I can't speak for here, but on forums like bulbagarden/serebii most didn't ship Iris with anyone. Tumblr ships her with Cilan for some bizarre reason.

When BW first started people were optimistic about Iris at first due to being something new, but then they started not liking her because of her personality quirks and then her dragon related goal with being mishandled or giving her overpowered pokemon. By the end of BW, Iris simply didn't get much development...and then she was just overshadowed by Serena.

Overall Iris was a decent idea for a character it's just the execution of her and the BW anime itself that made her so unpopular. If she was introduced in any other arc she probably would have been better.

I'm not a shipper myself. It seems like 25% of threads on vp are Serena, Lillie, and Mallow threads, with an argument in each thread about who is the best. Was vp already like this?
I still occasionally even see May and Dawn being brought up, but I can't say I've ever seen Iris/Ash fanart. I know Iris is generally disliked on vp, but was it any different when she was the traveling companion?

As I said, in the very beginning of BW people were optimistic about her but the dislike of her pretty much started by the end of the first year of BW.

She obviously never became as overly popular as May or Dawn did before her, and then once the Serena/Amour frenzy started she was pretty much forgotten.

Gen 5 in general is the black sheep of the franchise. Anime fandom despised Best Wishes, the games outside BW2 are divisive as hell, and don't get me started on the Pokemon. I imagine /vp/ or atleast during /v/ days hated gen 5 with a passion and it wasn't until after gen 6 was well underway that some started appreciating the games and pokemon. Best Wishes, though is still heavily derided.

In Japan, Cilan was also much more popular than Iris due to a famous Japanese VA playing him, and his type of flamboyant character is popular with the Japanese audience.

They even made a Cilan figure in Japan during BW's run but not an iris one. Not to mention Cilan got to come back for a special to meet Bonnie/Clemont while Iris got no XY appearance.

On /vp/, BW1 was divisive with people either adoring or despising it for the most part, most liked BW2 on some level.

People also liked Best Wishes up until about when the 2011 earthquake happened and they had to retool. But the board got overrun by furfag shitposting hard in 2011 anyways so you pretty much had no chance to talk about anything until early 2012 when janitor presence was ramped up, just in time for BW2 hype which was probably the best time for the board if you weren't a fan of the wild west that was 2010 /vp/.

BW itself was viewed as a step down from DP at the time and the writers made some very questionable writing decisions that saga that made it one of the most dislikes eras of the anime.

Making Ash into a complete moron again was a big one, but BW was a mess in general.

About the same as today, except trade out the sinnoh remakeposting with hoenn remakeposting and the starter shitposting with... no start shitposting. There were distribution threads more often back then for gen 4 and 5 carts, lots of shitty OCs being generated, and your general genwars thread.

There were also RP threads, spoilered porn dumps, and general writefag/greentext threads before they all got consolidated into a fanfiction general. The tone of the board sure wasn't as depressing as it is now though, people weren't constantly talking about how everything sucks now

The anime threads really didn't start till XY. BW wasn't popular enough to discuss ep by episode, and those that did were still posting on forums like bulbagarden and serebii att he time.

The BW trio looked cool in the movies at least. Iris looked a lot cuter since the movies had better shading than BW's animation.

I remember the live thread when the DP league was airing. The reactions to Tobias sending out Latios were incredible. Nothing like the Alain shitposting but it was still quite the event.
