I feel like Ninty/The Pokemon Company will go after it when the Switch game comes out. Can't have people play against others for free anymore.

Most people don't buy Pokemon for competitive experience, so it doesn't hurt their sales

It also does a good job of keeping the western competitive community alive

Yep. Most had at least a donations page, so it's easy to argue they were making some money off of it. That doesn't fly in court.
