Battle Commands, you can command your pokemon to take an in-battle action, other than attacking without wasting your attacking turn.

I don't think Pokemon needs a major change in formula, other RPG series like Dragon Quest and SMT have remained popular a long time with less variation to their core mechanics than what Pokemon got going from gen1 to gen2, Pokemon simply needs a single player that takes advantage from the actual depth Pokemon's combat already has.

Gen3 actually used theirs though and it remains just as in use. Heck, it's the official tournament format. It even made it into the card game for a while.

Triple/rotation/inverse/sky are joke gimmicks. Doubles is the real deal.

Which is why it needs a major overhaul.
Those games do well without changes because growth is fun, tactical, and largely modular.

In pokemon it's grind for levels, grind for the perfectest egg, grind money for tms, grind for evs. The journey to success is not one of enjoyable gameplay or many meaningful choices.

Not even memeing, even Digimon does this better, it just has astronomically large issues with lore and mechanical consistency.

The only party-training game I know that does it worse is Yokai Watch, where there are acknowledged "objectively betters" and no customization other than team composition, which is why they have so many recolors.
