God, I miss the Link Cable. Wireless and internet trading and battling is way more convenient, but there's just something so satisfying about having a solid length of wire connecting your Gameboy with your friends' when battling or trading.

>tfw you have the exact same birthday as Mewtwo
I can remember getting Red and Blue when it first came out, somehow managed to complete the game, stole my brothers Gengar and abused the missingno glitch, those were good days
Pokemania was great, getting a pack of cards every day before school, watching my brother get in deep shit for trading 200+ cards for a charizard and having to swap them back, getting the first movie on VHS just for the cards
Shit was fucking amazing
>>
>>33377569
>You weren't a dickwad hating everything slightly similar to Pokemon
Oh god the fucking wars, you were either Pokemon or Yu-Gi-Oh, no in between, if you said Digimon you were shunned by everyone
>>
>>33378966
YuGiOh didn't hit the mainstream until a few years after Pokemania died down IIRC.
>>
>>33377109
It's a similar thing, but just imagine the feeling of excitement when you were a child vs. adulthood. It's just a different level of intensity.

Plus it was everywhere. Cards, games, TV show, merchandise. There were Pokemon jelly jars, Pokemon fruit snacks, Pokemon eraser tops.

One of my favorite memories was a roller skating field trip where they played the theme song and every single child screamed and got in the rink and sang every word while skating.
>>
>>33378977
Id say Yu-Gi-Oh kicked off around maybe 2003-04? All I remember is everyone jumped onto it bar like 5-6 people in my school

I was old enough for Pokemania but not rich enough. All I got was to see the anime and a handful of cards. It was fine since everyone else was poor in my school so only a handful of kids had a gameboy. We all jumped ship to Yugioh because it seemed so more mature than Pokemon.

I didn't rediscover pokemon until after 2007. The first pokemon game I actually played was a ROM of FRLG.

I was around for Pokemania but I pretty much missed the hype.

Man, I lived in Mexico as a kid then visited the US during the middle of it all. It was insane, from the merchandise infesting every store to convincing my parents to take me to watch Pokémon 2000 even if I didn't understand shit. I also got my first Pokémon game, Blue, that trip. I came back with the knowledge that Digimon would be released soon in Mexico and we started hating it preemptively hahaha.

It was a magical moment of my life and I'm sure no Pokémon Go fag will be able to match.
>>
You know, I livedd some pretty bad things in my childhood and I notice only now how pokemon and video games in general are some of my best memories. I remember watching the first three pokemon movies for the first time during hospital stays and how it made me feel less like shit going there all the time.

>>33379347
Holy shit I forgot pogs were even a thing. I used to have so many of them too
>>
>>33379824
I know that feel. I was one of the last hold outs at my school when I was around 11 or 12, and when kids started making fun of my for wearing my Pokémon shirt I stopped playing, in between Crystal and Ruby/Sapphire. I never played RSE or DPPt as a result. Started playing again around 2007 or 2008 with FRLG because a couple of my friends picked it back up, then we play HGSS when t came out and I've been back in ever since.
>>
>>33377262
Nonsense. The Wireless Adapter and then the DS and on was one of the best things to happen to the series.

Link cables were annoying. Especially in the beginning of Gen 3 when you needed 3 of them to connect the 4 possible players in what was ultimately a mess.

I have 4 of them one GB and 3 GBA (and 2 Wireless Adapters from buying FR/LG) and they all still work perfectly fine.

Annoying to have to be within a set distance for the cables when I play my old save battery replaced physical copies but they work fine.

You should try not buying cheap knock-offs over officially licensed ones.

Chile spic here. Almost nobody was aware that Pokemon was indeed a game and everybody thought it was just the anime.

I loved to watch that anime. I remember 9 old me hallucinating when that Charmeleon evolved.

It's impressive how easy was to astonish a kid, before children had access to internet and smartphones.
>>
When Pokemania was around, I didn't realize how obsessed other kids were with it at the time, and wasn't as personally obsessed with it as I would be later. I just thought it was something people, including adults, casually enjoyed like anything else.
>>
>>33380396
I quit competitive in 2005 and sorta quit the franchise itself in 2006. Had never even realized D/P was a thing until 2008 where I was sneaking peaks at this guy's DS who was sitting in front of me and was confused as hell because he was just going around catching legendaries with a single ball like it was nothing. Was too much of an autist to ask him what was going on and still never understood what was going on until reaching Pal Park.

I Did meet some people that played during the gen 2 era and some in the gen 3 era but it was all short lived because they ended up moving away a year later. In the cause of the four gen 3 people, I ended up getting them all into competitive battling and tutored them a bit since I used to hang out around the old school Smogonfags on their Netbattle server before they created the site.

what mania?
I lived through that time period and it was just school kids being into it but it didn't matter because they were stupid assholes (some even claimed to hate pokemon and didn't get hyped at all) and are even worse now as adults.

the rest was just advertising for the games in the Nintendo Magazine with some additional comic and while that was interesting and good, it's nothing compared to what happens now content-wise.

wow, such pokemania.
probably was much bigger in the US or in Japan though. can't comment on that though.

Greekfag here and I can tell you it was real even outside of America. Important factors here were definitely the pogs and the Greek anime dub. But I can distinctly remember pokemon stickers being everywhere, and wherever you looked they sold pokemon knickknacks and chinese knockoffs. It was like Pogo but for much longer.

Did your country dub the anime?
>>
>>33382804
>Did your country dub the anime?

nope. Austrian here. Germany dubbed it, like most anime series in german.

I honestly don't even know if my peers back then watched the anime. I know I enjoyed it lots but I also had fun watching german dubbed Ranma 1/2, Yu-Gi-Oh and Dragon Ball, next to the Pokemon OS.

I remember I did have Pokemon stickers as well once Gen 2 happened. not doubting you in any case. Might have been a bigger mania than I thought here in Europe.

Literally same. Got into the games when I was like 8-9 (Started with Emerald). Then played gen 1-3

Gen 4 released without me knowing, so when I played it, everything was new and unknown to me. Gen 5 was my first experience with a leak season, being excited by Tepig and dissapointed by the redt of the line

God, I want to go back
>>
Born in '94, so I have kinda foggy memories of Pokemania, but I do remember it, and it was glorious.

I've been thinking a lot about it recently actually. I used to roll my eyes at "nostalgiafags", but Fuck if I haven't been rewatching the OS and feeling overwhelmingly happy about it.

I remember trading pokemon cards on the school playground, even into the GS expansions. The iconic 4Kids logo and when WotC handled the TCG. Reading bad pokemon fanfics online and browsing pokemon fan sites.

Nostalgia actually hit me so hard this morning I looked into the fate of 4kids and it looks like they went entirely under. Legitimately depressing.
