gear. It was a tough match but Decidueye pulled through. Making ash continue to the next round where he's going to gets decked buy Lillie and shirone or I could be wrong and he gets Z- hydro canoned out of exsistance.

I was around there too. The only criticisms were the amount of filler (especially before Sunyshore), the lack of Brock/Dawn interaction, TR that got annoying and repetitive at some point, and Tobias.
