Sonic is actually doing quite alright.
The only major blunders in the last 10 years were only Sonic Lost World and Sonic Boom for Wii U. Colours and Generations had good reception and spin-offs were quite alright. The new tv-show is successful.
Honestly, the "Sonic is dead" meme never made any sense.

The best part about this meme is how every time I ask people what was wrong with the game, all I get is canned answers from people who have obviously never played it.

The only problem with Lost World is that it released first on a dead console and by the time it came to PC, people were already intoxicated by the dumb haters.

SEGA really needs to stop making exclusives for an audience that is known to hate Sonic. Fucking Colors sold less than Unleashed.

Never. Mania was created by the cumulative autism of dedicated Sonic ROMhackers. Nintendo and TPCi hate ROMhacks and fangames with a fucking passion, and regarding Pokémon specifically they C&D'd Prism, a game that was in development for NINE YEARS, four days before release just to be a dick. TPCi would never hire fans to make their own Pokémon games unless there was a gargantuan shift in philosophy among the staff (kind of like how SEGA used to be similarly dickish to fangames and C&D'd the Streets of Rage fan remake years before any of Taxman's ports).
