It's possibly the best 2D platformer I have ever played, the level design is something to be studied in detail and the variety is mind blowing.

Also critics are retarded and can't deal with enhanced re-releases no matter how good they are. Emerald got a lower score than RS, so did Platinum and DP, and I believe even BW2 got lower scores than BW1. And look at Explores of the Sky, unanimously regarded as the best in the series.
SM got ridiculously high scores despite being an unfinished shallow game with nearly becomes a visual novel and starts teleporting you up mountains to move the plot along, even if USM fixes all of this and delivers a great game somehow it'll still score in the low 70s.

Eh, I wasn't a fan of the presentation, and with how that was the main draw of the Rare DKC games I'm not surprised critics were disappointed with TF despite being the best as a game unless you follow the DKC1 instruction manual to heart.

This. I wanted to love DKCR and TF, and I did like them, but they didn't feel like DKC games, even though the platforming was amazing as >>33386800 said.

The musical score and general atmosphere made DKC and DKC2, and that just wasn't there in DKCR and TF.
