I get some mixed up. I sometimes think Gen 2 pokemon are Gen 3 because I first encountered them in Gen 3. Sometimes I just remember wrong for no real reason (such as Heracross being a Gen 1 mon, or Paras being Gen 2.)

People accept this as a common mistake, but were the people who thought this living under a rock during all of gen 2? Pokemania was still pretty big, even if you had Gold version and were shit at the game so you never made it to Kanto, there was still merchandise and guidebooks everywhere. Who didn't want to learn about every new Pokemon when GSC was released?

In ruby/sapphire/emerald you fight trainers pretty early on who have azurill on their teams. Also you get a wynaut egg handed to you in the hot springs.

No, but that's because i've been hollow ng this since it cane to the west, so I cared when each gen was new and special which makes it easier to know this. I didnt know about, say, scraggy when I entered high school for instance.

I never quite got the skarmory and magcargo in gen 3 thing though, even if they werent that common in gsc (they did show up though), they were in merch and other shit during the gen 2 era.

I'd assume is a bit harder if you got into the series later.
