Only way I was ever able to think about the type was that it's an energy or genetic build that couldn't be given a simple description and it was most commonly seen or associated with dragons, and that Tyrantrum was an early ancestor of the type so when it was studied in the modern day it was labelled Dragon type.

But that's really pushing it obviously.
