And tweak their designs a bit. Uxie's head could look more like a brain. Not sure about the other two.
Also some flavor abilities would be appreciated. Why does GF make every mono psychic legendary so fucking boring to use in battle?

I'm sure if Masuda read all that, he would just laugh. There's definitely some thought put behind Pokemon designs (especially legendaries), but GF is much more concerned about coming up with aesthetic, marketable designs than anything else. They don't waste time on that kind of research, they'd rather send Masuda and Ohmori to France and take pretty pictures instead.

I like their designs and their general concept, but they need more to differentiate them from each other and psychic types. They could really use unique secondary types, abilities, and/or signature moves.

I like the lake trio better because the differences in their designs (the eyes, the helmets and the poses) are significant enough to imply different personalities and what they represent. The genies meanwhile look like the same creature under different paintjobs, and worst of all their poses are the exact same; I have no way of even assuming that Thundurus and Tornadus are the destructive ones while Landorus is the one that keeps them in check.
Also the lake trio may have the same type and abilities but they also have different stat distributions and moves.

They do have a reason to exist, though. They represent "spirit," complementing the main trio, who represent the universe.

Also I like the lore about the different ways they can mess you up if you're not careful, especially "turns you into a vegetable within 5 days" Azelf.

I know they were locked behind some separate minigame thing, but the Therian formes more than fix the palette designs of the originals.

We didn't need Pokemon that represented spirit especially since it doesn't fucking work when Dialga and Palkia do stuff together. You could've easily dumped them and their lore and said that humans themselves complement the creation trio, especially since Dialga/Palkia/Giratina are not even violent or destructive on their own volition. Just seems natural to me to have Pokemon that represent metaphysical concepts alongside material concepts, especially since the mythology of Sinnoh is all about explaining the origins of the universe, which would include stuff like emotion and volition. Replacing them with humanity as a whole wouldn't make sense.

Laziness out of obligation to a pattern? Maybe that's why gen 6 chose to just re-purpose the legendary birds rather than waste resources on something barely anybody cares about. For gen 7, the Tapu are pretty central to Alola's lore, so they had to put in the extra effort.

Why not? Humans are emotional creatures and the series puts a lot of emphasis on friendship. I think it'd be much better to have that complement Pokemon that represent components of the universe that are far above humans. Humans are small and minor in the grand scheme of things but they still strive on and build bonds regardless or some shit. You could even spin it as "the emotions and friendship of humans convinced Dialga/Palkia/Giratina to mind their own business" or something.

But to defend their role in the plot: I don't think the Lake Trio were created TO keep Dialga/Palkia under control, they just possessed that power (which makes thematic sense to me in some vague "spirit triumphs over matter" way), a power which Cyrus then exploits. I don't see a problem with that: it's more interesting than RSE's "McGuffin(s) of controlling Groudon/Kyogre," and I thought seeing Galactic get up to creepy sciencey shit to harvest the crystals was neat.
