When you think about it, about half the Pokemon protagonists are relatively safe and "generic" to be familiar, since they're the player's avatar.

Red is an average kid with a baseball cap, jeans and short sleeve jacket. Leaf is essentially a Lass with a hat. Black hair in Gen I, brown in III.
Ethan's a kid with a backwards cap, a hoodie, and shorts. Black hair.
Brendan wears a track jacket and sweatpants, along with a beanie. Black hair in RSE, brown in remakes.
Lucas and Dawn wear winter coats. Dawn has a beanie, Lucas has a hunting cap. Black hair.
Hilbert wears a baseball cap, jacket and black jeans. Hilda wears a baseball cap, vest and ripped jeans. Brown hair.
Calem wears a track jacket, jeans and boots. Red cap with sunglasses. Serena's outfit is like Leaf's, only with the skirt up higher and sunglasses. Black and brownish blonde hair.
You has a baseball cap, striped shirt and capris. Mizuki has a flower hat, oversized floral shirt and short shorts. Black hair.

The most outlandish you'll get is Kris (blue hair, skull cap, unnatural twintails), Lyra (casquette hat with ribbon, overall shorts with a long sleeved hooded top, single-striped socks) RS May (collared top, bandana, compression shorts), Nate (bedhead, white pupils, swimwear underneath the outfit, visor), Rosa (Sailor Moon hair, white pupils, visor) and any customized version of Serena/Calem/You/Mizuki.

I adore both protagonists designs, especially females. However, they are drawn in a way that it looks extremely childish, thus bad.

Lucas from Diamond/Pearl look the shittiest desu, although in Platinum he isn't so bad

Moon is so bloated after eating so many malasadas. She rubs here plump belly happily, so full and content.

Ken Sugimori should step down and stop drawing shit for Pokemon. GameFreak should hire a better artist already.

Look at his mediocre designs since Gen6. Heck all the starters of Gen6 and Gen7 look super lame, and of course let's not forget Emboar and Oshawot line.

Ken is only good at traditional art, that's why his early Gen1 artworks still look the best. but even since he took on digital art the design went downhil, especially at Gen6.

Even the digital FRLG artworks of Gen1 pokemon look way inferior to the early traditional ones.

I think it has something to do with their faces and how it's structured. The SM art is essentially a 2D replication of his 3D model, whereas the USUM one takes more liberties. His eyes are a lot bigger, and in-game You's mouth can never make that shape. His eyebrows got a lot thinner too.
