>switch and protect : the tournament
why is """"""""""competitive"""""""""" pokemon interesting again?
>>
>>33353961
It isn't, and hasn't been since Gen 4
>>
>>33353961
It's certainly more entertaining and interesting than your shitpost.
>>
Pokemon isn't competitve the same reason mario kart isn't

Too much luck involved
>>
What's with all the flag capes and personal plushies? It's the gayest shit ever.
>>
>>33354039
>flag capes
repping your country in an international tournament
>personal plushies
autism
>>
>>33353990
Better shut down all those TCG tournaments then, guess they aren't competitive.
>>
>>33353961
Doubles sucks. Sorry about that.
>>
Yes, you use protect when you want to avoid damage so your other Pokemon can attack the threat, or to stall out trick room, tailwind, terrain, weather etc. Would you rather people didn't try to win? Would it be more interesting if they just sat there and fired off predictable super effective hits?

Because this is what you do the whole match. You're using Protect, Fake Out, and switch into one of the two intimidate users you must have on your team. There are only a few viable team cores and with the "Alola only mon rule" you basically have an extremly centralised meta where there are only 15-20 viable pokemon: Garchomp, Tapus, UBs - Guzzlord, Porygon2 and Arcanine which is so overused at the point where probably only gen 2 snorlax dethrones it's usage.

Even those Battle Revolution casual battles are more entertaining: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N_knmNJIoNk&feature=youtu.be

>watching two grown men cautiously predict eachothers moves using switch out stall techniques is in any way entertaining
I'd rather watch two 9 year olds earthquake the shit out of eachother with 6 dragon type pokemon

You could just as well reduce singles to switching hazard setters and removers in and out so you can freely switch until you get the opportunity to set up a sweep or 100-turn stallout. There might be a somewhat greater variety of Pokemon involved, but that's a lot to do with dedicated stallmons being viable in the first place and the rock-paper-scissors of playstyles in creates together with HO and balanced, which in turn is a roulette. That's before the extra element of randomness you get when several mons fulfill very similar roles on the same type of team, with the difference in typing too often causing an instawin or instalose.

If you don't mind the aesthetics of a smaller pool of Pokemon (although top teams in major tournaments tend to feature niche techs anyway) and the fact that major mechanics in doubles come in the form of moves and abilities - making the best ones naturally common and less diverse - what remains is a format which is demands constant evaluation of the playing board and maintaining a delicate balance between conserving your options and applying offensive pressure. It does demand a lot more attention turn by turn and really isn't for everyone, but it's just deeper.
>>
why isn't there a single battle format as well?
>>
>>33357225
Game Freak hates Singles and they try to shove Doubles down everyone's throats.

Ignore this idiot, have you ever watched a VGC tournament in real time? Those take hours as is, and the switchfests and stallfests you get in singles would make only masochists want to participate and tank views hard, never mind having to commentate that (unless they do strictly bo1 lol). The only advantage it has is that it's simpler and more familiar to the general audience as well as being more diverse in Pokemon variety somewhat (which would still be too uniform, see any post or yt comment bitching about Smogon only approving of 50 different Pokemon). I also suspect that GF and/or TPC are prioritising Japan, where doubles and VGC are relatively far more popular than elsewhere.
>>
Isn't it weird how the official competitive format for Pokemon is a game mode that has been pretty much been treated as a bonus format you only deal with on occasion in the mainline GF games, ever since it was introduced?
